Historical Traveller Reviews of Charterhouse Hotel
Home from Home
We have stayed at the charterhouse several times now over the last two years, Our family mainly live in Paignton / Torquay and as a result have seen many guesthouses and hotels over the years, the charterhouse does put most to shame! It does feel like we have become extended family to Marion and Les.
The charterhouse is basically our prefered choice of accommodation when visiting, it is very clean and you will be looked after to the highest standard and the breadfast is fantastic.

Relaxing Business Trip
I had to undertake a fortnight's business trip in the Torbay district and, overall, wanted somewhere comfortable for my extended stay.
My other requirements were - a base to work from at the weekend, within walking distance of the shops and sea shore.
I was not disappointed - large double room with bay window and garden views, free high speed wifi internet access, comfortable lounge with Sky TV, home cooking and very generous hosts.
I will not hesitiate to stay at this home from home on the south coast.
Great potential and peace and quiet
After being disappointed by other accommodation around this area it was a pleasure to arrive at the Charterhouse. This beautiful detached Villa is located in a superbly quiet off road position on Cockington Lane. It is set in its own gardens and has its own spacious car park. From the minute you arrive to the minute you leave NOTHING was too much trouble for the owner Marion - genuine hospitality at its best, not just going through the motions. One refreshing thing was not being pounced upon for immediate payment once you had set foot in the door (unlike many other establishments).
The rooms were spacious with lovely views of the sea and gardens and we can definitely say this hotel was quiet. Our en suite was spacious, clean and the separate bath and shower was a luxury. Although Marion has owned the hotel for only a short period she has made a really positive impact on this property with quality refurbishments continually taking place. The residents' lounge was warm and comfortable with a lovely window seat - total relaxation. There was an excellent choice at breakfast, if you have a big appetite this will challenge even you! Marion was extremely knowledgeable about the area, recommending places to visit and eat (Cockington Village is a must if you want to get away from it all). When we return to Torquay we will head for this hotel. We wish Marion and her husband all the best with this business and many more satisfied customers.
still as good on 2nd stay this year
Always a warm welcome we have stayed twice this year, home from home and nothing too much trouble. Les and Marion look after all their guests wonderfully. The hotel is spotless and the food 1st class. Good location for any time of the year. Highly recomended.
Having just come back from a couple of nights stay at the Charterhouse Hotel I am glad to be able to let others know what a great stay my partner and I had.
Position was absolutely perfect right next to the beautiful Cockington Park and village and also only a few minutes walk to the beach and town centre.
The relatively new owners, Les and Marion, made us feel exstremely welcome and the accomodation was very pleasant and sporlessly clean. Breakfast was a treat and we will most definitely be back.
Thanks Les & Marion.
After endless last minute searching for somewhere to stay for Bank Holiday, the Charterhouse Hotel were so accommodating and friendly. After a welcoming pot of tea on arrival, the hotel was lovely and Torquay turned out to be much more than expected!
Breakfast was fantastic!
Thank you so much to the Charterhouse Hotel and I am sure we will be back again soon, dog and all!
Thank you again,

This hotel was a very pleasant surprise. We booked our stay here, because of the recommendation of a friend, who knew the owners but had never seen the hotel. Having now met the owners, it is very understandable why you could recommend the hotel without seeing it. The hotel is run by Marion and Les Ward, who are, without a doubt, the most remarkable people I've ever met. They exude energy, enthusiasm and warm hospitality! Marion has poured all her energy (which seems to be limitless) into running the best hotel possible. In itself, The Charterhouse is a charming Edwardian building, very solidly built. We (my husband, mother, 11 yr old step son and 2 yr old son) stayed in a family suit (2 linked rooms with separate en-suites) and the walls were so sturdy, that even within the suite, noise did not travel. The hotel is on lovely grounds (as can be seen in the attached picture), which have a very tropical feel. There is a lovely lawn that our children played on, a quiet patio (more quiet now that our children are no longer there) and a sparkly clean outdoor pool. The rooms and the entire house are immaculately clean, but the biggest asset the hotel has is the Ward family. Breakfast was a spectacular daily event (not just a meal), anything you could hope for was there for the taking, all of superb quality. The Ward's local knowledge of the area would be outstanding for life-long Torquay residents, but considering that they have only lived in the area for ~10 months, it is unbelievable for it seems to be limitless in both its depth and breadth. The hotel is well suited for quick access to beaches, various tourist attractions in the area, Torquay shopping and restaurants and the most picturesque village of Cockington (to which there is a lovely nature walk, almost directly from the hotel). Anyone travelling to this area if the country could not do better than a stay at the Charterhouse Hotel!
made most welcome
My mother and I arrived at the Charterhouse Hotel full of the usual apprehension when staying somewhere new. We needn't have worried. We were greeted by Marion (the owner) and any reservations we had disappeared. The hotel was very clean and well kept. It was neat and tidy but homely. Nothing was too much trouble for Marion and her family, their enthusiasm and friendly attitude shone through. In the morning there was a choice of toast, cereals and/or a full English breakfast with tea/coffee and fruit juice. The breakfast was well presented and well cooked and set us up for the day. We would have no hesitation in staying here again.. in fact we look forward to it.
Home from Home
I have stayed several times at the Charterhouseand have always found the hospitality of Alisonand Jack the proprietors to be first class. The standard of home cooked food is excellent and a complimentary glass of wine at dinner is very welcome. The hotel is situated in beautiful landscaped gardens, is a short walk to the sea and the picturesque village of Cockington .
Apart from home the only place I would return to willingly

Our first visit to Torquay and what a lovely surprise. The weather was wonderful, Torbay was great with so much to see and do that we simply did not have enough time in a week to do it all - but the best thing of all was The Charterhouse.A small hotel with lovely large garden and open air swimming pool heated to 83 degrees. The owners, staff and other guests were great, we haven't laughed so much in ages and met some good friends. Some of the guests had been coming for years and made a point of booking for the following year before they left for home. Our room was large and airy with a really comfortable bed and nice hot shower. Although our room didn't have sea views (views across gardens towards Cockington Valley Country Park -which is worth a visit in itself), we understand there are rooms with sea views, but these get booked up really quickly. The evening meal was the highlight of our days, with excellent home cooking, really nice and fresh vegetables, choice of menu and the fabulous sweet trolley, plus, if you still had enough room, cheese & biscuits, coffee or tea and even a complimentary glass of wine.We didn't book for next year while we were there, but have since booked for the same week in 2004 so that we can meet up with old friends. We would highly recommend Charterhouse and the owners Jack & Alison, to anyone visiting this area.
Top Local Tips for Torquay
Not the nicest of resorts.
If you like a typical english beach resort then this is the place for you. It is a busy town centre that has nothing of the quaint devonshire feel about it.
Grub near Torquay?
The Hare and Hounds is on the A380 just outside Torquay and they do a fantastic carvery ... excellent choice of food, wonderful pub and reasonable too!
Take a lot of pound coins, the traffic wardens are all over the place and issuing tickets as fast as they can! We did see a sign regarding a weeks parking ticket in Torbay and we think that might be a good idea for next time. No free parking anywhere!!!
