Historical Traveller Reviews of The Harte & Garter Hotel

Great hotel, pity about the soundproofing

from selfcatering
How I would love to tell you to all come here and enjoy this lovely hotel! After all, its just reopened after a £75m refurb, the rooms are gorgeous, the views of Windsor Castle unbeatable, next to all the shops, lots of restaurants and the fabulous theatre just up the road. All true, all good. BUT......if you are planning a weekend break, just remember that at 3am, around 600 people leave the clubs up the road and all of them seem to stand outside the hotel, waiting for taxis, and talk very LOUDLY, using plenty of raw Anglo Saxon invective, for a number of hours. It woke even me up, and I listened and fumed from 3am till nearly 6am, when the last football chant died down. Why, if you spend £75m on a refurbishment, cant you spend money on at least double glazing the front windows? There is absolutely no sound proofing in the executive suites. When we checked out, the professional and exemplary reception staff were handling a lot of tired and grumpy customers, with similar complaints. When I asked if the noise was a regular occurrence, they conceded it was, on a Friday and Saturday. Bring your ear plugs, because otherwise, this is a lovely place.

Omplaints Are Ignored !!!! But They Love To Take Your Money !!!

My wife and i recently stayed at the newly opened Harte & garter. Firstly we were placed in a room that smelled of paint and had dirty windows with masses of pidgeon droppings.
After a great deal of complaining we were eventually moved to room 212.
The hotel boasts free wireless connection, but our room didnt have it and we were charged £10 for an internet cable!!!! which we didnt find out about until the end of our stay.
We arranged for breakfast in our room and it arrived....well part of it did....45 minutes late with no apology !!!
also room 212 has a balcony on the 2nd floor, we counld'nt access the balcony at first because it was being used to house old flood lights and their cable from the refurbishment of the hotel. We complained to reception ....when finally someone answered !!! and we were assured that the flood lights would be removed, we stayed for 2 nights and no-one moved them, i moved them myself....... what a health & safety issue !!!
The bathroom was a deathtrap, as you could'nt open the shower door and there were no hand rails to help you in or out of the bath to have a shower....another safety issue.
When we checked out there were so many people complaining that it was impossible to lodge a complaint of our own..... we were told at reception that it was due to a lack of staff.
So we decided to contact folio hotels themselves (they own the hotel) and complain direct......because what was the point of complaining to the manager, when we'd complained for 3 days and he had done nothing !!!
We sent the complaint letter to their head office in swindon by recorded delivery on 19th of november (tracking number, royal mail dh235286975gb..... anyone can check that the letter arrived on the 20th of november) and yet we have had no apology or reply to our complaints. We have telephoned direct and sent emails and no-one wants to know !!!! The hotel actually doesnt acknowledge our visit.....maybe i should contact my credit card issuer and tell them that and explain that obviuosly, if it wasnt me at the hotel then who the hell spent over £300 !!!! I bet they would acknowledge my stay then !!!
My advice is dont bother staying there....its overpriced and everyone is rude, especially the director who i complained he cant even acknowledge my letter !!!!!
My family and i have stayed at the hotel for the last 20 years, but never again...... shame on the hotel and shame on folio hotels !!!!

Rip Off CIty...

Room was freezing and we had to go out to find a coffee to warm up while they fixed things
Reception is hidden behind the lift - the most unfriendly place in the hotel world and not staffed as befits the marketing blurb.
Hotel has been refurbished at 7+ million pounds by a designer who obviously doesn't run or clean hotels. I hope the owners get some of their money back
TV in room 303 can only be viewed from the bed at 175 degrees - for goodness sake.
At about £200.00 per night you'd expect some thing quite stunning - not just basic / adequate.
Not even a bisuit on the Tea tray for good ness sake - I guess that room service could bring you one at £5.00 a pop.

Most dangerous was the bathroom in 303 - the seal on the shower floods the bathroom and as the floor is not a non slip surface (come on isnt that basic need these days...?) it is a slippery death trap.
The shower head is jammed agains the ceiling and if you are over 6' tall - you will not be able to stand and wash you hair at the same time. the shower head waters a very wide area - except for the piece of bath you happen to be standing in - but the walls and floor get a good soaking - this is design for good nesss sake - bad design at it best!
We did report the flooding.

Special NOTICE. There is NO Parking available - the nearest is a whopping £16.00 overnight stay - and others in town can charge even more - read the clamping and opening times VERY CAREFULLY.
No porterage, and no help provided or offered in a quiet reception on a saturday afternoon. - come on you can do better.

Decor is very modern / bland and in 18 months will be dated - lets hope they don't misspend another 7 million!
The finished to the new rooms is as good good as you would expect but old doorways, skirtings and and original fixings just painted over. non of the tables are glass covered and in a few months will look scratched and ruined - glass tops is a basic for 4 star right?
No iron or board in room - the hotel has one for all guest to share - do not go at busy times unless you want to risk walking out a crumples mess.

Breakfast is £20.00 if you step in from outside. Mine was served unappealingly and cold.

Windsor deserves so much better - customers deserve better - the entire hotel travelling public deserve much better - service standards and value for money which this - most certainly is not - and we (apparently) got a special rate!!

Good side - view was good - bed comfortable - but these two items alone not worth the gob smacking investment.
Have stayed in much better run and more comfortable guest houses. - iand i wouldnt even call my self picky!! -
well not until now when high pries demand GREAT service

You can't you cant open the window for more than 2 inches. i guess this is for health and safety - which means that the hotel can drive you insane with all the negatives but then prevent you form jumping out of the window in disgust!

If you stay here - you will have money to burn, be mad, desperate - or all three.

My husband and i had a wonderful stay here recently. The hotels recent refurbishment manages to capture the essence of traditional with contemporary. The room we had was very well appointed and was situated at the front of the hotel offering a direct view of the castle. The staff here were very professional and friendly. The food offered was fantastic and delicious (compliments to the chef!) Overall a very enjoyable stay and will be returning soon.

Great view

from SusanWillits_CA
We stayed here just a couple of days after they reopened so they were still working some kinks out. Even though we arrived after 3pm, our rooms weren't ready and the elevator didn't work. But these things can and were fixed. What you can't beat is being literally across the street from Windsor Castle. I had a lovely room with a comfortable mattress and FREE Internet. The bathrooms need some work though. There is no counter space to put out your toiletries. The bath tub/shower is hard to get in and out of. But when you're eating your breakfast and gazing at the Castle or going out on a balcony and watching the Changing of the Guard, you just can't beat it.
The staff is very nice and helpful and will get better with experience. It is a delightful place.

A sumptuous stay in a perfect location

I can't think of a reason why you would not feel thoroughly pleased with yourself for choosing to stay at the Harte & Garter. The location is completely stunning. You cannot fail to feel priviledged eating breakfast with a view over Windsor Castle. The refurbishment manages to combine both classic and modern and the rooms are delightful. But unlike some hotels of high standards, you also have genuine service and a friendly welcome that encourages you to enjoy every minute of your stay.

A Good Hotel

from ricardobathuk
We stayed at the Harte & Garter Hotel for 2 nights in October, having booked a very reasonable rate on their website 102GBP per night RO.

When we arrived I asked if there was any chance of having a room with a balcony and they upgraded us free of charge, which was good of them.

Please bear in mind that this hotel has just re-opened after spending 7.5 million GBP on a full refurbishment, and as a result there are fa few teething issues, such as our room had not been occupied before, so it was not as clean as it could have been (juts needed a good dusting!)

Apart from the lack of lighting in the room, one broken light bulb (they do not use low energy light bulbs which did surprise me given the recent re-refurbishment!) the room was OK, but not what I would call special given the view from the room! Windsor Castle is literally across the road, so a very impressive backdrop! You need to keep the curtains closed in both the bathroom and bedroom as there are no net curtains and the tour buses park directly outside all day! The bathrobes had not arrived at the hotel, so check before arriving in as you will need one, the heating works if you can work it out! There was no information pack in the room, or any room service menu, instructions on how the TV works as I needed to figure out how to get digital TV, simple if you know how, there is a small button on the remote that says DTV/AV once this goes to DTV, you get the full Freeview package which includes digital radio channels. Beware of putting things in the wardrobe unless you have a torch to find them again, as not lighting near that in the room!

Bed was comfy, but small, nearly kept falling out in the night! Also no headboard so not easy to sit up in bed!

Shower is good pressure, but the shower head is too near the wall for you to really have a good shower, as I had to lean backwards to rinse! Good toiletries from The White Company, although not that many for two people, so you may need to ask for replenishments!

One nice touch they have lap[top safes in the wardrobe, instead of the small tiny safes every other hotel seems to prefer!

Dinner in the Tower brasserie was delicious, the portions are large, so beware if you are like us and not a huge eater! The fillet steak was the nicest I have ever eaten!

Staff are very pleasant and helpful, although they are new, so still working out where everything is, but do bear with them as they will look after you!

Not sure if the Spa is open as no info was available, but I would check with them first as there website says it will be open in January 2008.

All in all a great place foe a few days especially if you want to go to Windsor Castle, they do a deal for a ticket to the castle of 13.50GBP instead of the 14.20GBP that you pay at the castle.

Windsor itself is very busy as you would expect, but there are so many shoppes, restaurants, café's you will not fail to find somewhere in your budget range!

We didn't eat breakfast at the hotel as it wasn't included in the rate, and at 14.50GBP per person for continental, we decided that as there was tea and coffee in the room, we nipped to M&S round the corner and had croissants for pence for 4 instead of the 29.0GBP that it would have cost us at the hotel! Also the café's round the hotel are all open early so you could always do that instead!

Your Money is well spent here!!!

from stayhotelzallweek
I had to write a review on this place because it really is something special!
The refurb work has transformed this tired old hotel into something that Windsor needs - a damn good hotel you can rely on.!! I stay away all week and have stayed here before the work started (it has been closed for refurb for nearly a year i think?) anyway - i was on business as usual but this place really made my usually dull week into something special - the rooms have a real quality feel to them - no flat pack furniture and dodgy bland designs here!!! Wireless internet access, comfiest beds ever slept in, great Bar & restaurant area - i am definitely going back on leisure with my partner and is a must for my stay there next month.

Can't believe the other review about average Customer Service is actually genuine ? The staff were really good - no better actually they were great. I had the misfortune of visiting the Windsor Grill (Anthony Worrall Thompsons Restnt opened 3 weeks prior) on the first night which is where i would expect to have excellent service - but it was terrible - after 3 weeks of being open you would expect to have a drink within 20 mins and get your food order right??
Harte & Garter only opened last week or so - and their service was far superior - the staff were genuinely friendly & happy to serve you - they seemed to know their stuff and much more. I had a superb afternoon tea, Dinner (Menu is fab!) and breakfast and met lots of staff who i can honestly say were very proud of their new hotel and departments and very professional too. Every new business has teething problems - i didnt notice any during my stay (3 nights) but on reflection - the location, the staff, the hotel's quality feel and atmosphere, plus the great food are all far too good to start worrying about what isnt right.!!!

I will take some photos next month when i return!

Fantastic location

from eggandham
We stayed at the hotel just after it had reopened after a refurbishment. We received a warm welcome at reception and were directed to our room on the third floor. The room was at the front of the hotel and the view of the castle was fantastic; you could not get much closer. The room itself was comfortable and had everything you needed. The bathroom had a bath and a seperate shower with lovely "White Company" products. The hotel has a fantastic location right in the centre of the town. We had drinks in the bar before we went through to the restaurant for dinner. The staff were friendly and welcoming and explained a couple of items on the menu that we were not sure about. The food was excellent and we had a very enjoyable meal.
We had a good nights sleep although being at the front of the hotel you could hear some noise from the street below.
We had breakfast in the restaurant; there was a large buffet with all the cold breakfast items which looked great. Breakfast was as good as the dinner the previous night.
We had a great nights stay at the hotel and only wished we had come for longer. We will definately return in the not too distant future.

Best hotel in Windsor

from JoanAtkins
My husband and I travel to Windsor every year to celebrate our anniversary and this year we were lucky enough to find that the Harte & Garter had finally opened again and had a totally new look.

We were welcomed at reception by a lovely member of staff who had our bags taken up to our room and recommeded a fantastic little Italian restaurant just down the road from the hotel - Don Beni - definitely worth a visit. On our second night we sampled the food in the hotel which was excellent! (The Windsor Brown Soup was especially good).

Overall we had a lovely weekend and were made to feel very welcome at the hotel and will be back again next year when we will be celebrating our 25th wedding anniverary.

Top Local Tips for Windsor

Shops, Shops and Shops! Well you are really spoilt for choice with the shopping in Windsor, turn right as you leave the hotel, then right again, and you are in the main shopping area, with all the shops you expect, then if you turn left and left again from the hotel, you come to the Windsor Royal Shopping area, which is a converted train station, as most is undercover, specialist shops and café's abound and was really nice and clean and relaxing!

dont be ripped off try to find a nice Guest house - Windsor is small and very walkable so no where is very far away.
