Wonderful Hotel
from lindy-loo26The hotel is about 5 minutes walk from the first shops and restaurants and about 10 minutes to the Great Hall or Cathedral.
We had bed and breakfast. The breakfasts had a good variety and were hot, eggs cooked to order but be sure to ask for boiled eggs well done as mine had runny whites -yuk. The restaurant manager saw that I had not eaten them and cooked me another one, which I thought was a nice touch. We thought the food in Winchester was expensive and not a lot of restaurants to chose from, so we ended up having 2 chinese meals and a pub meal. Also not many restaurants open on Sunday evening. We had a very nice ploughmans in a pub called the Old Vine in Great Minster Street opposite the Cathedral and a nice Chinese in the Cellar Peking in Jewry Street. O'neils is nice but again no meals served on Sunday evenings.
The Great hall is very interesting and free! King Arthur's Round Table is stunning -18 feet across. The Cathedral is wonderful, the longest in Northern Europe - £4 entry but worth it as there is a lot to see and the upkeep of it must be enormous. Ask the guides around the cathedral and they will fill you in on details you would not know about.
I only live 50 miles away, but must admit I did not know that Winchester was such a lovely place.
Decent enough hotel
from Alexg2005Resembles a Travelodge from the outside, but classically contemporary inside. The bedroom was acceptable, clean and modern however, the bathroom was one of the smallest I have ever seen in an hotel, dull, dreary with a shower curtain (Yuk). No view whatsoever from the room, even rooms at the front overlook a pay and display car park.
However, Huttons Brasserie is a stunning space. Walnut floors, dark tables, white leather chairs, silver walls...very chic. The food was very good, the service shambolic. Usual issues, very young inexperienced staff, poor English etc.
The hotel is approx 10-15 minutes from the City Centre, set in a very quiet location.
If you get a decent rate, you won't be disappointed.
Refurbished

from gumba69Modern, functional, reasonably well situated.
from A TripAdvisor MemberOne reviewer highlighted the hotel’s location as being too far from the centre. Well my wife and I strolled to the top of the High Street in ten minutes. The cathedral is ten to fifteen minutes further on. If any or your party is old or infirm this may be a problem, otherwise I do not believe it is a hindrance. Another thing to bear in mind should you have someone infirm in your party, the hotel did not seem to have a lift, despite there being two floors.
What may be off putting is the massive pay and display car park in front of the hotel. The building will win no architectural awards but having a fleet of tour buses parked out front doesn’t do it any favours either. The occupants of the buses were not staying in the hotel I must add.
We did not eat at the hotel, apart from breakfast which was good enough. The staff are certainly a friendly bunch and seemed to be coping pretty well with the chaos caused by the refurbishment.
All in all, the Winchester is a pleasant enough place in a modern hotel-ish sort of way. It’s not badly located and will have very good rooms when fully refurbished. If your tastes run to the picturesque country house hotel, then you may find the Winchester a disappointment.
Nice and good value 4 money!
from AKVLondonAs It rained pretty much all the time, we were in doors quite alot, but the hotel has its own indoor pool, which was small but fun (altho a little on the cold side!), and a small, but well equipt fitness gym and also a steam room (altho this was tiny too) - But at least it provided a relaxing alternative to just sitting around!
We also booked a massge @ the hotel, about £15.00 each for 30 mins - but remember to book in advance, as the massge sessions get booked up really very early!
A buffet breakfast was included in the price, and it was well worth it - We were even able to have hot cheesy omletttes cooked 4 us - which was a treat! However on 2 of the days, they didn't had a couple of the buffet items available for breakfast - that was a little dissapointing.
The staff waited on us very well - even provided us with an umbrella, which we forgot, when it was raining! The staff were nice & friendly, and always willing to help.
The rooms are a little on the small side, but very cosy and warm. You have everything you need, with nice decor and cable TV, but the bath tub's are tiny - not enough space for a romatic bubble together!!!
A few small complaints, they didn't tell us (even when we called in advance to ask) that the jet spa was out of order - we were quite looking forward to that. The dinner and lunch menu is a little on the expensive side, and snacks and sandwiches are totally overpriced - we got pizza delivered and indian take out from the local town every night - that was great!
A nice stay, if your not looking for 5* level comfort and facilities.
We were on a tight budget, so we got good value for our money. We didn't want 2 come home! Winchester's a lovely place to explore - if the sun's out!!
We had a great time overall, and would probably go back - but maybe not in the middle of rainy march next time!!
Overpriced and poor rooms.
from thurschildNot as nice as it looks
from A TripAdvisor MemberIf you are looking for a place to explore Winchester Town, this is not it. It is too far away from the town centre to enjoy a quick walk through a nice area to get there.
Top Local Tips for Winchester
Snack and history For a great snack and some history go to the bakers behind the Buttercross - they have great pastries, pasties and all kinds of traditional English treats. Afterwards you can sit on the Buttercross steps and eat it (rain permitting) as people have done for hundreds of years.
They have a library with internet access that is open on Sundays! I personally found the fact that Winchester Library was open on Sunday and allows you to use the internet even if you are not a local resident to be really helpful if you want to check up on emails and don't have a laptop for access to the net in your hotel. I also love having a library open on a Sunday to be a great thing in general as it certainly doesn't happen everywhere! Even if you are not religious, Winchester Cathedral is a beautiful building and well worth looking at inside - you can appreciate the architecture of the place regardless of what you do or don't believe in (and I don't!)
things to do get out and about there are plenty of things to see and do...
