In need of complete overhaul!I did not stay in the main hotel but in the lodge at the back of the hotel. The smell of damp was over powering. The room extremely tired. The furniture shown on the internet must have been repossessed as that is not the furniture in the room that I stayed in or in the bar, which is dreadfully over-priced. Had I being booked in for a second night I would have changed hotels as the room was so damp. Reception staff are completely disengaged. I would not stay at this hotel again.

Never again!

We were really looking forward to a short weekend break and had booked the hotel via the internet. The pictures looked ok but when we actually arrived we were more than disappointed. The room was tiny, the bathroom even more so (and cold!), there was no bathtub and the sink was in the bedroom. The room was dark and semlled musty, the curtains were yellowing and the furniture and decoration shabby and uninviting. The staff at reception were disinterested and unfriendly, bordering on rude and unwelcoming. The pool is tiny and did not look very clean; the Sauna has to be booked half an hour before you want to use it and costs an extra £5. The outside of the hotel is a disgrace, the place seems to fall apart and nobody is doing anything about it. Breakfast was ok, but nothing to write home about and the breakfast room itself is dark and uncomfortable. We like York very much and will come again but certainly not to the Newington!

Fantastic stay

We went for our first anniversary and it was fantastic, we had our room up graded and pink champage on arrival. the room was great with a four poster bed and a jacuzzi. Everything we used was replaced each morning with fresh things even if it wasn't all used like the soap. We used the pool a number of times and enjoyed it very much whilst it might not seem that big it is perfect for a nice well earned soak after a hard day stomping around york. the staff were fantastic and so friendly the morning staff that served breakfast were a credit to the hotel. The room attendants were lovely, carefully replacing rose petals(that had fell on the floor) back on to the bed for our return. The night porters never got fed up of us in and out,in and out for the keys as we came and went. The reception staff were very caring checking on our stay making sure everything was as best as it could be. We had a brilliant time and will definitely be booking again. Looking forward to it very much, thank you to all the staff - you are doing a wonderfull job.

Scruffy Hotel not worth the money shower in room did not work properly we were not compensated for this and nothing was done about it. Receptionist had bad customer service skills. Would have expected a lot more for the money.
