Unhospitable, rude and misleading

My elderly parents and I stayed at the Bootham Park hotel in York from 21 - 24 September 2007. A twin and a single room were reserved. When we arrived we had a double and a single! The double room had a broken window latch which the landlady knew about. We had to make temporary repairs to the latch to enable the window to be closed. We asked the cleaner who let us into the room about the twin room and was told that there was no such room in the hotel. I went to see the landlady who said that there was such a room which had been booked for a while. We asked specifically for a twin room when booking because my mother had recently had a major operation and had been receiving cancer treatment and need a bed of her own to enable her to rest. Unfortunately there was nothing we could do about it! The following day late in the afternoon I requested that the heating be put on for a short while because the rooms were a little chilly. The landlady was extremely rude and put the phone down. She later offered us two heaters explaining that the heating would not come on because it was too warm. 5 minutes later the heating came on! The landlady had a very bombastic, rude attitude towards me and was not happy about being asked for some heating. The following morning she snubbed us at breakfast, whilst being pleasant to the other guests. This spoilt the weekend for us. Surely it is the job of the landlady to make her paying guests comfortable.

Top Local Tips for York

Take A City Bus Tour One of the things that made our visit tedious was that the attractions were spread all over the city, and with parking scarce and heavy traffic, we parked at the city's edge and walked all day. I noticed that there were red double decker busses giving people city tours. If I had it to do over again, I would have taken an organized tour, where I could see the city through the eyes of a tour guide who knew how to explain it all. This would have saved my aching feet, and I would have understood and enjoyed visit to York more than I did. However, I was with travelling companions and didn't want to make them feel like they had to pay for a tour. I wish I had offered to pay for our whole party to take the tour - the busses seemed interesting and the double decker feature gave them a romantic atmosphere all their own. If I had done this, my experience might have been far different than it was. You can always do the independant walking after the tour is over.

Things to do in York Other than the excellent Viking Walk, walk around the city walls. Don't walk the whole way as its over 3 miles. Walk between Monk Bar and Bootham Bar behind the fabulous Minster
