Historical Traveller Reviews of Best Western Hotel Gleneagles
The staff were apologetic and friendly, blaming the electronic bookings process for our predicament. They did their best to find us better rooms, but I am afraid a modern hotel should not offer rooms which fall below certain standards.
The first room we had on the ground floor had old cleaning materials left in it and was very obviously damp. View: car park. In fact, I think the car parked right up to the window was a Ford Mondeo.
The second room had a bed with a completely destroyed mattress in it, but much worse was the noise from the rest of the hotel. There is no soundprooofing at all, so we did not sleep. The creaking hallway was comical. Nothing could be less well built than this hotel. View: car park, but we could see more cars this time. Bit more interesting.
Finally, we made it into the promised room on the last night. The view was actually excellent. I really liked the dirty wine glass left in the cupboard - a nice touch.
This is the one hotel that should really know better than to do this to its customers. Be warned.
It would be good to see the bedrooms of the same standard as the ground floor, however, our bedroom was comfortable and had lovely views. (We paid extra for a sea view room).
The only criticsm I have is that the floorboards in the bedrooms and the corridors were very creaky and the walls quite thin.
We will definately go back to Hotel Gleneagles in the future.
Loved everything about it.from currypowder
Whilst being a little way out from the centre of Torquay, it is very relaxing & I would recommend it.
A great stay marred by a few minor issuesfrom hmonster
Into the room, seaview with balcony, large amount of space, great area for clothes, large bed, (could do with new mattress) they were a bit of a problem with my girlfriend who has a worse back than when she went.
The room is well set out, nice bathroom, maybe a need for updating, but thats my own opinion, everywhere clean and tidy. Faded signs in the bathroom a worry, for example a warning about the fact the hot water is very hot but the taps not marked.
The other major thing is the floorboards, these are a major problem everywhere. I would have thought when they redid the decor in the room which is recent they could have stuck some nails in as when anyone walks anywhere in the room or corridor you know about it.
The bar is as per usual expensive, would have spent more time there but it was too pricey, went to local Coop and left it on the balcony to chill, breakfast was nice, good selection, and good service, but would have been nice to leave setting for dinner until after breakfast had finished.
All in all, a nice stay, shame about the floorboards and beds, otherwise a great stay. i booked throught a company on the website as it was a lot cheaper than booking through the hotel. I really think an extra £10 per person per night for a sea view is too expensive, nice as it was.
Just a small note about the staff, this hotel is the main reason that fawlty towers was made, i just think they have hired some of there staff for there "querkyness" just to play up to the tv series.
But i must admit there service was second to non. A great stay marred by a few minor issues
Best Party Ever!from millieg1968
We stayed overnight and had a really nice room with a great view and in the morning the coffee hit the right spot with my hangover!

Car park: The car park was tiny and there were no spaces, so we had to leave the car out on the street, which worried me quite a lot.
Check in: Check in was okay if not a little strained.
Room & Reception: Once in the room, there was barely enough room to get round to the other side of the bed. The 'sea view' of a wall was lovely and the bathroom only had a shower. Now for medical reasons I require a bath. On telling reception this they offered us the 'only' room in the hotel left with a bath which was a twin. On arriving in the second room (Pink) the first thing we noticed was that it was freezing cold! The sheets on the twin beds were not made and the room was very poorly decorated. The bookings forms for the gentleman who stayed there before us were still in the room. The bathroom door only just slid across enough for a person to squeeze past and the was basin was in the bedroom. This was obviously the dingy part of the hotel that was hidden away for the more unfortunate guests! But we were warned and it was our choice to be there through having to have a bath.
Food: We had dinner on the first night. Not very nice at all. My partner could not chew the sirloin meat and I barely at any of my order. Hideously expensive for this food. Breakfast was small but okay.
Guest Areas: The guest areas were absolutely immaculate and beautifully decorated. Stunning. Although we used the dining area for 2 breakfasts and a dinner on the first night. We honestly felt that you are eating on the person next to you's lap. This was strange as they squished you in to tiny gaps with about 2cm between tables while there were many nice tables spare. It seems that the guests have to suffer to save the staff having to do their job.
The walk down the back garden to the small cove is tiring but well worth doing.
On leaving we filled in the guest questionnaire, but heard nothing back.
I had really hoped it would be better.
Relaxing half term breakfrom Saffron8
The hotel's situation is lovely overlooking Anstey's Cove and for families near many attractions.
Our room had a lovely sea view and the hotel was friendly yet offered five star service. I understand much of the hotel has undergone refurbishment and it is truly beautiful. All I can say is 1st class value for money. Wonderful!
What a Disappointmentfrom Linda666
The breakfast was very basic, and would have been improved if the toast had been make from better bread, perhaps have yogurts and croisants on offer too. Also fresh coffee, not the bottom of coffee pot (served by waiter with no personality or understanding of english) which was warm and strong, and no offer of top up. For a relaxing break I would not recommend.

Minus points: Arrived on a Saturday for summer holiday break to find a wedding party had taken over all public rooms. Guests had nowhere to sit at night as bars, disco and wedding guests took priority. No chance of a quiet drink. Swimming Pool has a hosepipe and cleaner head constantly swirling around it all day like a snake which obsructs swimmers. Restaurant food very poor. Did not like it when Restaurant staff doubled up as pool attendents and collected used towels from sunbeds and patio at night and paraded through restaurant with dirty towels while guests were still eating. Then returned serving food. Have stayed at Gleneagles years ago but will not be a returning again.
