Winchester Hotel with Great Location

Businessman's hotel with standard accommodations. Location was superb however. Our room had a very nice view of the cathedral. Short walks to everything.

I stayed here and would not do so again. I had the misfortune of being allocated a room that backed onto the service road for the high street shops. Not a problem until the refuse collections started at 0545 ! I also had problems ordering room service - nobody answered the phone. In the end I went down to reception to order. Parking was an extra £12 and they also added a £2 charge for paying by credit card. At £116 per night this hotel is over priced for the quality of the rooms and service. This seems to be the norm in Winchester as are other hotels also equally pricey for what they offer. It must be due to location in the city centre which tourists will find convenient.

Good hotel, great location

The Wessex, along with many other Macdonald hotels, has just been bought by a chain called Mercure.

The hotel is in an excellent location, right in the middle of Winchester and about a minute's walk from the cathedral. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

I stayed in a twin room - not overlooking the cathedral - which was very comfortable. The only (minor) problem with the room was that I had to push the bathroom door very firmly against the door frame to lock it.

I had booked on a B&B rate. The dinner menu didn't look particularly inspiring, but the breakfast was very good. Some of the public areas were rather hot, but the restaurant was air-conditioned and the temperature in my room was fine too.

I would recommend this hotel, particularly for its location.

Okay hotel, great location...boring town

The hotel was in a great location in Winchester. It wasn't a special hotel - just average. The rooms were average, a bit older, poor TV selection, slight smell, with bad bed sheets and blankets (hard and uncomfortable) but very nice pillows. The problem was there wasn't much to do in Winchester past 5 pm. Most stores closed down on 5-5:30 so walking around wasn't interesting. There may be better towns in Hampshire to stay in with more sights or things to do in the evenings.

Good hotel, good location

The outside of the hotel is not particularly attractive and shows its age, and the reception area is a bit dated, but overall the hotel was an excellent place to stay. The staff were all extremly friendly, the room was clean and had a great view of the Cathedral, and a relativly large bathroom. It's located in the centre of town so very convenient.
I don't normally use the restaurant, but I'ld been booked in for dbb - found it to be extremly good; the breakfast was also excellent. Can't think of any thing to fault it on, and would certainly be haapy to stay there again.

Decent enough hotel

Arrived to a friendly greeting from the receptionist. Check in was speedy and efficient.

My room was clean, although the shower and bathroom fittings were looking a little tired.

Beds were comfy, and my room had a great view of the cathedral.

Breakfast was served at the required time in my room, and was edible, if unexciting.

Check out was speedy too.

We had great problems parking upon arrival since the car park was full but managed to solve the problem ourselves by parking at the back of the hotel where there was plenty of space.

Upon arrival at check-in, we were told that dinner was very busy so the only slot they could offer us was at 7.30pm. This was earlier than we would usually eat but we seemed to have no choice so said it was okay.

The room was lovely with a big window and views of the cathedral and grounds. Clean, tidy and well-equipped but the heating was far too high and we boiled even with the window open!

We went down to the restaurant at 7.30pm only to be shuffled around and informed by 4 different people that we 'weren't on the list'. What appeared to be the duty manager implied that we hadn't even made a reservation and was not very forthcoming at all. After some discussion about our conversation at check-in, he agreed to give us a table but by that time we were rather annoyed at the whole situation and his unresponsive nature to the dilemma.

He returned during the first course to tell us that all was okay as we were in fact on his list and he had not realised we were all-inclusive. He did not actually apologise for his error though and his tone of voice just made things worse rather than better!

The meal was good all-in-all but my partner's roast potatoes were very burnt. Wine was good and not too expensive for the hotel.

Although we had been told we had to eat at 7.30pm, there were 3 empty tables throughout the entired meal laid out for 2 people so we are not sure why we couldn't have eaten later as requested?

All-in-all, not what I would expect from a 4-star Macdonald hotel which are usually very good. Winchester is a fantastic place though which made the trip worthwhile.

Family Reunion spoilt

Oh dear!!! Fawlty Towers lives on. My wife and I booked this hotel to meet up with our family for a pre xmas get together. After dinner my wife had a full glass of liquear coffe spilt over her. quite accidently. i summonsed the duty manager who after a lot of prodding offered her £20.00 compensation for a ruined top and jeans. This was turned down. He then said that any more would be deducted from the waiters wages. He was told not be so ridiclous and that I would speak with senior management in the morning.
We all met up for for breakfast at 0930 and by 1100 we still had not received the correct orders, what did arrive was undercooked and totally inedible.
The General Manager agreed that we should receive decent compensation.
All in all an eventful stay

Great Location and Great Views of Cathedral

The location of the Wessex is definitely its biggest plus. We paid slightly more for a Cathedral view room which was spacious with a peaceful outlook overlooking the cathedral (see picture).
As mentioned in previous posts, service was inconsistent - in-room dining was noticeably slow and (on both occasions) our food had practically gone cold by the time it reached us - breakfast was an approximation of what we had ordered.
Reception staff were friendly and efficient. However, it is very odd to charge £2 credit/charge card fee on checkout. It's such a trivial amount that they should surely incorporate it in to the room rate, rather than leaving it as your last interaction with the hotel.
If you can forgive the shortcomings and find a discounted rate, I would still recommend the Wessex due to its location and views from the cathedal side of the hotel.

OK but not great service

The hotel is well located, and the rooms are clean and comfortable. The staff need some serious customer care and service training. Breakfast was appalling - not because it was busy, as we went at a quiet time, the restaurant was unattended when we arrived, and we had to go looking for a member of staff to eventually seat us - which was a 15 minute wait. We were then kept waiting for a further 25 minutes before our order was taken or we were even offered tea/coffee. Again, we had to get up and go and look for a member of staff to bring this to their attention. Breakfast was then a further 20 minutes before it arrived, and the order was incorrect - there were no cruets and no sauces available. Coffee was served - the milk had a fly in it, and there was no sugar to accompany it. There was no attempt made to check customer satisfaction, and the manager who came to take our order lacked serious social skills - because we had complained at the time we had already waited, he stood at least a foot away from us. Overall, this let down the whole stay. Check out took so long because the desk was unattended - a porter even walked behind the desk and didnt even acknowledge us - he just walked off again. Someone eventually came, looked like she had been on a break. OK for an overnight no frills stay, would not recommend it for a special occasion.
