Stayed at the Avalon for a 2 night break with my family and 4 yr old boy at the beginning of Aug 2010. Charlie made us all feel so very welcome, especially the little one. He is a most charming host!
The Hotel is situated right on the cliff top with lovely views over the gardens and out to sea. The hotel was spotlessly clean and the rooms were comfortable. I think the place will be beautiful when the renovations are complete.
The breakfast was delicious and I couldn't help but have the full english two mornings in a row, even after feeling so pogged the first morning I said I couldn't possibly have it again (but I managed, just!). Probably shouldn't have had the cereal and fruit first! Charlie really does go out of his way to make every one happy. The selections at breakfast are numerous and Charlie was happy to make any combination we wanted.
What can I say but a lovely hotel and a lovely host. See you next year Charlie!

fantastic hotel,great views,rooms very clean,couldnt do enough 4 u.breakfast fantastic make sure ur hungry.charlie the host is fantastic and will do anything 4 u.will always b booking the avalon when i go 2 whitby.paul&nina.

A very tired hotel

An impersonal hotel where the reception area has very tired decor, threadbare carpets, creaking floorboards and peeling wallpaper do nothing to present a warm welcome. The hotel' has a consistent décor, fixtures and fittings to match the reception with the addition of a mouldy bathroom.

An overpriced facility where the price does not reflect either quality or service, avoid, avoid, avoid.

Breakfast is completely inflexible only served between 8:30 and 9:00 so forget a lie in on Sunday morning.

It is advertised as a hotel but is run as a guest house.

Whitby is lovely, this was our first visit it will not be our last but we will definitely be staying elsewhere.

The Magpie Cafe This restaurant is well worth queueing for (and people do queue every night for a table) The seafood was fantastic. I would love to return to this restaurant
