Historical Traveller Reviews of Holbeck Ghyll Country House Hotel

We stayed at Holbeck Ghyll on a Tursday...

from Oneirobatw
We stayed at Holbeck Ghyll on a Tursday night while my partner was on a business trip. The "beauty" of being away on your partners business trip is that you spend a lot of time alone. The staff were very helpfull and felt lookaftered. I spend most of the day next to the open fire in one of the reception room overlooking the lake. We had dinner at the hotel, the food was amazing, a bit expensive but worth it. You should have 'Chocolate' for desert-5 of your favourite chocolate based deserts in one. Will go again for longer next time to explore the area.

Dear Oneirobatw

Thank you for taking the time to compliment our staff.

I am pleased to read you were well looked after, as this is how we want all of our guests to feel during their stay. Our staff are here to help and they genuinely enjoy doing their best to ensure guests know that nothing is ever too much. However, not everyone takes the time to thank them for achieving this - hence, you should know the time you have taken to write this review is truly appreciated.

I agree in regards to the chocolate for dessert - delicious!!

Attention to detail at all times.

from JandDgolfers
We spent 2 delightful days here for a wedding. The staff were fabulous, nothing was too much trouble. The front steps were cleaned twice in the hour prior to the Bride walking in. The food was amazing - richly deserving their Michelin star. If you get time for a massage, the girl in the Spa (Sorry I can't remember her name but she is full-time there), she has the most amazing hands. A fabulous experience. The views are stunning and the hotel is a great Arts & Cratfs period property. 3 fires lit every day - fantastic!

Wonderful small country house hotel with great food and immaculate service

from jefft53
My wife and I stayed 2 nights at the Holbeck Ghyll, Feb 2010. We were really lucky with the weather but even more fortunate in our choice of where to stay. The hotel has a great atmosphere with plush but homely furnishings, open fires and great views. The service is outstanding. The dinner on the first night was so good we immediately booked in for the second, having originally planned to eat elsewhere. It has a Michelin star, and it is well-deserved! The full English was excellent as well. It's not cheap, but quality like this is worth the extra.
Management Response from Jennz77
Dear Jefft53

Thank you for your above comments.

I am glad to read you had good weather during your stay and I'm also pleased to report it has continued since you left, it has been truly stunning here the past few weeks.

Dinner time at Holbeck Ghyll is often a highly anticipated highlight of many our guests' stay and I have to tell you it comes from very hard graft from our talented team in the kitchen. However, when guests take the time to compliment our team it makes the hard work all the more worthwhile.

Hence, I would like to thank you again for taking the time to share your Holbeck Ghyll experience on Trip Advisor.

We hope you will join us again in the near future.

Beautiful food in a glorious setting, a relaxing stay - recommended

from Shezza77
My husband and I recently enjoyed a fabulous stay at this hotel. We were looking for a relaxing break in the beautiful lake district and this hotel had been recommended by friends who visit regularly. I rang the hotel up before booking to ask about different rooms and the lady was really helpful, describing the different rooms and offering several prices. We chose to stay outside of the main hotel in the lodge rooms, set in the hotel grounds but only a short walk to the main house.
The hotel is a little difficult to find, but this is because it is situated in an idyllic setting high above lake windermere, so you take a winding road up from the A591 and then up the long driveway to the hotel. What a view, its magnificent. Also the location means that the hotel is quiet and peaceful, away from any road traffic noise or tourism. It was dark and a bit misty on our arrival, so imagine our delight when we opened the bedroom curtains (and then the windows!) the next morning to see the most beautiful view across the lake and snow capped mountains.
On arrival at the hotel, we felt immediately cosseted and looked after. A huge log fire was blazing in the hall and the receptionist booked us in quickly and escorted us to our room. We had chosen a lodge room outside of the main building, these rooms are furnished in contemporary style and we liked the idea of privacy and the outside terrace area which the lodges offer. We were not disappointed. Inside our room soft music was playing and complimentary sherry was on offer. Our room was beautifully furnished and really large, with a spotlessly clean bathroom and a kitchenette area and lots of wardrobe space. We had a separate seating area in the big bay window, where we spent many hours curled up reading books and magazines and looking out at the gloriou view. We felt instantly relaxed and settled in, couldn't believe our luck! THat evening we walked across to the main hotel for dinner since we booked DBB. The restaurant has a michelin star and the meal was absolutely fabulous. We were a bit worried that it would be uber posh given the standard, but the hotel has a relaxed environ and the wood panelled dining room has a relaxed and welcoming feeling which is cosy but also allows you to have a private conversation in peace. We had a drink first in the lounge (log fires and big comfy chairs) and the sommelier recommended some wines which were lovely (we have since ordered some from our local wine shop).
My hubby and I felt so relaxed and had our best nights sleep in ages!
The next day we couldn't get over the views from our window and the terrace outside our room (I'll try and add a photo). We spent a while wandering through the hotel grounds from which you can meander down to the lakeside. There are tennis courts and croquet and lovely gardens although the time of year meant it was all quiet - am sure it will be fab in spring and summer.
The concierge recommended day trips for us and this location means you are central. The hotel also offers walking guides, luxury car hire, and even a helicopter service (bit out of our league, but maybe one day!) - it felt as if nothing would be too much trouble.
Before we left I was cheeky and asked to look at some of the other rooms (for our next stay!). I could only see a few since they were occupied but I can highly recommend room 6 - which is huge and has a massive 4 poster bed, and huge windows overlooking the lake with a little balcony area, and I also liked a room called the Tower Room which was sumptuously furnished in dark reds and had a window seat.
I would definitely return and am already dropping hints to my husband. It was more expensive than we would normally pay but the DBB rate is phenomenally good value given the quality of the food on offer. You would not get bored eating at the hotel and actually we didn't want to leave in the evenings so it suited us just fine! There is a spa but I didn't get chance :-(
By the way - this hotel was where the lake scenes from the film Miss Potter was filmed - and we were informed that our room was where REnnee Zellwegger herself stayed. Cool huh!

Of all the wonderful things you had to say the two that were particularly appreciated was one the fact you felt so looked after and two you had the best nights sleep in ages.

Delicious lunch but service issues

from YorkshireSimon
I recently visited Holbeck Ghyll for lunch and the setting was magnificent. We found the restaurant service to be a little indifferent, not what you would expect from a Michelin star establishment. The head waiter was a little pompous and patronising - we are used to fine dining and he certainly didn't enhance our experience. We didn't hear or see him for the rest of the meal. The rest of the staff were lovely, albeit a bit inexperienced and varying in their standards of service - some were professional, but others could do with some training. We can't fault the food - the chef deserves his acolades, but is currently being let down by poor service. The whole hotel feels tired, although I heard that they were about to begin some renovations. I think once they are back up to standard and sort out the service standards, it will become excellent again. I can't comment on the rooms as we were just lunch guests. We would go again, and yes, we would recommend it, as the food and setting alone makes the trip worthwhile.

Stunning location, perfect food, fabulous hotel

from Lobster7282
The staff were very attentive. The room had perfect views, great size, extremely comfortable bed and very relaxing atmosphere. The food was by far the best part of the stay, the worst part was having to go back into the busy world from an oasis of calm!

wine, this is it!

from ashdown28
Well, this is it, Perfect setting, perfect food, great staff and the best wine! I have been visiting the Lake District on a regular basis but had never tried the Holbeck Ghyll before.

Holbeck Ghyll is one of those restaurants that you never realise is there unless you are staying or it’s recommendation.

It is charming with exceptional attention to detail. Lovely country house feel, but most importantly amazing food. The Chef combines the very best of French & English cuisine with the very best of ingredients and serves everything to perfection.

I was recommended this place by the hotel we were staying in locally on several occasions, previously we had tried to book however it was always full, this time the hotel manageress booked for all 6 of us & arranged transport.

The Sommelier was fantastic and recommending great reasonably priced wines and a delight to talk to. All the staff work as a team, all with the same attention to detail, they all know the menu well and are enthusiastic to share it with you.

Only small issue was they got one dish wrong which was promptly dealt with, without fuss and an apology was made again at the point of settlement, not an issue but the way they dealt with this minor point was professional, as I was paying for friends it meant a lot as I wanted to impress & not disappoint.

I love this place, & its really special, thank you Holbeck Ghyll staff & owners, my friends are still talking about it!

Wll return soon
