Historical Traveller Reviews of Peckforton Castle Hotel

from Irishkisser
We first caught site of the Castle travelling South near to Beeston Castle; it was high up on a hill among the trees and looking very impressive. The castle is signposted but keep a sharp lookout for the signs.

The outer gatehouse is a highlight in itself and must be about a mile from the inner gatehouse uphill through the trees. You can drive through the inner gate to the Castle Hotel but this is for drop off only, the car park being outside the castle walls - mind and grab an umbrella at the door if it's raining for the walk back.

Although the castle is a 19th century replica of a mediaeval castle it is very well done; the atmosphere is good, old rustic yet modern facilities.

The room that we had was ample although lacking one or two amenities such as luggage holder and every woman's necessity; a hairdryer! I'm sure one could have been requested but a bit late if you are in a rush and not realising in advance. The room does come wirh a wall mounted flat screen TV and tea/coffee tray (but no mini bar). A word of warning is the squeaky floor boards in room and the corridor; just make sure you are last to bed if a light sleeper as you will hear everyone return!

Be prepared to carry your luggage up a maze of steps and corridors to your room although again i'm sure assistance would be made available if requested.

The cellar wine bar is very atmospheric with vaulted ceiling and candles everywhere setting the mood. Don't be put off by the "wine cellar" title as it has draught lager, beer (keg) and guinness.

We booked the restaurant on arrival and thought it well worth the money. The choice was limited but varied enough with a red or white meat, a fish and vegetarian dish on offer. The food was fresh and service excellent, everything we requested was provided with a smile and nothing was a problem.
There was also a lounge menu if you preferred not to eat in the restaurant.

Overall I would recommend a stay in this hotel, even just for the uniqueness you would not be disappointed. The staff are excellent making your stay special. The only real minus point is those sqeaking floor boards....!!

Took my girlfriend her and she loved it, the building is beautiful and very well restored, will definatley come back and we are considering getting married here, only down side was the bathroom was very small and I thought the resturant and bar was a little overpriced, other than that this is one of the best places i have ever stayed, although i paid £85 through I would have thought i had good value even if i spent the full £120

Excellent!!! Fairytale castle!!

This castle is truly wonderful!! As you drive upto it and enter through the castle itself into the gorgeous grounds with the most fantastic towering tree you are amazed by the fact this is a hotel and not a tourist attraction. The rooms are lovely also. Our room was in a turret. It had plasma tv , drink making facilities and a huge bed!! Also rolltop bath in the bathroom and seperate power shower were a bonus too! As you walk through the castle it is so authentic as they havnt tried to make it too much like a hotel..just added the odd fireplace and sofa to make it more cozy. I love this hotel and would definately return. They do fabulous weddings too!!

What a beautiful place!!!

I booked the hotel, with proposing to my girlfriend in mind. After booking the hotel i stumbled upon a review site which didn't paint a very nice picture.

The person who wrote the review must of been an idiot!!!

Peckforton is the perfect place for a romantic break away. The setting is beautiful and the staff very very helpful. The Cellar Bar in the evening is the perfect place for a quiet drink and the local area has so much to do.

We will certainly being going back to celebrate the anniversary of our engagement

I GOT MARRIED HERE RECENTLY( 07.)it is dark at night but that just adds to atmosphere .however we were served mouldy bread and charged £7 for a glass of wine. be sure to check your change .beautiful venue but no hospitality FEELS RATHER LIKE A DAY VISIT TO A HISTORIC BUILDING,LOOK BUT DONT TOUCH AND ITS NOT QUITE RIGHT TO STAY OVER.IT it is a stunning location and would go back if customer service seriously improves.staff change on each visit.we are currently looking for new venue to renew vows .i can reccomend crabwall manor they know how to treat you or try the witchery in edinburgh its amazing as is their customer service..

Sprayed with sewage and was made to feel like a vandal!

Where do I start? Intially the castle was lovely when we arrived although we picked the worst weekend as it rained for 3 days.

A wedding was going on when we arrived which was fine until the disco started up - our room 308 was directly above it. We could hardly hear the TV over Black Lace. I tried to call Reception to enquire about when it might stop but the telephone wasn't working. Went down to Reception (miles away!) and they did apologise but said they were full so couldn't change our room and that the disco was going on until 12.30. They offered to turn it down a little (which didn't happen) and offered to reduce our bill slightly for the inconvenience (we were staying 3 nights). THis all seemed well and good and we were happy until the last day of our stay.

As it's a remote place, they have a pumping system on their toilets and showers to remove the waste water. We have experienced this in the past and has not been a problem unless you put something down the toilet which you shouldn't.

On our last morning, I have a shower after my partner has had one and I notice the pumping system seems to be making more noise than usual. I don't think anything of it until I open the shower door and am sprayed by sewage pumping out of the toilet waste disposal unit (looked like the pipe clip had come off the unit). THis was not just shower water and had lumps of excrement and toilet tissue in it. I was covered, the bathroom flooded and it flowed out all over the carpet into the bedroom. The pumping finally stopped but as the phone wasn't working in the bedroom, we had to go down to reception to complain. As you can imagine I was horrified at a)flooding the room and b)being sprayed with sewage and was somewhat in shock.

At reception we were treated politely but not in a very apologetic way. They indirectly inferred that it was OUR fault. I suspect they believed it was because we had put something down the toilet and found it hard to believe I was taking a shower. I wasn't offered somewhere else to clean up in and we just went to breakfast. To be honest, I was still in shock.

ON checkout half an hour later, they didn't take anything off the bill as promised for the first night and took NOTHING off for me being sprayed with sewage. THe attitude I felt was "you booked a cheap rate through Late Rooms so what do you expect when you trash our room too?" We obtained a free pot of tea and that was it.

To be honest, that ruined the whole weekend away. My boyfriend didn't want to argue at the desk as he's not really a complainer and he was taking me away for a treat. Personally, I think I should have at least had one night free for that trauma. I am hoping that by posting this information online they will consider who the customer is and that word of mouth is key. I had a friend who was planning to stay but has cancelled their trip following my experience so they have already lost business due to their poor service.

The castle itself is nice but a little remote. Would recommend going in Summer rather than Winter as the walking will be better.

BTW the restaurant serves good food but very pricey. We checked what the main meal came with and were told potatoes and veg. When it turned up it came with a tiny dollop of mash, 3 minature carrots and two asparagus spears. We had to eat the biscuits in the room as we were still hungry. The house white is very nice though and at £12.50/bottle is good value. About the only thing I'd recommend about this place.

I think it's a good venue for a wedding where you only have to stay one night and to be honest, I think that they only really value the wedding business - other guests are a necessary evil to keep the wolf from the door.

If you decide to go as there are plenty of positive reviews (and I do hope you have a good time), AVOID ROOM 308 as they probably haven't replaced the carpet which as I mentioned was flooded with sewage and that's a public health risk.

Night away with a difference!

Made a late booking for a nights stay away after Easter which cost half the price of the hotel tariff on the front desk. Really enjoyed our stay, the Castle is awesome and full of little nooks and crannies. When you eventually find your room (which I think the hotel staff leave you to find as a little bit of added fun) you're almost afraid to leave it in case you never find it again! The room was really nice - not very large, but well furnished and very warm. The bathroom was lovely but the toilet was a bit 'dodgy' due to the fact that it had one of those man-made flushing systems. The breakfast was excellent, buffet style full breakfast, cereals, fruit etc. All in all I would definitely visit again.

Unusual venue

from Arstambar
Booked through Laterooms and I think generally it was good value for money. It could be a truly stunning place but I think it could be so much better without any cost just a little tender loving care. Check-in was slow with one guy sorting through papers and another two watching the queue behind us get longer and while I was waiting I thought the glass cabinets in the reception area would benefit from a good clean! Although the castle is gorgeous and the surrounding area beautiful the hospitality is just missing something to me. The room was clean and warm but there were quite a few harsh "don't" signs around the place and this really made an impression on me - I feel softer requests would be so much nicer. On the whole a good stay but I'm not sure I would recommend it to my friends.

Small but lovely room

from SusanMLondon
It was a lovely 2 night stay, venue, room and the staff extremely friendly. But, the rooms are difficult to find with no help and the huge downside is the food, breakfast fine but dinner - give it a miss and go to the Swan Hotel in Tarporley. I had read reviews about the food on this site and they were correct, my partner's steak was cooked incorrectly, my lamb tough and desperate vegetables.
Go to the hotel and have a wonderful stay but eat elsewhere.

enjoyable stay

from JulieCLiverpool
Stayed here for 1 night on 5th March - last minute deal from so £60 for the double room bed and breakfast for my boyfriend and I. Staff all very friendly and helpful, room clean and well decorated and of a good size. TV good flat screen / plasma with freeview. Stayed in the 'Ghost Wing' but did not experience any spooky goings on! Breakfast was good - help yourself to cereal, yoghurt etc and a hot breakfast cooked to order which was very good. Strange set up in some ways e.g. Bar did not have ANY money in the till so had to put bill on room tab?????? Other bar had no Baileys so staff had to run up to the restaurant bar for a bottle. In other ways the service exceeded expectations - I asked if there was a vantage point from where I could see the surrounding area and was invited to take a tour with 2 staff members! This was really great and totally unexpected so I was delighted. Staff members were Sarah and Jonny so a "Big Thank You" to those two! Lovely setting and really unusual surroundings in which to stay. Decided to eat out at a local pub for evening meal since the hotel was quiet and no one else was in the restaurant. All in all an enjoyable stay for a good price.
