We stayed for a weekend break and really enjoyed it. The food is excellent and our family room was of a good size , clean and tidy. All the staff are friendly and helpful and gave my husband directions over the phone when he couldn't find the carpark ! Well Done ! We will definately be back !

Normally my wife and I stay in Torquay at self catering. We were badly let down at the 11th hour, and so quickly booked a 4 day break at the Torbay. Best thing that ever happened!! Okay so decorating was under way and the place is old, but with the relaxed and co-operative atmosphere, it was all worth while.Reception staff were always helpful. Being able to access the lounge and our room at any time was so beneficial. I also have to mention two other members of staff. In the restaurant Eva was pleasant, helpful and polite and like all those working with her, worked their socks off at meal times. On her day off another waitress (unfortunately I did not catch her name) was also helpful and polite. The other member was Julie working the bars. She was jovial, pleasant, warm and friendly. The food was excellent, with a varied choice. All in all it has determined our stay in Torquay for the future. No more self catering for us!! It's Torbay Hotel from now on!!!!

After reading some reviews we were pleasantly suprised. We were allocated a room that was not suitable as my wife has a disability scooter but a quick word with the reception staff & we were given a room that was right by the lift. The hotel is a bit dated but a lot of rooms have been recently decorated. The staff are very helpfull. The food was varied & very good. The position of the hotel is very central for the shops, marina & is only a short walk to the Princess Theatre. We would recommend this hotel but it may not be suitable to wheelchair user's unless you can get the room opposite the lift. As there are 4 floor's that means there are only 4 room that are wheel chair friendly.

We went in a group of friends to this hotel. We all really enjoyed ourselves and the food and staff were very good! The hotel does need to be re-decorated in some areas but we had a fantastic time and our waitress Eva was fantastic! We WILL definately go back. Thanks Torbay Hotel!!

stayed at this hotel just before the Easter holidays and throughly enjoyed it. The rooms were very comfortable and clean though i would agree with some of the other reviews there is a musty smell throughout the hotel. The food was very filling and healthy with a good choice on the menu. The staff very efficient but lacked a little warmth in their brisk manner. The hotel itself is in need of some serious re-decorating which i do feel lets this hotel down. The indoor swimming pool which attracted us intially was in serious need of attention. (Venture in at your own peril). On the whole a comfortable hotel just in need of some TLC with an excellent location.

after reading the first review (1 rated)i was really suprised that this person found so many negative comments,we booked this hotel as a last minute thing for easter.what we found was a grand looking old hotel steeped in history with the best view over torbay that you could get. ok some of the decor might need a facelift but the hotel itself was spotless.my wife and i have been on several luxury cruises and i hasten to add that the food in the hotel was on a par if not sometimes better than on the cruise.we liked the relaxed atmosphere, enjoyed the cabaret, the quizzes
and of course the bingo.thank you shearings for a wonderful 4 days,we will return !!!!.

We've had several short breaks at the Torbay Hotel; the most recent being a "Turkey & Tinsel" break in November 2008.
This is a big hotel on four floors, and refurbishment is being carried out.
On a positive note, the food has always been good and the staff generally friendly and helpful. We particularly liked Martha our waitress, and Atlantis. The hotel is very close to the harbour and bus stops are nearby.
Entertainment was good and the hosts Steve and Tamar were very versatile
Now for the minus points. We stayed at the hotel twice last year, and on one occasion, there was a very unpleasant smell in our bathroom, which we reported. The toilet cistern was also very noisy when refilling. On two occasions, the mattress on our bed has been really uncomfortable and we've asked for it to be changed. We have found that any complaints reported in a pleasant and non-aggressive way are usually dealt with promptly. (One man who made a scene because he felt his bed was not made properly, just made himself look silly.)
The bedroom windows could do with a clean and the frames were mouldy because of condensation from the shower. The communal areas were very much in need of redecoration, but this must be very difficult to carry out when the hotel is open all year round.
Car parking for self-drive guests is available in the Terrace car park, on payment of a £5 returnable deposit for the key. However, there is a ten minute walk to this car park, which is on a hill. It may therefore not be suitable for guests with limited mobility

This has got to be the most disgusting hotel I have ever stayed in. Booking made by friend as part of a weekend party group booking. I could not beleive the smell from the bathroom when we got into our room. A few of us asked to be moved, but the other two rooms available were the same. The location must be the only reason why still holding on to a 3 star rating, as the communal areas very dirty and I had to purchase cleaners myself to clean shower which had not been cleaned for some time. Carpets worn to shreds in some places and obvious missing floor boards in some areas under carpets which could be harzardous when walking down corridors. The lift was incredibly slow,(would have been quicker to use stair lift positioned on every level) Room furnishing also very dated and worn, and the refurbished rooms furnished with cheap plastic seats,(assume most of their guest must be incontinent)and bathrooms mouldy. Could not get rid of the smell in our bathroom, even though bleach poured down drains. I would not live in such conditions so do not understand how hotel expects anyone to feel confortable there. I am a well seasoned traveller and have stayed in cheap hostels abroad during my younger days which were cleaner than this. I wonder what a visit from a hotel inspector would result in??

First Time we have ventured on a Shearings Holidays. Choose this hotel as we had heard it was the best of the Shearings in Torquay. On arrival first impressions was of an old hotel in need of some TLC - corridors were grubby, and carpets needs some attention. However bedroom was clean and roomy. Staff were all very polite and friendly, Meals were excellent and waitresses were all pleasant especially Atlantis. Location if excellent, entertainment was surprisingly good. With a little money spent on this hotels appearance could be a first class hotel. In all value for money would return again.
