Based on past experience, the bedroom was of average size. The en-suite bathroom was rather small; it had a shower rather than a bath, but was well supplied with toiletries. Both the room and the bathroom were very clean. This was my first experience of a hotel that has taken the trouble to install digital multi-channel TV in the bedrooms. Both the breakfasts and evening meals were first class; the restaurant was spacious and an interesting room in itself. There was plenty of parking space. All the staff were friendly and helpful throughout my stay. The hotel tariff was very reasonable; you could easily pay twice the amount for this standard at some establishments. Singles will be glad to know that there is no heavy 'single room supplement'; I paid only £3/night more than I would have done as half of a couple. It seems the hotel started out in life as a coaching inn on one of the routes between Newcastle and Edinburgh. However, the interior decoration throughout was easily the best I had ever seen for a building of this period. Although the hotel fronts onto the A697, there was no noticeable traffic noise (I imagine most of the traffic uses the A1). The hotel is on the edge of Wooler, but it is only about half a mile into the town centre.
