Great little hotel.

from Cheyanne_7
Lovely hotel, very friendly and obliging staff. Conveniently located. In our short stay here the staff did all they could to make us comfortable. Would recommend to anyone.

Highly Recommend

from Brits at Home
Lovely old house, set back off the main Windermere-Bowness Road. Comfortable beds, clean and well supplied bathrooms. Jonathan and Caroline are recent owners and are working their tails off to make everyone feel at home - we wish them every success. Breakfasts are plentiful with an excellent variety. After a long day sightseeing, its nice to come back to relax in the lounge, bar and in house restaurant. The standard and quality of the food was excellent.

New Hosts at an Old Favourite

from pf4
We've been coming to this hotel on and off for a number of years now and has recently been taken over (for third time) by a new dynamic couple with a vision to restoring the family/friendly feel that the hotel orginally had when we started going there.
The food is excellent although the al carte menu might not suit everyone and there is only one vegetarian option which meant we ate out most evenings.
The room (Orrest Head) was large/clean/tidy and comfortable although the beautiful old windows require some senstive restoration so they can be closed properly, (an issue winter guests might have).
The couple have only been at the Cedar Manor for 9 weeks and they've already begun making minor changes to make it their own but all very tastefully done.
The only slight problem with Cedar Manor is that when full, the car parking can bit a bit of a squeeze , but this and the veggi option are the only slight criticisms in an otherwise lovely hotel in a lovely area.

We have just returned from 1 night stay at The Cedar Manor. I booked this Hotel for my partners birthday for a romantic getaway on recommendation. We absolutely enjoyed our stay despite the awful weather but i couldnt wish for a better hotel. We stayed in the Claife Heights room which was small but lovely and clean. We had an ensuite shower room which they provided bottles of shower gels, shampoo and even cotton wool and cotton buds! The bathroom was clean with nice white clean fluffy towels.
The room itself was small but it was spotlessly clean. There was a mini fridge when you opened the wardrobe with bottles of water provided. In the drawers of the wardrobe was a needle and cotton set and even shoe polish, which is a first i have ever seen..the bed was very comfortable and we had a lovely night sleep.
The Hotel is set in lovely grounds and my partner was well impressed with the original windows and the oldy worldy rooms with original features.
Also its not far for a walk to Bowness. Its a lot longer to walk to the lake in Windermere so be prepared for the uphill walk back!
We ate at the Lighthouse Restaurant in the town for Lunch which was so nice we returned later at night for Dinner. The restaurant is upstairs and the food was lovely and would recommend for anyone to try.
The breakfast in the Hotel was lovely, hot and enjoyed every bit.

I would most definately be coming back to stay again and would definately recommend anyone to stay at this Hotel.

All in all a good place to stay.

With such overall good reviews on this hotel we were some what dismayed to find new owners had taken over. However they, Caroline and Jonathan, proved to be excellent hosts. Friendly though not intrusive and very accomodating. Food was to a high standard as was service. The hotel itself is full of character with original fittings, lovely gardens. Beds and furniture are comfortable and functional. Rooms are clean and well maintained (our broken 'fridge was exchanged the same day). Bit of a walk to the lake, say 30 minutes by footpath so quite pleasant. Town of Windermere is 10 minutes walk away, Bowness (right on the lake, plenty of pubs etc, about 2 miles away. All in all a good place to stay.

Orrest Head Suite

from steve1984
We spent a night at Cedar Manor, we stayed in the Orrest Head Suite – the room was very nice but there were a few small things that let it down, the view from the bedroom was of the corner of the car park, the sitting room had a very uncomfortable double char (like conservatory furniture), due to rain we decided to watch a dvd and as the chair was so uncomfortable we decided to watch it in the bedroom and the dvd player could not be played in the bedroom, se we ended up moving the duvet to the chair – other than that everything else was perfect.

The room was very clean and tidy and the bathroom was very nice – although I did not get time to try the spa bath.

The hotel was very quiet when we stayed, only 2 other guests but we did not see them at any point, the other thing I would say is that now and again you can hear the traffic from the road – but it was nothing major.

The beautiful garden was very nice to walk around, and in the room we had a guide with some local walks in – we did one in the evening – this was a nice as we did not really know where to go.

I do agree with everyone else regarding the fact that the hotel seems to be run by one person, she was there at check in and showed us round the room, she was there at checkout and there on the bar – but did not see this as a bad thing.

We did not eat in the hotel, as we had a large lunch and then we had an early start the next morning so missed breakfast.

Lovely surroundings but pricey

from chubbster
The hotel is set in very pleasant grounds near the train station in Windermere and is a lovely building which is nicely furnished. The lady running the hotel was friendly but not overly so.

There is a very pleasant walk from the hotel to Bowness (takes about 25mins) which is an alternative route to the main road (takes about 20mins). You pass through a wood, past some big houses and a small waterfall which was a pleasant surprise.

The breakfasts were lovely and the staff were happy to substitute items, although a request for ketchup was met with "its over there" - i.e. get it yourself. A minor niggle, but an example of how the service, whilst ok, was not exceptional.

Our room was very nice. All the rooms are different and we paid extra for a suite - it had a jacuzzi bath and a flat screen TV. Unfortunately (and I'm not sure why) there were a large number of bluebottle flies in our room - we had to spend about 20 minutes trying to drive them out of the window. The room was also close to the road, so you could hear the traffic.

My only major negative is that the hotel was quite expensive for what it was, although the hotel was lovely I imagine you could find similar for less if you have the time to do your research.

Standard Hotel, nothing remarkable

from mbx4711
It is a small hotel with standard features, nothing really outstanding. Decoration is quite nice. The room we had (Wansfell) is advertised as a superior room, in fact it is at the very end of the narrow corridors, size is ok but not big. There is a bed (which is comfortable) two chairs (not very comfortable) a closet and some drawers. No writing table for example.

AA 2star seems a pretty good summarization of it.

The hotel is located roadside with a wall and a row of trees between hotel and road, just the entrance is from the back, so there was a lot of noise from the road, which is a main road with lots of traffic.

The lake at Bowness is (at least) a 30 minute walk away, and going back is (steep) uphill all the way.

We had a problem with the bathroom, besides a pathetic shower (which we decided to tolerate as the bathtub was usable) the flushing mechanism of the toilet wasn't working correctly, this wasn't repaired to our satisfaction after making a complaint about it.

Staff was all business. Besides the one women being there from breakfast to evening, when we arrived a young girl was behind the counter, all she did was asking about the car registration, and then we were wordless shown to the room, no "Welcome at ....", not even practical things like mentioning the breakfast time etc...

Breakfast is quite good though. Bar prices are ok, but with limited selection, e.g only bottled beer.

Nice Hotel - Welcome lacked warmth

from HSK_Gordon
We spent three nights at Cedar Manor. The beautiful surroundings and decor created a good first impression. Dinner in the hotel was excellent, with a decent menu and Veggie / child portions available on request. All for a set price. Breakfast was average in quality but a bit rushed and short in selection (could have been because we were mid week and not in peak season).
The hotel appeared to be run by one woman, who worked reception, bar, waited tables etc. Not a problem in itself as she demonstrated the utmost efficiency in each area - but could this be why she rarely smiled and had little time for passing pleasantries?! This lack of warmth and personal touch was made more apparent as we were travelling with our sociable 2 year old who was desperate for some acknowledgement!
The Cedar Manor is probably more suited to couples than families and is in an excellent location.

Nice friendly stay

from barkerdoyle
We recently returned from a weekend stay at the Cedar Manor in Windemere. Both myself and my girlfriend thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The hotel was very clean and tidy and had a nice laid back atmosphere. Staff too were also very welcoming (although we only saw one lady who served breakfast, worked in reception, and served dinner).
The location is excellent; a five minute walk into Windemere town centre, about 20 minutes walk to the lake, and a very short/cheap taxi ride to Bowness town centre where there is quite a good selection of bars and restaurants.
Had a great time, would definitely go back!
