Bad Managment

The service in the restaurant has diminshed quite substantially since we were last there 3 years ago. We felt the need to bring this fact to the managers attention, but, when we finally spoke to her after an extremely long wait, we found her to be most un-receptive to our comments. I firmly believe that people in her position should be blessed with some kind of people skills, this lady unfortuantely, did not. On a brighter note the reception staff were a delight and the hotel is in a beautiful position.

Historical Traveller Reviews of The Old England Hotel

Outstanding Hotel

from VAM1
Absolutely outstanding Hotel in prime lakeside location. Luxurious surroundings, excellent food and service, supremely helpful and friendly staff and a temptation to sink into complete sloth in the Hotel and not take in the wonderful lake district.

This place was terrible

from Rodsbabe
We stayed here for two nights and it was terribly disappointing. The website makes it look nice but it is a very tired and worn facility in every area--rooms, lobby, sitting rooms.

I have traveled many places and this was without a doubt the WORST staff I've ever encountered--not just one or two but everyone. They were badly trained and could not even answer the simpliest questions regarding the area. No one on the staff we encountered was even pleasant. They acted as though they hated working there as much as we hated staying there.

The location was nice. Right on the lake with beautiful sunsets each night but that was the only positive thing I can say. I would not stay there again.

The views are stunning!

from Vicci142
Went in on speck and given a stunning room with views over the well maintained gardens to the lake, could not be better!

The Autumn colours were stunning!

The location was fantastic, the bedroom was all you could ask for and the comfort in the public rooms was excellent.

Dinner was great as was breakfast, the staff were very helpful, and friendly.

Sitting in the gardens was a lovely lazy way to spend a few hours but also endless things to do if you had the energy!

Although there was building/renovation going on this caused us no problems except the lift was not working, and this was made very clear to us on booking. As I have mobility problems the staff ensured I was giveing a suitable room and told to just ring for anything!

Would visit again.

We spent 2 nights at this beautifuly situated Hotel. All the staff were very helpful, friendly and professional. Our large room was very well furnished and extremely clean with a new en suite. The food was excellent, both breakfasts and the evening meals were cooked and presented to perfection. We will definitley stay at this Hotel again if in the area.

well worth a visit

I must say that i did read some reviews that didnt really do this hotel justice! but when we arrived all those reviews went out the window.
The staff were always there to help.. anything you wanted they would do their best to get it for you, if there was something wrong with your room they would be there straight away to sort it out. although we didnt have dinner in the hotel the variety @ breakfast was amazing you could have as much or as little as u liked, and it was all to a high standard.
The rooms which me and my family had were also to a high standard. we were situated in the older part of the hotel, and the standard was high! rooms were perfect and were cleaned everyday with new bedding and everything u needed. My parents were in the newer part of the hotel and although i think there room wasnt as good as the rest of ours, there view was something else!! they were meters from the lake! What a view 2 wake up 2!

If anyone is thinking about going 2 this hotel and spendin a few days there, i think u will love it coz we most certainly did! and hope to go again!

Relaxing and welcoming

Booked an overnight stay over the internet at the last minute, package included breakfast and evening meal. Arrived at 2 pm and allocated a garden view room which actually looked over the well kept garden and onto the lake, the room looked as if it had been recently refurbished.
The view from the dining room was fantastic, we had a window table for both evening meal and breakfast, and the food could not be faulted. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, felt like 'home from home' comfort wise with comfy sofa's in the lounge area. Can't wait to pay a return visit!

Wonderful Hotel

We cannot fault the Old England at all. It was undergoing some refurbishment work at the time of our stay but this did not cause any inconvenience at all. The room we stayed in was just a few yards from the lake itself and afforded a spectacular view. The food was great and the staff all friendly and attentive. I would reccomend this hotel to anyone. So much so that we are holding our wedding reception here later this year.

Nice view but needs attention to details

from RichardSoutheast
This is a 3* that wants a 4* - but the details are lacking. I had high expectations for my first stay at a Macdonald Hotel but it is probably my last. Well situated in a tourist town - quiet with a great view and location directly on the lake. My room was nicely appointed and bright but the bath tile could use a good scrubbing and there were several spider nests in the room corners. Really the room needed freshening up but I was told it was all that was available at the price paid! Public areas were elegent but were a bit tired too. Renovations in progress but they did not interfere with stay. The discounted price paid did not include breakfast, which brought price up to about the posted list price for B/B (75 pounds).

Fabulous Easter break

from A TripAdvisor Member
We booked a room in February, on a half board basis with Leisure Breaks(brochure found in most travel agents). We stayed for two nights(29th to 31st March) at a cost of £65 pppn. I requested a lake view, later through the hotel, at no extra charge and was not dissappointed.
Everything about the hotel was fabulous from the accomodation, friendly staff to the delicious food. I am so glad that I chose to ignore some of the previous reviews. Goodness knows what standards they must apply to rate it 'terrible'.
My husband and I will not hesitate to return after the multi million pound refurb but I bet we won't get it at this price again!

from TripAdviserreader
Had an overnight stay here in October. Booked it via the internet and paid £85 for room only. Bedroom was tiny with view onto side street. Bathroom was poor, with the smallest shower cubicle you have ever seen and a poor quality shower. My partner and I are both six foot plus and I think it was designed for midgets! First impressions of hotel are VERY disappointing - frayed tatty carpets in lobby. Will need a BIG refurb to bring this hotel up to standard. Won't be visiting it again.
