Historical Traveller Reviews of Oakley Court Hotel Windsor

from PerfectJourneys
Driving in through the gates of Oakley Court one feels an immediate sense of peace and quiet. The narrow winding drive through the grassy grounds to the entrance forces you to slow down and begin to anticipate a relaxing and visually beautiful stay.

I must admit to a bit of trepidation about check-in after having read the reviews here. While I did not necessarily experience anything negative, I also did not experience a friendly and welcoming smile. The front desk staff seemed at best, cordial. If you have read any of my other hotel reviews, you will know how high a value I place on my check-in experience. Hotel managers that do not train the front desk staff to be gracious, friendly and smile are doing themselves and their establishment AND the guests a major disservice.

A bellman assisted me with my luggage and I was shown to my room. Upon leaving my room, the bellman noticed something in the corner of the room and commented that he needed to "get that back down...don't know what that is doing in here". The object was a rather large axe on a very long handle which he then said belonged to the suit of armour on the stairs we had just come up. We both chuckled a bit wondering how it had made it's way into the room.

The room was quite spacious and clean with a western view in the original house (but, no river for me, sadly). The closet had a small safe that was placed on the floor. The safe was only about 8 inches high and it was difficult to use since you had to get down on your hands and knees and even then, bend down to use it. The bath was not huge, but was clean, shiny and had a very nice small rain shower.

The insulation in the hotel is quite good in that I never heard another guest, not above or below or adjacent to my room and I know the hotel was full.

After freshening up, I headed downstairs for a cuppa (passing the suit of armour, now complete). There are several common rooms, one in the bar area, one a large lounge and the other a "library room". Finding a seat on a very comfortable sofa in the lounge, I settled in with the newspaper and a very friendly waitress brought me tea which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I dined at the hotel that evening and as often happens when I am travelling alone, was given a table that had neither view nor any other redeeming qualities. I was sort of stuck in the back of the dining room in a dull dark corner. The meal however, made up for my location. It was well prepared and presented and the service was ok (could use more smiles though!).

Breakfast the next morning was fine (not superb food but surely adequate) and I did not experience the wonderful service of my tea the afternoon before. The breakfast staff seemed a bit stressed and I am not sure if maybe they were shorthanded. If not, then they too could use some additonal training.

I stayed at Oakley Court just the one night as I was flying out of Heathrow in the afternoon. It was a short and easy drive to the airport.

I would definitely stay at the hotel again and will hope that the front desk staff receive some additional training on how important that first contact with a guest is and that all the staff take some smiling lessons!

This hotel is perfect for romantics, a business meeting, a getaway for the girls or really for anyone wanting to just take a step off the main road and relax a bit. It is also perfect for a night before departing from Heathrow, if you would like something with a bit of character. Children would probably not find the hotel particularly interesting (other than the pool...oh, and maybe the suits of armour!). It is definitely a grown-up place.

A Very Comfortable Two Days

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband, three children, my parents, and I stayed here on two separate occasions over our 3 week visit to England. Although some of the criticisms mentioned in prior reviews are true, this is a great place to stopover for an American family on the move through England. The room arrangements in the new building are very much as they are in the States with two double beds and rollaway per room to accommodate a third child. (VERY difficult throughout England!!) The bathrooms are well-appointed and spacious (another rarity!) and very clean. The grounds are beautiful, with a large lawn for casual games of croquet, and a gorgeous walking path along the Thames. The old mansion itself is beautiful. It does cater a bit more to the corporate traveler: more adequately staffed and better food when meetings were taking place. The pool/workout area was definitely not kid-friendly, but we only used in minimally, anyway. There is no bellman to handle your luggage. We found breakfast to be good, but dinner unacceptable. Literally. (We discovered a place the locals love about 1 mile on the left toward Windsor, and we dined there repeatedly for evening meals.) Having said this, I will reiterate that we still truly enjoyed our stay and would (and will) definitely go again. We view it more as a place to spend a night or so to recover from jet lag, than a week-long destination. And it certainly fulfilled those expectations.

A Disappointment

from A TripAdvisor Member
I was very disappointed with my stay here, especially when I found that our bedroom was not in the lovely main building at all, but a new building round the side (which looks just like a travel inn). Worse still it was opposite the building used for wedding receptions etc; and there happened to be a party going on, so I was kept awake until the early hours of the morning. As mentioned by other reviewers I too encountered the hotel's surly and unpleasant reception staff. A smile costs nothing! On check-out they also tried to charge us for things that we didn't have. It's such a shame because the main building is lovely as are the grounds, but because of the poor customer service I would never want to return here again!

Fantastic building, great hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
The buildings are fabulous as are the gounds.

The gothic building is a masterpiece, used in the St. Trinians and Hammer Horror films. The grounds are exquisite, located on the banks of a very tranquil stretch of the Thames.

Pay extra for a suite in the main building, it is worth every penny.

The staff are friendly and helpful, the restaurant does great food and the bar is friendly and efficient.

It's no wonder Manchester United stay here the night prior to the FA Cup final, it's a great hotel. Try it!

Nice place with the worst staff ever

from A TripAdvisor Member
Upon arrival we experienced the unfriendlyness of the staff immediatly by not getting any help with the bags. We had to carry our stuff up the stairs (no elevator). Then we made a reservation for late dinner. Arriving at the restaurant at 9pm they didn´t want to serve us any food anymore. First they didn´t have a table available (although 6 tables were empty), then they said that we had to wait 1 hour to get food ... ?! We ended up going to a local pub where we had a lot of fun and some good fish&chips. The next morning the concierge couldn´t help us with directions and was unwilling to do a search on the internet etc. ("we don´t have internet here").
The rooms in the main house are nice, although the mattress is as ancient as the building itself. The beds are very small and not suitable for taller or bigger people. Breakfast is the usual greasy hotel food, but at least they offer some muesli and yogurt as an healthy alternative.
It seems like the hotel is spoiled by its location and the frequency of corporate events. They just don´t care about individual travellers.

Beautiful room, gorgous setting

from Lovely_Liv
Oakley Court is well located for Windsors many attractions. Rooms were large, well decorated and maintained to a very high standard. Highly recomended.

As regular visitors to this area we would normally stay at the Castle Hotel in the centre of Windsor, however, on this occasion this hotel was fully booked and we made a reservation with the Oakley Court Hotel.

We were initially concerned about the location of the hotel, approx. 3 miles from Windsor, and our lack of knowledge of the establishment. As it turned out we had nothing to be concerned about.

The hotel is located within expansive landscaped grounds on the banks of the river thames complete with ample parking, a golf course and health club - the setting was absolutely perfect. The hotel itself was of a high standard in respect of the facilities available, efficiency / courteousy of the staff and overall decor / furnishings. Walking through the corridors to your room usually gives a good first impression, and this was up there with the best. The bedroom itself was extremely spacious, beautifully furnished, very clean and well provisioned. The views over the grounds were an added bonus.

Breakfast was of a very good standard based on a buffet arrangement with a good range of options.

This break was part of our silver wedding celebration and we took our one year old granddaughter to enjoy her first stay in a hotel. The only problem we encountered was the lack of a refrigerator in the room which had been removed for servicing, however, the staff arranged for my granddaughters feed bottles to be stored in their own refrigerator and were delivered to the room as required - very promptly with no fuss.

Overall we were very pleased with our stay and will most certainly return.

Great hotel, very friendly staff

from Angelika1234
I loved the photos on the internet, so decided to book the Oakley Court though there were negative ratings as well - especially with regard to the unfriendly staff.
We only spent there one night in June, booked a standard room via the Internet for a very good rate thinking that we cannot expect too much, as they won't give you a good room for just one night.
The staff was very friendly from the beginning and we got a room with a fantastic view of the Thames. The hotel and the surroundings really were amazing. It is like living in a castle; very romantic and quiet. There are however also rooms with no view and not located in the nice garden. So we were lucky.
The city of Windsor is about 3 miles away and you have to take a taxi (9 pounds). We wanted to walk, but did not as we were told that it is not a nice walk at all, along the motorway, which was true.
I really can recommend this hotel very much and would return.

Need to get good reception staff!

from AmsterdamPoppet
When we drove up to the Oakely we were excited, it looked gorgeous but the excitement soon withered away after checking in. The receptionist did not greet us, she was rude, we had to ask her directions to our room and we had to carry our own luggage. When we entered room I headed for mini bar for bottle of water, as I was really thirsty. Imagine my frustration to find it locked. When I tried to call down to reception there was no information on phone on what I must dial to reach the front desk. I found the hotel booklet flicked through it to look for phone instructions and found nothing. My boyfriend (whom is a little more patient then yours truly) found the number to dial in the introductory paragraph. Call me crazy but things like calling the reception should be clearly stated. When I finally called reception I asked the girl who served us why the mini bar was locked? She replied that we had to leave a deposit in order to use it. Firstly I told her that I found this procedure rather odd but secondly and most importantly why didn’t she tell us this when we were checking in? Her reply? She forgot. The rest of the stay at the Oakley was excellent and I found the other staff helpful. However checking out was another drama with the same girl but won’t bore you with that story.

s hard to beat.

We are a very fussy family of three and have stayed in some supposedly luxury hotels. We stay at this hotel around twice a year and consider it a 'home from home'. We have never had a problem whilst staying here (although we have never eaten dinner at the restaurant).
We have just returned home from another stay here after cutting short our trip to London in a Holiday Inn with a room barely large enough to swing a cat. As soon as we turned into the drive of the Oakley Court, we all felt totally relaxed knowing that we would be staying in a lovely large room with a fantastic room overlooking the river Thames in a quality hotel with a superb setting.
Some other reviewers have mentioned the unfriendly staff - well we have never encountered this. Only this morning the receptionist gave us a friendly tour of three of the mansion suites when we asked if we may look at one for a possible future visit. The lady who is in charge of the restaurant at breakfast is a little 'bossy' but we believe she has been there for 24 years and certainly knows her stuff!
We cannot recommend this hotel enough. In fact we try not to tell too many of our friends and family about it in case they all turn up during one of our special getaways!
Any tips? Don't forget your pound for the locker (refundable) when you go for a swim. Take up the offer of the free newspapers and magazines left in the lobby each day. Try to get a room with a river view, it makes all the difference.
