from A TripAdvisor MemberBreakfast was frankly a disgrace. The food under the hot buffet was at least two days old, the coffee and tea were disgusting, matched only by the superbly surly service, and we left to decamp to a Little Chef. I raised my concerns with the manager, who did not seem to be in control of his hotel. I do try and have a balanced view when I write reviews but this really was as bad as I have experienced. It wasn't cheap either. The problem with Stoke is that there are very few good hotels in town.
Do Not Stay here unless you like paying for sleeping on the streets!!!
from A TripAdvisor Memberve stayed in for years.
from AJGCThere was no evidence that any of our three rooms had been refurbished.
The service was awful. This was not the fault of the staff themselves but it was clearly
the result of bad management and understaffing.
It is the policy of the management that guests cannot be trusted. Therefore they
demand payment on the spot for every drink and meal.
Rooms had not been made up when we returned from our day's activities at 5pm.
In the main restaurant some of the windows right next to the food were totally
CAKED in dust. This was in full view of the guests, so I daren't think about what
the darker corners looked like.
On our second night there were two weddings on and as a result none of the
public rooms were available for ordinary residents. And, of course, as one previous
guest has written on this website if you were unlucky enough to get a room
directly over the function room then there was no chance of getting to sleep.
The car park has a dodgy barrier that wasn't working one morning. It took
about 15 minutes before a member of staff appeared to raise it to let us out.
t even stay the night!
from A TripAdvisor MemberWe decided to eat in the bar area and it felt like we had entered a recreation area at a university with plastic tables and chairs, overflowing with plates of food, dirty glasses and full ashtrays all over the place. We finally found a clean table, however the food and drinks were over-priced and the solitary memeber of staff working in the bar area seemed to resent that we asked for cutlery to eat our meals with.
With heavy hearts we headed back to our room, to be greeted by three teenage boys sat on the floor in the corridor a few yards away from our room. It was about 10 in the evening and we could hear them talking outside. I called reception who said they would send somebody up to check, but thirty minutes later I could still hear them talking. I finally dropped off to sleep around midnight, only to be woken by the "guest" in the next room returning to his room and loudly talking on his mobile, so loud in fact that it felt as if he was right in the room with us. I waited for at least forthy-five minutes, but with the "guest" not showing any sign of ending his conversation I got dressed and went to reception to see if another room was available, but was told the hotel was full. The Night Duty Manager also said he could not do anything about guests making noise in another room.
I returned to the room, advised my partner we were leaving, packed our things and we promptly left. The Night Duty Manager apologised, said we could have a refund (although he didn't know how to do it and the chap who could refund my card was off) and validated our parking for free (the carpark has a fee), advising us that we would not be able to find a hotel room at that time of night. We then found a room within ten minutes of leaving The North Stafford Hotel at The Holiday Inn Express.
After many phonecalls to the hotel and many instances of the Manager promising to call me back but not doing so, I finally received my refund over a month letter. Appalling service.
I didn't write a letter of complaint, I just will NEVER stay in any hotel owned by that particular chain again.
Dreadful, shabby, old, unclean, I could go on. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.
like sleeping in an ashtray
from A TripAdvisor MemberIf this fact was advertised we would have stayed somewhere else.
If you don't fancy paying through the nose for breakfast ( £15 for one cooked and one continental!) try the cafe in the train station across the street
Fantastic value for money!
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe hotel was extremely clean and tidy, the staff were very professional and of a smart appearance. Our room was nice and clean and nicely decorated, the food we had at the hotel was very nice and plentiful.
The Bar had a happy hour from 5pm until 7pm and a pool table that children could use.
The Alton Towers Package was well worth the money! We could not find a better deal elsewhere!
The hotel was half an hour from Alton Towers and we found it very easy to get to, we will definitely stay at the North Stafford Hotel, but would stay longer next time.
We had a lovely stay
from A TripAdvisor MemberI think the reviews on this site are very unfair. The hotel has obviously been refurbished now and management must have changed as we experienced none of the things complained about on here.
The receptionists were always polite, helpful and friendly. Our room was really nice - a very good size and extremely clean and tidy. The bathroom was very modern and immaculate. We had fresh towels everyday and tea & coffee was always replenished.
Breakfast was delicious - plenty of choice and everything was really nice. Most of the waiters/waitresses were polite and friendly. There was one chap who seemed like he had a bit of an attitude but we only saw him once.
Management were good too. When we first arrived in our room it was extremely hot but the duty manager did everything he could to put this right and it wasn't a problem for long.
Re Parking. You have to park in the car park to the right hand side of the hotel and it has a barrier so you get a ticket from the machine as you go through. However all you need to do is get reception to swipe this ticket when you need to leave the car park and just put this in the machine as you go out to make the barrier come up (like a multi-storey car park!). You do not have to pay to park there.
All in all we had a very good stay at this hotel (3 nights). The Alton Towers package is extremely good value for money and the park is only about 30 minutes drive away. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and would advise others that this hotel has obviously undergone a significant change since 03/04 and reviews from this time are now pretty much irrelevant.
No Problems at all
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe view from the room wasn’t wonderful but as Basil Fawlty would have stated ‘what do you expect to see from a Stoke hotel window!?’ The car park was secure and as stated in a previous review was protected with a barrier worked via a token picked up from reception. We didn't eat in the hotel but went exploring the area and found a nearby Wetherspoon pub selling Spitfire bitter for £1.39 a pint and excellent reasonably priced food. As we hadn’t paid for breakfast with our internet booking we went back to the pub on the Sunday morning and had a full English + coffee for £2-99. Enough of this it sounds like an advert for Mr Wetherspoon! In conclusion a very pleasant stay, good value for money with no negative feedback I can think of.
Do not stay here if you have children!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
from bhg1272Worse however was the fact that on both the Friday and Saturday nights there were functions on in the ballroom and our FAMILY room was located directly above it!!!!!!The music was still playing at 1a.m. and I eventually had to phone reception to complain. To add insult to injury the hotel had put party-goers in the room next to us so even after the noise from downstairs stopped the people next door continued the party in their room!
Our towels were not replaced, luckily we had taken our own, the cups with the coffee-making facilities were dirty and the toilet roll was rationed!
I would DEFINATELY not recommend this hotel and plan to put an official complaint in writing to the company.

Great savings Book the North Stafford on a Friday or Sunday and you will save 25% on your wedding Breakfast
Accommodation for Alton Towers After leaving the dire hotel in our review, we eventually found a great B&B only 1 mile from Alton Towers but we had a choice of about 3. I'd recommend the B&Bs nearer the Towers rather than hotels in nearby towns. The service was fantastic and with a 2 minute door-to-door drive on the morning we could leave a little later than originally planned. We stayed at Banks Farm. Fab value for money,, beautiful inside and out, and extremely friendlly couple who own it. There are many guest houses, pubs with rooms, B&Bs on the way into Alton Towers, so it's worth trying them first.
