Historical Traveller Reviews of Low Wood Hotel

Fantastic stay even with the builders

from A TripAdvisor Member
We just returned from a weekend break at the Low Wood, I must say after reading some of the reviews on Trip Advisor I was a bit sceptical. However I found much of what was written to be rather over-exaggerated. Yes, the hotel is tired and this is being acted upon with the current refurbishment which is currently underway. My partner and I could easily see that much planning had gone into the project as disruption is kept very much to a minumim with all the work being carried out behind temporary walls. We stayed from Thursday to Sunday. The builders left on Friday and the weekend was quiet. The food in the hotels main restaurant is definately worth the slightly exuberant price. Breakfast could not be faulted. The bar is also part of the refurbishment, but the hotel has done a great job of creating a temporary bar complete with a door leading out onto the lawns.

Our bedroom was comfortable with a stunning Lake View. Be warned though there is a road right outside the hotel. The noise did subside at night though. We were near the Leisure club which looked fabulous, however we didn't get the chance to use the facilities with all the sightseeing we did.

To be honest we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the staff were fantastic and we would definately return once the work is complete.

Mislead by the 4star rating

Have just returned from this dreadful hotel which according to them has been given the hotel of theyear award of Cumbria what a joke! I cannot imagine what the other entrants were like. When I asked if there was a lake view room, the receptionist said "No all the nice rooms have gone", My husband had booked this on April 6th as an anniverssary supprise, so plenty of notice given. !st room shown to us in a new annex was Dark and depressing at 3pm on a sunny day in June a tiny window the bottom ledge at eyelevel height we could not see out of.
I told them I could not possibly stay in the room. The second and last room we were offered was with a lake view BUT it wasTINY it was asingle room but with a double bed in it, the dressing table and wardrobe were child size my short dress (I am only 5ft) would not go in wardrobe without dragging on the floor. We were told the restaurant was booked so had to eat in the Bistro (after a five hour drive we did not want to drive out to find somewhere else) we were given the only table that faced a wall everyone else had a lake view , The food was awful, I could not eat my main meal at all. should be 2/3 star All in all real con shall never go there again. Sun when we were due home we booked a meal at the lakeside hotel newby bridge also four star but should easily have been five compared to Low wood.

food amazing!

We booked in at the Low Wood as a last minute getaway, and were not dissapointed. We had a fantastic room (36) overlooking the lake. The bathroom was very modern with 'stars' in the ceiling over the jacuzzi bath. The bedroom was large and very clean. It was a surprise to us to get a waterbed! which was a novelty.. The windermere restaurant was very modern and staff were very attentive. The food was fabulous. I would definately recommend this hotel.

Great staff, needs improving

Just come home from a great break away in the Lake District. Stayed at the Low Wood for 4 nights.
Staff are great, really friendly. We had our 6yrd old with us and they did everything they could for her. Room was nice, did pay a supplement for a lake view but got a corner window view! (room 23). But to be fair to them they did immediately take off the supplement. Rooms are clean but there is a lot of spring cleaning required, skirting boards, chrome around shower and taps , radiators etc etc.

Main restaurant good food and service lovely.
Cafe del Lago downstairs in the leisure centre TERRIBLE. Food does not come as stated on menu, over cooked, staff have no clue. But again they did take the food bill off, but I would have prefered to pay to have a nice dinner!

Gym is great, pool is v badly designed, changing rooms terribly dirty and small.-girls don't know about the boys!

Breakfast is lovely.
They are having a huge re fit this year of all the downstairs, so that will be nice to see as it is a beautiful space inside. I would go back, purely for the staff if nothing else!

This hotel is nothing like the pictures!!!!!I wouldn't give this hotel a 4 star. We booked this hotel thinking it would be secluded and on the lake, there was a very busy main road infront of the hotel and it was far from on its own. The rooms were freezing and the bathroom was even colder. The room was basic. We would have expected this standard froma B&B not a 4 star hotel. The bath was dirty and the room dull. We paid £100.00 for the night and it wasn't until the morning we found out this was a room only basis although this may not have been the hotels fault but the site we booked it from not giving clear enough information (watch out for this on laterooms.com) Overall its wasn't a unpleasent stay but it wasn't the great hotel we were expecting we won't be going back.

disappionting

Thought we would treat ourselves to a romantic stay at this hotel, we were met by a cloud of cigarette smoke in the reception, and it went downhill from there, the room was noisy & shabby, the bathroom had seen better days, however nice toiletries. The leisure club was very tried & unclean, it looked about 15 years out of date, the only compensation was the resturant was very nice, wouldn't stay here again unless I knew it had been through a complete refurbishment, I would highly recomend The Lake House Hotel in Ambleside.

Dump of a place.

On arriving we discovered that the hotel was actually on a main road - this was very deceiving as we booked our trip through the internet and the photographs and wording suggested that the hotel was in its own grounds with lawns running down to the shores of Lake Windermere. It turned out the photos were taken from the lake itself and no mention was made that a very busy main road separates the hotel from the lake - No relaxing peaceful walks to be had here!
The hotel was also very busy with various conferences on and there were no parking spaces available. We were vaguely told to park in the marina opposite but this has an electronic security barrier and there was no access to be had. After the stressful 10 minute wait to simply get the car back across the very busy road (constant streams of traffic in both directions in March, who knows what it's like in summer) we finally managed to abandon our car at the side of the road.
Once we made it into the hotel the receptionist was rude, uninterested andunhelpful. Perhaps his mood wasn't helped by the fact that the customer he'd served directly in front of us had been complaing about the hotel and general lack of good service!
Finally making it to the bedroom we were sorely disappointed to find it small, dimly lit, with dreary décor, not even a mini bar, a cold mouldy bathroom and flies!
Hoping to get a chance to wind-down and relax we then went to the leisure centre to enquire about facilities, opening times etc. We stood at the leisure centre reception for at least 5 mins whilst the staff were busy chatting amongst themselves before one of them finally looked at us and came over to enquire if he could help. We had to ask every single question about the facilities without him actually volunteering any information - like getting blood out of a stone! We then asked if we could book a neck massage sometime over the next 3 days, he told us to ask a girl who had arrived on the scene. She simply said "fully booked" without even looking at the appointment book. The man then pointed out a cancellation in the book saying
"what about that cancellation?" but she slammed the book shut and repeated "Sorry fully booked" in the most patronising and snooty possible way. Shocking, abrupt, rude and odd behaviour!
As for the hotel on the whole, black tape sticking down carpet, tacky old décor, ramshackle layout, corridors smelling of sick and mould even with airfresheners in every nook and cranny, a bedroom so cold we had to phone and ask for a heater. blah blah - what a disgrace - 4 star it most certainly wasn't....
Ultimately we ended up staying away from the hotel apart from to sleep, completely disillusioned that after spending hundreds of pounds to go and stay at what was meant to be a top class hotel - for my birthday I might add - this is not the service that we would expect from what is rated as 4 star
service.
At the end of all this I sent a letter of complaint to the management giving them an opportunity to comment on all this. I am most disappointed to say that I have had no response whatsoever but that to me sums up the attitude of all concerned in the poor running and operation of the Low Wood Hotel.

A bit of a disappointment.

We arrived for a three night stay for dinner bed and breakfast and had paid extra for a lake view. The room was a bit disappointing as needed some updating, however the view was fantastic. The hotel is situated very close to the lake but is on a very busy road so you cannot open your bedroom window for traffic noise. I was also slightly disappointed at the lesiure facilities, the ladies changing rooms were rather grotty, and outside the steam room the showers did not work properly, felt the place needed revamping. We ordered tea and scones in the lounge on our first day, and was completely embarrassed as the scones were rock hard and very stale, but the porter who brought them to us was so lovely we felt unable to complain. The Lounge was also a bit shabby and chairs and sofa's had seen better days. The resturant however had obviously just been revamped and was excellent, our evening meals were superb, only one tiny complaint that the menu never changed over our three nights so by the third night we were a bit limited with choice. My husband also complained that the same CD was played over and over again in the resturant. I must stress that we were completely overwhelmed at the excellent service from the resturant staff who were vvery fast and efficient without hurrying you and extremely friendly. The only thing that made this a pleasant stay were the resturant staff and the porter who went out of their way to ensure you were being looked after. I must also state that we stayed at Low Wood's sister hotel The Waterhead two months ago which was superb and everthing about our stay fantastic and we were expecting the same from Low Wood which sadly was not delivered. We would not go back to Low Wood but would recommend The Waterhead to any couple wanting a special romantic break.

Very Disappointing Overall

from Darlolad
Upon arrival we were allocated a freezing cold, damp room which was so damp the wallpaper was peeling off and you could see the stain mark half-way up the wall. I complained and was moved rooms to one which was warmer. The bath was filthy & the shower kept cutting out. The pool & leisure centre was so full it was dangerous. The hotel was so busy that breakfast was chaos, they just could not cope with the amount of people there and when we finally got into the restaurant, we asked no less than FOUR people to get us a pot of tea & some white toast - still had to send back the brown toast that eventually came..... Then they ran out of food on the breakfast buffet and you'd think I was asking for the earth when I said could they cook some sausages please!! Hotel have failed repeatedly to respond to my complaints & I took them through my customer comments card which obviously went straight in the bin!

VERY DOWNBEAT !!

from Jolly Explorer
My husband and I have just returned from a two night stay at Low Wood. This was our first visit to the Lakes and we were looking for something really special. The hotel did not meet our expectations. Our room was over the leisure club it was very noisy in the evening with music beating up in to the room, it was also very smokey with smoke somehow being transmitted up into the room. The room was shabby - not very clean - and the bathroom fittings were poor. We complained and were told that there were no better rooms available. We were moved higher up into the "loft" which did elliminate the noise. However this room was so pokey we could hardly move and the bathroom was almost in a cupboard!! Not at all happy with this hotel accommodation which was VERY expensive!!! We did however find the breakfast and evening meal to be good but would never contemplate staying here again.
