superb all round hotel with great views of the sea, there is loads to do for all ages including: pool table/snooker, good evening entertainment and at dinner the staff are very helpful including a waitor called Kris and out and about at whitby there is plenty of arcades, boat trips, muesems and lots of shops in the town.

My wife and I travelled with three friends, (another couple and a widowed friend). It was our first trip to Whitby. So I can speak of three different rooms provided. The Hotel itself is in need of alot of money spending on it (I think it would be a good idea for Shearings to update the photographs on the website), and has seen better times. The windows in two of the rooms are in a poor state of repair. Our room did not seem to have been cleaned to a very high standed, the carpet was dirty and had not been vacuumed, dirty glasses smeared with toothpaste from a previous customer in the bathroom and even their shower cap left in the shower cubicle! The walls are very thin, and don't bother setting an alarm as the seagulls have found away into the loft space and will wake you with their footsteps running across the ceiling at first light. The food was a pleasent surprise, with a good selection, and the table staff were very attentive and helpful. They worked their socks off as four coach parties were in the hotel at one point. We had a whole day and a half day excursions in with the five day package, and opted for an extra half day one for a price of £7.50 ahead which took us to Gisbrough, a one street "market town" with not very much to do, other than visit the one coffer shop on offer. The driver took us back the scenic route via the coastal road which took in a few hundred yards of the beach at Redcar. Our best day was the the freeday we had to ourselves exploring Whitby.

we visited the royal for 5 days, and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The premier room was fab....spotlessly clean with large four poster bed, which was very comfortable. Staff very hospitable. The only down side for us was the dining room service.....although even this did not spoil our stay. Whitby is a lovely shopping centre.......Happily return

If you are a fan of Heartbeat and the Royal then staying at the Royal Hotel is a treat. I checked into my single room with a seaview and have to say that the room was clean and the service excellent. The choice on the menu in the restuarant, with a good vegetarian option for breakfast and evening meal, was varied and again the service by the waiting staff was first rate. If you are looking for a good hotel offering value for money then the Royal has to be your first choice.

As someone who grew up in Whitby, I always look forward to returning to the beautiful seaside town. I have stop in many hotels in Whitby and this is far the best. It's worth paying the extra for the sea view (is'nt that the point of visiting the sea!!) It's value for money and the meals were excellent with the waitress's very helpful! We stayed as a party of 6 in 3 double rooms with all the rooms clean and plenty of space for all of us to sit round and chat. The entertainment wasn't up my street but my father enjoyed it. Situated in a great position as all areas are in walking distance!! Worth a visit or 2!

Stayed at royal on a mon-fri midweek stay. When we arrived there had been a mix up with the booking and we were put at the back with a view off a brick wall, the reception staff were of hand and no help although it was not our fault. There were handles missing on draws and wardrobe, light bulbs out,but the rooms were clean. The meals were terrible overcooked, or in the case of the rice under cooked!I could not eat them, but the waitress was an angel and was embarrassed with what she had to service. I would not go there agian.

My wife & I have had 2 weekend breaks at the Royal. Enjoyed ourselves on both occassions. Both times had a sea view, worth the extra cost. Food was well cooked & portions were adequate (what do you expect for the price? Cordon bleu! Entertainment was good, bar prices reasonable. Hotel is ideally situated, but walk back from town is uphill all the way.
