Historical Traveller Reviews of The Shakespeare Hotel

Good in parts

from Paul
Spent a Saturday night at the Shakespeare for a birthday treat. Perfect central location (two doors down from New Place). Room was cramped but well decorated - nice modern bathroom. The main lobby is very picturesque, but the rest of the building is nothing special. Breakfast was well cooked and generous. Charged £5 for hotel parking which is the going rate for central Stratford, but a bit of a cheek at a supposedly 4* hotel. Main gripe was that the staff appeared overworked and un-interested. The only customers who got particularly friendly treatment were a coach party of Americans - that's Stratford for you.

Loved the Shakespeare!

from JulieBStarkville
We only had one night in Stratford and we are so glad that we splurged on this hotel. The atmosphere is just magical - each room is unique and you are staying in history. The building dates from the 1500's but the bathrooms are totally new, complete with towel warmers. The rooms are decorated beautifully and the service was first rate. The breakfast was a wonderful buffet, as well as ordering off the menu - all included. We found the desk to be very helpful in giving directions and information. The only regret we have is that we couldn't stay another night!

A real treat

We have just returned from the UK where we spent part of our trip at the Shakspeare.

Like the previous reviewer we were given a Junior Suite instead of the standard Double we had booked - and only paid GBP78 including excellent English Breakfast that we had in the restaurant. Doubt many people actually pay the rack rate of GBP200 for the room. The room was very spacious with a massive bed, 2 TVs - one in the bedroom section and one in the very comfortable living area - mini bar, generous hospitality tray and large bathroom; it was spotlessly clean and had a superb view over the old roofs of Stratford.

We ate in the restaurant where the 3 Course Table d´Hote menu cost GBP26 p.p. - not cheap but high quality food and service, and beautiful setting. Breakfast was a good starter Buffet (fruit juices, fresh fruits, cereals, yoghourts, meats, cheeses etc.) with main course cooked to order in the kitchen; as well as the conventional English Breakfast there were other dishes such as Smoked Haddock.

The hotel is ideally situated in the centre of Stratford - close to the shops and tourist locations such as Shakespeares House.

All in all, we really enjoyed our stay and wouldn´t hesitate to return or recommend to anyone.

Room 101

Arrived on Friday 13th to the hotel in complete darkness due to a power cut! They had noticed on our booking details it was our anniversary and had upgraded us to the bridal sweet!! Stunning room complete with four poster bed and fireplace. Great atmosphere, lovely staff , wonderful weekend.

Lovely hotel, one sniffy barman

from conthemon
Beautiful hotel in a lovely town. I was there on businness but plan to go back again for pleasure./ There was one sniffy barman though (french i think) who sniggered to himself at our choice of wine.
That aside - lovely place. Highly recommended.

Charming but mediocre service

In a nutshell, I would say that this hotel stay was quite disappointing.

The hotel is in a great location and beautiful to look at with many of its original tudor features.

However, the room we stayed in "Merchant of Venice" was poky and overlooked the roof of the kitchen which meant we were subjected to banging plates, shouts etc etc from about 7am in the morning and again during the evening until about 11pm. The air conditioning was totally useless and the room was stuffy.

The gap under the door allowed a very nasty draught in and we ended up laying cushions in front of it. The facilities were ok: small portable TV, hospitality tray but nothing to write home about.

We arrived for a 2pm check-in and our room wasn't available until gone 3 and despite being told several times it'll be 5 more minutes, it was over an hour. We dined out at 2 lovely restaurants and going on the quality of the expensive breakfast, I'm glad we did! Breakfast service was very slow as well.

The car park staff were excellent and although there was a £5.00 per night charge, they allowed you to double park your car, kept your keys and shuffled cars around to make sure no-one had to use the public car park. I was a little alarmed to find my car sitting with its engine running across the entrance whilst they were moving another though!

All in all, this hotel has obviously been awarded its 4 star status due to its location and not for its quality or facilities.

Would I stay here again? Very unlikely.

Charming, traditional hotel

We stayed at the Shakespeare for 2 nights to celebrate my 40th birthday. We booked via their website and got a great deal which was a lot less than they wanted on the phone.

Room wasn't spectacular but was clean and cosy with a nice bathroom and good shower.

The only complaint we had was the poor service at breakfast. On both mornings we didn't receive what we ordered and despite asking the waiter to sort this out, had to wait a very long time and they still didn't get it right.

The location was perfect though - very central and close to great bars and restaurants. The Garrick pub is excellent and the landlord very friendly. We ate at the Lamb which was very good and also the Oppo which is part of the same group and also good.

We would stay at this hotel again.

great location....

from meesterbond
I stayed here for 2 nights with my fiance on 26th Oct 05. The hotel looks fantastic from outside and the reception area. Room no. 128 looked nice and the bathroom was small but had everthing you needed including Molton Brown toiletries..nice touch.
My only let downs were breakfast which was so slow and didnt taste that good compared to other hotels. The breakfast staff seemed so disorganised and made us late for checkout on our last day. When I called reception that breakfast had delayed my checkout I was rudely told that breakfast finished at 9:30 but I explained that I didnt get served till 10am and therefore didnt finish till they allowed us a miserly 30 minutes extra time for checkout. Any good hotel would of allowed at least an hour considering it was their fault. I would of scored the hotel much higher otherwise

Great Location

Stayed in the Shakespeare hotel for 3 nights at the end of September 2005. Lovely looking hotel with 5* location in the heart of Stratford.
Room was ok, stayed in 110, did not have a view out the window, except of other windows and was a little on the small side for the price paid. However was very clean and cleaned every day.
Didnt have any hot water on the first night or morning due to the boiler breaking down, but have to allow for these things to happen.
Breakfast was included in our price which i'm glad about as £14.95 for their breakfast was a rip off, not very nice at all ended up going out for breakfast the next two mornings.
Bar was very expensive and only had one round thankfully and the pints wern't that great.
Overall I would say this is a good hotel and would recommend to others if they could get a good deal on the price and please check the location of your room first.

Fantastic Looking Hotel

Central Stratford locatation couldn't be better. New refurbishment was very well done and has created real old but clean environment. Rooms are a little small and the airconditioning needs to work urgently. However, we did travel during a heat wave.

Top Local Tips for Stratford upon Avon

Good restaurant If you get the chance, go for a meal at Vintners on Sheep Street - it's fab!

Good walk Nice walk past Trinity church (see Shakespear's grave) then along to foot bridge and back along opposite side of river along "the rec". Good views of theatre. If you are going to the theatre and want a meal it pays to make a reservation beforehand!

Parking Parking is tricky in the central area. On street parking is either residents only or 2 hour stays max 7 days a week. The outer areas have unrestricted parking on Sundays.
