Beware Of The Pasta Bake

I am a strong believer that you can't please some people, but i struggle to see how this hotel/boarding house pleases anyone. The county hotel lacks basic qualities that have led me to query the Torquay area. Food wise, the chef was a dab hand with the freezer but struggled to use the oven and microwave which meant the majority of food was predominantly frozen. The portions were ridiculously small and poorly presented, with the starter of melon being inadequate. The salad appeared to be straight out of the rabbit cage and the potatoes seemed to be fork resistant. The worst of the meals came in the form of a freezer fresh packet pasta bake which was slapped on the plate without care or attention, the cottage pie and desserts were much the same, with the jam roly poly being more roly poly that jam. Location wise the hotel was well situated being just a short walk from the coast, but the use of "hotel" seems to be thrown about. In conclusion, the rooms were of a poor standard, the meals were even worse, and the whole stay reminded me of another Torquay hotel i know, owned by a Mr Basil Fawlty.

this was the second time we have stayed at the county (through choice). we found it was good value. the ritz it's not but what do people expect for prices paid. the food was average. you cant please everyone i know but some guests wouldnt have been happy anywhere and couldnt wait to get their complaints sent off hoping for compensation.

Just back after five days stay, got to say excellent value for money, rooms very clean and warm, all the meals were prompt and delicious and plentiful and good choice, the staff work hard to make stay enjoyable, good bar selection, great entertainment. the plus is they have a two persons lift. we will be going back very soon.

Unhappy Travellers

After our stay at the County hotel in Torquay we were very unhappy. We dont normally complain but on this occasion things were just not as they should be at a hotel. Our coach party were not made to feel at all welcome. The hotel seemed to be more like a social club for the staff and their children and friends. Our room was in need of some tlc, and when we reported problems, nothing was done. It was impossible to find anybody who seemed to be in control of running the place as a hotel should operate, a total lack of management presence. Sometimes it seemed like there were no staff in the building. Entertainment was what you expect at a coaching hotel, and food was average. But the attempts of the youngsters who were trying (very badly) to run the place showed that they lacked guidance or experience and just couldnt cope with the most basic things. I am afraid nobody on our coach would like to return, and we shall be making complaints to National Holidays accordingly. A thoroughly poor show.

I wouldn't give the food to a dying dog! The choice was terrible. DO NOT TRY THE COTTAGE PIE!!! The staff and management couldn't cope with the slightest requirement. The bathrooms were small and the showers dirty. The worst hotel we've ever stayed in.
