bit of a let down

our recent stay at this hotel was not what we anticipated, it looked drab and uninviting on arrival, especially when the hotels either side all had nice flower baskets hanging out, and looked more appelling. Inside was very dated, decor not upto scratch. Our room was on the top floor, more like in the attic, we had to carry our suitcases up 3 flights of steep stairs, lift only held 2 plus suitcase if that (and thats if you could get in it)! Our room was not very desirable, old fashioned, tatty, wallpaper was peeling away above bed, bathroom floor was'nt very clean, kettle was gruby, only one electric point in room, none above were the dressing table/mirror was, bed was ok more than I could say for the pillows, flat as pancakes. Very, very noisy main road outside, even with the window closed, the noise was constant as hotel is situated right on crossroads.Food was ok nothing special, not much choice and you don't get much, full-english breakfast consisted of 1 slice of bacon, 1 tomato, 1 fried egg, if it had'nt been for the lady sitting next to me at breakfast who did'nt eat much, and gave the rest of hers to my partner he may have starved to death! if they ran out of something you'd had it, plus you had to order your main meal for that evening at breakfast! new one on me, how do you know what your going to fancy for tea first thing in the morning!, noticed they don't clean the table cloths very often, a glass of larger was acciedently knocked over at the start of the week leaving a stain on cloth which was still there at the end of week, I can't comment on the bar as we preffered to go out, more atmosphere. On a plus side the young girls who were waiting staff were friendly and helpful. But all in all would not return or recommend this establishment!

Having done several weekend breaks with National Holidays and found the hotels where good, we thought we would try a week at this hotel. What a mistake! The room hadn't been cleaned the only day the bed was made the door was left open whilst we where on a day trip. The evening meal had to be ordered at breakfast time with a minimum choice of meals. Veg over cooked and soggy. Only good thing friendly girls waiting on tables.

Dated old not up to standard, a lot of out side noise as situated on a main road with the traffic lights right out side. The all inclusive bar was not up to standard the as there was lack of diffrent drinks.
Breakfast was ok but if you are unlucky enough to be staying on a weekend do not have the roast dinner terrible. Beds uncomfortable your better of taking your own pillows, would never return.
Enjoyed our stay

Our recent stay at this hotel was generally very enjoyable, we found our room to have everything we needed and it was cleaned daily to a good standard. We liked the choice of food and the staff were nice. Bar was open until late each night, good selection of drinks and good prices, definately one of the better Torquay hotels we have stayed in over the past 5 years and we would go there again, John + Anne
Dissappointed to say the least!

1. Although our deposit had been paid - we were not expected! 2 adults and 2 children.
2. Cleaner left room door open while we were off site swimming!
3. Water glass at evening meal had lipstick on it! I asked for it to be changed because of this and never got a clean one in return!!
4.Hotel would not take payment by card only cash! and it took 2 days of reminders before we got our receipt! No date - no names - wrong proprieter on letter-head!
5. Breakfast and eve meal service was very quick - however no menu was provided giving breakdown of what was on offer.
6. We were very dissapointed with quality of food. It had been cooked and left then obviously reheated. We only continued to eat at the hotel because it had already been paid for.
7. Phone in room was very dusty,t-pot too and the cups we chose to wash in boiling water as they showed signs of remains of tea/coffee.
8. Other visitors commented on food quality too.
9. We have visited the county hotel for numerous years - seeing at least three proprietors - all of which provided extremely high quality service and food.
10. Young serving staff were very pleasant therefore bringing our review score up to 3.

My wife and I (50ish) and our son (30ish) have just arrived back from an Easter Break staying at the County Hotel, Torquay. This was a four day National Holiday bus trip, so the company use this hotel often. I did read the reviews before I went and they did not sound good. I am happy to say we all had an excellent time and did not want to come home.

The hotel is a beautiful Victorian type building with the interior and deco to match. It was very clean and looks newly decorated, inside and out. It also is fitted with a lift.

It is run by Franky and June and nothing was too much trouble for them. All the Staff were pleasant and friendly. We took a room for three it was spacious including the bathroom with plenty of hot water. We had a double and a single bed. Not a double with Z bed thrown in. There was Tea/coffee available, flat screen TV with free view and a hairdryer in the room. There was also ample storage space and the domestic came in everyday.

Our deal included a full English breakfast and a three course evening meal, for each course there were three choices. We enjoyed all our meals. For the three nights free entertainment was laid on and the drinks were the same price or slightly cheaper than you found in the local pubs. The bar was fully stocked and with branded names of spirits no tins in sight. As I said the staff were friendly they also made use of the bar.

Torquay is known as the English Riviera I am not surprised the sun shone everyday with not a cloud in the sky. Some of our fellow trippers explored the Torquay nightlife and were not disappointed, but they too ended back up at the hotel to finish the night off.

So to conclude we found the hotel a very pleasant place to eat and stay. We are returning sometime this year but would like to stay longer.

Hotel was clean, Staff were pleasent.
meals were plain but well cooked, decent portions.
Lift was out of order, dining room is downstairs which was inconvient without the lift, due to disability.
Bar only served cans of beer, choice of 1 beer or 1 larger hard lines if you dont drink that brand.
Main issue, only one toilet for public use downstairs outside of bar area, male and female, we had to keep going to our room to use toilet, not much fun while you are drinking.
would not return to this hotel.
clean rooms nice food good staff
