s better and betterfrom merboydino
Clearly they have invested a lot of money in the hotel, the standard of the rooms are 5* as is the friendly service.
I am recognised when I return and the proprietors can never do enough to help make the stay more enjoyable, restaurant bookings, late check ins (11.30pm) or early breakfast.
One other point, the breakfasts are amazing, hearty, high quality and tasty.
A truly memorable experience every time.
A lovely stayfrom franandray
On the plus side, the room was VERY clean - faultlessly so. Although it was small in size, it was perfectly acceptable and the en suite bathroom was immaculate too. The staff are very friendly, obliging and offer a personal touch to your stay.
The negatives however include the fact that they advertise free wireless internet is provided in all rooms. This isn't actually true. It's free wi-fi in the rooms that the signal can stretch to - and this is not all the rooms. If you're stuck at the back, you'll get no signal at all and although they'll happily let you sit in reception and check your mail, that's not free wi-fi in your room. This feature was one of the key reasons I chose that hotel so the lack of it was quite a let down.
Also, unless you are an early bird, you can forget breakfast. Service ends well before 10am at weekends (even Sundays) and even earlier during the week. There's also no scope to have breakfast brought to your room.
So all in all, it's a perfectly ok place to stay, as bed and breakfasts go, but if you want a proper hotel experience, you should keep looking.
We are five star guest accommodation which means that we are some where between a hotel and a guest house.
I cannot understand how on earth the guest thought we were a five star hotel from anything that we have published. Unfortuntately, the attempts by VIsit Britain to clarify the definition of hotel have not been successful and some guests do not still appear to have been made aware of the different categories that now exist.
As far as the WIFI is concerned, we have nver stated that it is available in all rooms. We have an old building with cobb stone walls and so the signal does not always reach the furthest points of the building. However, there are many rooms it does reach and upon booking if guests state that this is important to them we will do our best to allocate an appropriate room. It should be noted that laptop receivers vary in strength and so some can piick up a signal in one place while others cannot. The guest also failed to mention that unlike the big chains who charge upwards of £20 for the use of WIFI our service is completely FREE.
At no point during their stay did this guest make clear their unhappiness about any of these issues. Although it is always useful to read guest comments it is also frustrating when it is not possible to respond to them at a point when things may be resolved. We will move heaven and earth to keep our guests happy.
We are five star guest accommodation which puts us between a hotel and guest house. The hospitality industry has tried to tighten up definitions of hotel to avoid such misunderstandings. That they still exist is as a result of Vist Britain's failure to inform the public of the different types of accommodation that are now offered. At no point did this guest make known any of their dissatisfactionsnor did they challenge us over our apparent rating. Had they done so, we would have moved heaven and earth to have ensure that any grievances were resolved.
The WIFI issue is also a little more complicated. We do not claim that the WIFI is available in all rooms and never have. Our building is oid and has thick cobb stone walls which means that the signal does not reach all bedrooms. However, it does reach a fair number although it has become apparent that not all laptops have receivers of the same strength. At the time of booking if any guest has particular need of a WIFI signal we will always try and ensure that they are allocated a room with a particularly strong signal. Finally, the guest failed to mention that unlike large chains who charge £20 or more for WFI access, our WIFI access is completely FREE.
A nice little place, but needs some workfrom Angebange
We had booked one of the standard rooms. The room and the bathroom were small, however the room was decorated in an old fashioned quirky way which I liked, and both were very clean. There was a problem with the entry door to the room and the bathroom door however, as they do not fit properly in their frames and thus it was a struggle (not to mention noisy) to open and close them, no sneaking off to the loo quietly in the middle of the night!
The breakfast was included in the price. This was great.... when you finally got it. The service for breakfast was so bad it was comical. The same staff also perform the housekeeping duties, and on one evening we returned to find they had neglected to re-lock the door to our room after they had been in that morning.
The advertised wi-fi is also not available in the rooms or the public areas and although the management were nice enough to let us use their office, this should be fixed or not advertised as being wireless.
The location of the hotel is good. A quick walk down the hill to the town centre of Torquay.
All in all I think the management are doing a great job in creating a lovely hotel, however a bit of maintenance and further training of their staff wouldn't go astray.
In relation to the doors. We only have ten bedrooms and as owners we are constantly vigilant in relation to maintenance issues. None of the doors are a problem anywhere.
As far as wifi is concerned, we advertise wifi but do not state that it is available in all rooms. Once again the guest does not mention that this is free. The guest did not use our office. At no point has any guest used our office.
Once again at no point were any of these issues raised with us during the stay. As owners, we want our establishment to be the very best it can be and we want our guests to leave feeling satisfied. It seems poinless to critise things after you have gone rather than raise them at the time to see if they can be resolved. The reviewer makes it clear that as hosts we were friendly and approachable so it is surprising that they chose to say nothing to us.
Should be 5 starfrom AlexEfs
The only negative is the slight bit of noise from the road outside. There are ample parking facilities off-road as well.
Without wanting to go on too long, we would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and will definitely stay there again if we are ever in the area.
Great Hotelfrom nickh81
Breakfast was also great, with a good choice and even a vegetarian option without having to make a special request. The staff were friendly and helpful. We will be staying here again and would recommend to anyone.
Great Hotel Good Location Very Friendlyfrom fullyladen
Hotel is located about 5 mins walk (uphill) from the town centre and could be a bit of a problem for less able customers.
The owner was very friendly and made us all (5 people) very welcome. The hotel entrance is a bit dated but ok.
The rooms were very clean and had recently been refurbished so the furniture including beds were all fairly new. Rooms are nicely decorated. We had a shower room ensuite the shower did not have enough power but was adequate.
Slept like a log on the big bed but this may be due to not getting in it until 1.30 in the morning.
Breakfast was excellent and very nicely cooked and presented.
All in all a great find and well worth another visit.

great last minute choice!from mogstown
The hotel has 12 rooms, and our room didn't have a view (which we knew when we booked) but in chilly and rainy December, this was not a problem!
Car park had plenty of space and on check-in the gentleman was ready with a map of Torquay and highlighted several restaurants where we might like to eat that evening.
Our room was spotlessly clean and a lot of thought has gone into the decor and finishing touches. No bath in the bathroom, but excellent shower. The bed was very comfy, and one of the better ones I have slept in away from home.
The stroll down the hill to the harbourside takes less than 5 minutes, and the stroll back up the hill, slightly more than 5 minutes! However, the hill is far from the steepest in the area, we found those the next morning when we did the cliff walk.
The breakfast was lovely, and upon hearing that I was a vegetarian, offered vegetarian sausages as an alternative. In my experience, this seldom happens in the 'big chains' of hotels, so to happen in an independently run hotel was a pleasant surprise.
The service at The Somerville was excellent, and should we visit Torquay again, we will definitely stay again.
