Very good value for money for what we paid. Meals were exelent and great selection. Staff were fantastic really polite and helpful , the head waitress Janice just couldnt do enough for myself ,partner my elderly parents and other members of our party nothing seemed too much of a trouble for her, a big thankyou to her and all stall for making our stay memorable.

it may be old, the floor boards might squeek and the exterior old and dirty, and the hotel may be an intricate maze to find your room - but that was part of the fun! highly exceptional staff in the dining room and bar. entertainment was not our cup of tea (not our type of thing) but it was so easy to get out and walk around and see the delights of torquay! no, it was not the best looking hotel out there, but the experience it brought was priceless. our waitress was so chatty, always efficient and helped in what ever way posibble. she really took an interest in the things we were doing during ou stay! in fact most staff were lovely in asking about our stay and our tours outside the hotel - the recptionist came to know all of our faces and room numbers through out the week.
there were some very negative people on the tour, saying their rooms were to small or unclean. we never had a problem, and if we would have, we would have said something to managment... all u can do is ask at the end of the day! im quite sure they would do everything to keep u as happy as we were!
we will be goin bak again! and treat others how they should be treated - thats wot i told the other guests!

We were very happy with everything. We had read very bad reports so went with a very open mind, we had a very nice room with 3 beds even though there were only the 2 of us. The food was fine and the staff were very kind and friendly. The entertainment was very good so no complaints at all. We would definitley go back to the Tor Park.

We went to the Tor Park Hotel with an open mind having been to a number of Shearings Hotels before and enjoyed ourselves throughly. Even with a free bar, this one was an experience not to be repeated. Our room was not vaccumed throughout the stay, and as said before the rooms consisted of a maze of corridors - the hotel was dangerous and not fit for elderly people to stay in and how if complied with the Health and Safety regulations is a mystery. The worst was the attitude of the staff especially one english woman in the restaurant. She complained about staff shortages (even though the hotel was 1/2 full) but was making work for her staff by getting the waiting staff to serve breakfast to each table with a separate journey for coffee, fruit juice/prunes and then breakfast toast (making 3/4 journeys) to each table. When my husband and myself ordered prunes and grapefruit together and my husband requested no beans with his breakfast the waitress stated that she hoped that all the guests weren't as awkward as us, and was heard to say "bloody hell" as she entered the kitchen. Is this acceptable behaviour for Shearings staff towards their guests?
If I managed the restaurant and was short staffed, I would provide the guests as most other hotels do with self-service for all except cooked breakfast thus opening up staff time. Isn't the cost of a few prunes and grapefruit and an urn for tea/coffee less cost than a free bar??? The evening meal was acceptable, though no water was supplied at the table. It seems to me that the attraction of a free bar was at the expense of other things - like a contended/happy staff and guests. No wonder there are staff problems I wouldn't want to work there. The rudeness of some of the staff made me feel that John Cleese stayed at the wrong hotel (or perhaps the staff have now moved to the Tor Park Hotel). Shearings need to either sort out the management or close it down and start again. Not up to the usual Shearings standard.

Tired Tor Park

The Tor Park is a very tired hotel that needs a complete re-vamp - and very soon! The hotel is situated approx 3/4miles uphill from Torquay centre in a quiet residential area. Overall, we enjoyed our stay - however, read on as you might not be able to turn a blind eye on the following.
Firstly; some positive aspects: The staff were very helpful, but seemed to be fighting against a dated and very tired hotel, often with apparent staff shortages. The meals in general were better than expected, but the service staff seemed to be suffering staff shortages and did well to remain cheerful and friendly. As a consequence, sometimes service could be very slow. The free bar and entertainment was better than expected. Cheerful friendly bar staff and a couple of good comedians/singers that worked the crowd well throughout the weeks stay.
The actual hotel rooms varied from bad to acceptable to reasonable. Our room (47) was at the end of this passage and was so small you had to move a chair to walk round. The shower was a squeeze, and the sink unit had no adjacent shelving. (Apparently, we were lucky) The Tor Park at sometime has expanded to incorporate another nearby (presumably) hotel and this annexe consists of a weird complex passageway that runs up and downstairs then up and down again, but is still on the same level as the main hotel building???? This part of the hotel seems to have been 'patched' on to the Tor Park. I don't know how this part of the hotel meets fire reg's as in an emergency, getting out would be a complete nightmare, even for a fit and young person.
The hotel has a patio area to the rear which quite frankly, is nothing but an accident waiting to happen. This is a built up area with an approx. 3 mtr drop to ground level. The handrail was not compliant with regulations and a child could quite easily slip through. The chairs provided were amazingly old, of cast iron and wood latt construction but were well worn and very loose, wobbly and downright dangerous. Of the existing lighting to the patio - 80% were out of use and in general ,along with the patio furniture, should be condemned. Tops on working lights were loose giving access to LIVE wiring for inquisitive hands. A fire door from the dining room to this area was out of service during our stay?????
No consideration was given to Smokers at all. If it is raining, you will get wet to indulge your habit as there is absolutely NO shelter whatsoever.
In conclusion, staff aside, how this Shearing's hotel meets the many complex current regulations is amazing. But somehow, it obviously does. Perhaps - with a short sighted inspector.

I cant believe I paid to stay here. They should of paid me! Firstly, my room - it was dark, smelled of smoke, the bed and shower were broken and my linen wasn't changed for my whole stay, which was five days. I reported this and nothing happened. The whole place is worn and dirty. Also, when I complained the staff became sour and very unhelpful to me.

My room was dirty, the linens didn't get changed all week and my bed was broken. I reported this to several members of the staff, including management and nothing happened. The staff are miserable and unwilling to help. Also my food was awful and it took a long time to even be served. I would never go back - it was the worst place I ever stayed!!!

Managers although efficient, not dressed as senior management. Bedroom spotless, could do with new curtains and attention to radiators. When you turn room on the bathroom one does not work, reported but no avail.Breakfast service very slow service at evening much better. The meals were very good & varied, the free bar was also excellent. The staff were very friendly,
courteous & helpful. Would go back to the Tor Park and recommend it to friends & family.
