Historical Traveller Reviews of Langdale Chase Hotel

Nice but overpriced, with some issues

from HK79
I stayed at Langdale Chase in early August. It is a beautiful property in a fantastic location but it is, in my opinion, overpriced.

I stayed in a "garden bungalow". The bungalow was quite large but very tired. It was dirty (spiders' webs, stains on the carpet and walls, dusty etc.) and the television didn't work. I recommend that you avoid the garden bungalow if you stay here.

The restaurant food and service was excellent.

Overall, I was disappointed. Perhaps the main hotel is better.

Beautiful location - very average room

from star31
I have just returned from the Langdale chase which I booked for one night for my boyfriends birthday as a suprise. When you drive up to the Hotel it looks amazing and it is in terms of location. I did my research and decided this looked the most stunning. It was V expensive but I thought it was a one off. The views were lovely - however it started to pour with rain which I was guttted about as it had been hot for weeks. However I thought we could relax in our lovely rooms. Problem was our room was very basic. We stayed in the Garden annexe which again amazing location but the room was so chintzy nothing like i expected! It had terrible bedding, awful wallpaper and pictures on the wall. An old t.v, no air con, no iron, no hairdryer, beds pushed together, no shower I couldnt believe it - i thought it would be a bit of luxury but no way. I think to enjoy this hotel you need nice weather. You want to be able to sit outside relax and walk around the gardens and lake. When it rains it is so grey in the lakes.
We went for dinner in the evening. We sat in the conservertory which was v. small and then ate in the dinning room which was lovely great views and the food was v nice. Luckily the next morning the sun had come out and we were able to enjoy what the Langdale had to offer for the morning before we checked out.
My advice would be to pay extra for a better room but be warned that they are very chintzy - and check the weather!

perfect in everyway

We held our wedding at Langdale Chase and it was perfect in everyway. There is not one bad thing i can say about the hotel or the staff. We stayed in Room 20 and there was spectacular views from every window, the room itself was impressive. Some of our guest stayed in the Bungalows which are across the garden to the hotel, and they were so pretty they also had impressive views.
The staff made us feel so at ease and coundnt do enough for us especially Fay, Anita, James, Chris and Claire for helping us at the beginning.
We didnt want to leave on the Monday and that goes for the rest of our guest. The hotel is spotless and the food is out of ths world. I can honestly say that we will keep going back to Langdale Chase as it is the most magical place we have been to.

Outstanding in every way

We hosted our wedding at the Langdale Chase in September 2005. We stayed in the hotel from Friday to Sunday, together with a number of our wedding guests. The hotel is in the most beutiful location, with breathtaking views - the key reason why we selected the venue in the first place. Our party had booked a number of the deluxe rooms which have amazing views. I can only say that the whole weekend was absoultely superb - a dream in fact. The staff at the hotel are so friendly and helpful - nothing is too much trouble.
We ate in the restaurant on two evenings and the food was exceptional - this was the opinion of all of the guests who stayed with us during the weekend. The wedding breakfast was exactly how we had hoped it would be, with excellent yet unobtrustive service. We were allowed to completely tailor our menu - guests had selected their own choices from a range of dishes.
The grounds offer unlimited photo opportunities. At the end of the day the wedding party had a cruise around Lake Windermere on a privately chartered Windermere Cruises launch that was able to dock at the hotel's private jetty.
We stayed in the Boat House on our wedding night - the room itself is fairly standard in decor but it is the most amazing location. We ate breakfast on the roof terrace with swans swimming around the boardwalk below.
I would highly recommend anyone to stay at this hotel, it is simple exceptional.

Outstanding

This is the most magnificent of hotels. The views and surroundings are as good as anywhere in the world and the service and staff are second to none.

The rooms are spacious and tasteful and the food is excellent. Nothing is too much trouble and our five year old daughter was treated like royalty, spending ages playing with Nobby the dog!

I cannot fathom that anyone could give this idyllic experience other than a 5 star rating. It is a reflection on them, not the hotel.

We can thoroughly recommend Langdale Chase and can't wait to go back there again to take in the views and the relaxing atmosphere. First Class.

Loved everything about it

from Dil47
Having just returned from here this afternoon I felt I must say how wonderful everything about this hotel was. I was travelling alone for a short break and found all the staff could not have been more helpful, nothing was too much trouble, but at the same time they were not too intrusive. The food and dining room service was second to none, the choice for dinner was plenty and varied and on both nights I had to resort to using a pin to select my dessert. On the third night I decided to try the bar meal and once again was not disappointed. My room was overlooked the lake and the views are to die for. It was exceptionally clean and I could fault nothing. I will have no hesition in recommending this hotel to friends and work colleagues, will be back again later this year and am already arranging to take my daughter back there this time next year.

Exceptional Location, Disappointing Accommodations

from janices7
We chose Langdale Chase because of its excellent location on the shores of Lake Windermere. We stayed in the only room at the hotel that has a deck/balcony which is huge and looks directly out over the gardens and the lake. The view was spectacular as expected. However, the staff should really consider adding lounge chairs to the deck area for relaxing. The current chairs aren't comfy at all.

The hotel and common rooms were OK - not exceptional. However, the room itself was quite disappointing and dated. The "king" bed was 2 singles pushed together which was quite uncomfortable. Everything was just plain worn out including the bedspread, curtains, chairs and pillows. It was not at all luxurious and the instant my husband opened the door to the room, I was disappointed.

In addition, the 2 days that we were there, the grounds crew decided to clean up some branches/storm damage that had been there well over a year (according to the receptionist). Everyday, they lit a fire directly adjacent to our room and since the winds were toward the hotel, we were basically smoked out and had to close all the windows and couldn't use the deck/balcony that we had paid all that extra money for. I called the front desk to complain, but they weren't too receptive so we were only able to utilize the deck in the evenings after the burning stopped (around 4 or 5 PM).

The breakfast and restaurant service was horrible. I had to send my scrambled eggs back (which I had ordered "dry") because they were completely runny. I kindly asked that she have the chef put them back in the pan for a minute. Literally, 10 minutes later she came back with my plate of food. The bacon was completely dried out and the eggs had a "crust" on top of them (they were still completely raw in the middle). She clearly had taken the plate and set it under the heat lamp for 10 minutes. Needless to say, I couldn't even eat breakfast that day. The next morning, I just had cereal and milk.

It is too bad that the accommodations were so disappointing because with this location, they could easily be a 5 star hotel with some restoration and staff training.

Excellent Location, Fantastic staff

My wife and I got married at the Langdale Chase in Dec 2005. The location was perfect and the views were stunning.

We stayed there from Friday to Sunday, and from the minute we arrived there, we found the staff to be friendly and helpful.

The hotel has a lot of character, and all the rooms are very individual and tastefully decorated.

We had a party of 30 who stayed in the hotel with us, so we used the Oak room for our wedding breakfast which the hotel arranged beautifully.

The day itself was perfect and the staff were all very professional and helpful without being obtrusive.

The food was excellent and the wedding cake which the chef made at our special request was superb.

Overall, our weekend at the Langdale was a wonderful experience.

Very Relaxing

This Hotel stuck in my memory from a stopover I made in 1980! My wife and I stayed for 3 nights in November, and it was as I remembered. Very relaxing, good food and a pleasant room, with lake views. A perfect location.

the boat house

having just spent a weekend in the boathouse i had to write to say that it was fantastic.the views, the swans, the squirrels everything about it was lovely.as for the bathroom being to small i just wonder where some people think they are going to magic the space from?both me and my wife found it great i even had trouble getting her to leave the room to go sight seeing! the service in the hotel itself was fantastic and the food perfect and the walk back to the room in the dark was fun!!after a few drinks.

Top Local Tips for Windermere

Lake District Winderemere is a lovely area but don't stay at the Langdale Chase Hotel.

Taxis/ trains There is an excellent link to Windermere for the mainline London Euston to Glasgow line. This runs from Oxenholme and goes directly to Windermere. Taxi's wait all day at the tain station at Windermere and can whisk you to your hotel in 10 minutes. I would tend to use this mode of transport as taxi's are reasonably priced and the traffic in and out of the Lake District an be horrific on a Friday and a Sunday afternoons.

Nice Place Do the water sports
