Do Not Stay at This Hotel

If I could have given this a zero rating, I would have. The mattress on our bed was broken with the springs sticking out and a missing handle on a long window in our room meant it would be extremely easy to fall out of the window if off-balance, in fact my partner almost did fall out of the window himself.

When we raised these issues with the owner in a polite and constructive manner we were completely shocked by his reaction. In fact he used what can only be described as the most foul and offensive language to tell us to get out of his hotel. When I said I would be taking the matter further, he laughed.

Prior to our discussion with the owner we had witnessed a distressing situation when he attempted to throw out a young woman carrying a baby who was visiting an elderly resident as “children are not allowed in my hotel”.

The bedroom was tiny and bore no relationship to the rooms shown on the web site and the food represented very bad value for money.

The whole experience was akin to Fawlty Towers without the good humour. I cannot believe this man is in business.

All I can say is do not book with this hotel!!!! They took a non refundable 50% deposit of us without telling us on the phone and I received bank charges!!! Not only that two days before we were due to stay I was rushed into hospital to have my appendix removed and to be then told we would not have our money refunded. I am absolutely devastated as we had saved especially for this trip and the comments we receievd back were "that's business" and hung up the phone. I shall be taking this matter further legally and would advise anyone even though you can take insurance not mnay of us do for a last minute weekend and do not think you will be rushed into hopsital at 26 but do not let any hotel in particular this one take your money and leave you like they have left us.
4 stars? You are joking...avoid at all costs

Great location, shame about the staff. We booked for 4 days for our honeymoon in December, the room was fine (if you excuse the wonky taps, unflushed loo paper and no wardrobe) with excellent views across Windermere. Unfortunately the person running the place for that week couldn't have cared less and was just plain rude. Neither of us have been made to feel so unwelcome in any place we've EVER stayed in and this being our honeymoon we were doubly disappointed. A request for a bottle of wine in the hotel bar was greeted with a grunt and the bottle plonked down on the table without a word…there was only us 2 in the bar. This was no exception, his attitude throughout our stay was unacceptable, we even left a day early and forfeited a nights money. The much heralded restaurant was shut for the week but at least that meant we could escape to eat where we were made to feel welcome. On speaking to the owner on his return to complain he was equally uninterested with our experience at his hotel. Obviously he had our money and couldn't care less if we ever returned. Shame Applegarth ‘Hotel'.

Best weekend of our lives

from A TripAdvisor Member
The hotel owners are two of the nicest people we have met... From the moment we entered the hotel till the second we left we were at home! Every room had a tranquil and calm character that was comforting and warm. The hotel is marvellously decorated and as extensive travellers we were both extremely impressed with the layout and quality of room. The food was perfect and as for the service… it felt like staying with family. I would advise anyone to stay at the Applegarth Hotel.

Thank you Al and Susan for making our engagement to each other a fond dream that we will treasure for a long time. Steve & Kat

beautiful hotel with 1st class service

from ClouiseB
Suzanne and Alan have really done an amazing job with this hotel. You can tell how much love and attention has been put into, not only the hotel but its guests.
The four poster rooms are beautiful and the views are totally breath taking. If you're going to Windermere this should be the only hotel you look at.

My girlfriend and i stayed over the christmas period and could not have hoped for a better vacation.

We loved everything both the hotel and the lakes had to offer.

The staff were friendly, the food was great, the view was beautifull and the entertainment was ingenious.

Overall i would personally give the stay 10/10 and will most certianly be returning in the near future.

Fantastic holiday, keep up the good work

super weekend at the Applegarth

On our arrival at the Applegarth, we recieved a very warm welcome from the owners Mr and Mrs Mumford. We found the hotel to be a hidden gem in Windermere. The Applegarth is a traditional lakeland hotel with a luxurious decor and a friendly relaxed atmosphere. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. We shall certainly be staying there again!!!

Fabulous Hotel

from minack
After reading one of the comments on tripadvisor I was looking forward to meeting Basil Fawlty. Never was I so disapointed. The owners and staff were absolutely charming and the food was to die for. This is a country house hotel in the heart of Windermere village with all the attractions on their doorstep.
Would recommend this hotel to everyone, you will not be disappointed unless you wish to meet Basil!

Great Weekend

Right in the centre of windermere, easy to find excellent for walking and sight seeing. Staff very helpful in advising places to go. Hotel is fabulous in modern victorian style. Warm and comfortable with luxureous homely feel, food was so delicious we didn't bother eating anywhere else. Seems like improvements are set to be made which can only make it better.

from VisitorsfromYork
If I had read the two previous reviews I would never have booked the Applegarth, but they had not yet been posted when I did. However, we had a perfectly good stay: our room was semi-basement and a bit bland, but well-furnished, indeed the whole hotel is charmingly furnished with interesting Arts-and-Crafts touches, such as the stained glass in some of the windows. The staff were fine: mostly pretty young, but they knew what they were doing, although they weren't very swift to clear the breakfast tables - the remains of other peoples' meals are not a pretty sight! The breakfasts and the evening meals were good though and there was a relaxing atmosphere. Some reservations: a reviewer mentioned notices on the breakfast table about extra charges; we didn't see any of those, but you did feel as if it was all calculated to the last penny. Everything was brought to your table at breakfast, no helping yourself and the hotel information folder in your room told you they would charge you for extra tea or coffee and they only ever put out two sachets of each at a time! It even said they would charge you £2.50 for instructions for using the room safe! However, we did have a very cosy stay, it's a lovely building and it was a good place to settle in for the evening as the weather wasn't great.

Poor service

from A TripAdvisor Member
Have NEVER been so poorly treated by a hotel owner. Pushes the boundaries of offensiveness and lack of customer service to the point of utter disbelief. Runied good week away.

Spoiled my visit

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed for two nights in a single en suite room. There was no hot water in my shower on both nights. I was allowed to use the shower in a different room on the afternoon of the 2nd day of my stay.

When settling the bill, the short fall in facilities was discussed with the owners.

At this point the owner became abusive, aggressive and threatening. I was called a troublemaker, accused of breaking the shower myself, and told to ---- off on a least three occasions. (Apologies, but these were his exact words)

Finally, despite having been told expressly not to do so, the owner charged the balance of the bill to the credit card that was used to pay the deposit on the room. (This was not my card but the card of another person who I was travelling with)

Room with a view

My wife and I recently spent a weekend at the Applegarth Hotel in Windermere. We were really pleased with the standard of the hotel, especially our lovely four-poster bedroom with fantastic fell views.

I would definitely recommend a break at this hotel as it has been refurbished to a very high standard, especially in the rooms, bar and foyer.

Frist class!
