When we arrived the staff were ok, at dinner the service was poor, and at breakfast the service was terrible we had to wait several minutes before we were told "sit anywhere you want" and before we had sat down as we were walking past other tables the waitress asked us what we wanted to drink!!
The room was ok and the bathroom was very good.
When we checked out we were not asked if we had enjoyed the stay we didn't even get a smile!! Won't be staying here again as simply other hotels are better.

I have had many other holidays and stayed in countless other Hotels over the years so my views are not those of some parochial yokel who knows nothing different but a balanced view from experience.
A visit to The Porthminster is like visiting a second home. Firstly all the management and staff are courteous, friendly and helpful with the sole intention of making your stay a pleasant and memorable one.
The views of the stunning St Ives Bay from the bar lounge, lounge, and due to the Victorian design most of the bedrooms, have to be experienced as words cannot do them justice.
The food is excellent and plentiful and should you not find something to tempt you on the varied choice 5 course Table d'hote menu there is a wide A la Carte menu also available.
There are both indoor and outdoor swimming pools together with a gym where you can work off the excesses of over indulgence or there is a pleasant garden where you can sit and while away the hours with panoramic views of the bay.
The bedrooms are pleasant and roomy offering all the normal requirements and the management continually strive to improve facilities in line with modern demands.
Indeed over the winter months the majority of the rooms have been subject to a full refurbishment and on my last stay in February even I was totally amazed. Some rooms boast a four poster or half tester bed together with spa baths and all the other refinements normally associated with a four star hotel rather than the three currently allocated.
To coincide with the refurbishment I noticed the web site (http://www.porthminster-hotel.co.uk/) has been revised, which unlike the previous one now really does give a true reflection of what The Portminster offers.
When taking everything into consideration The Porthminster offers excellent value for money.
I can fully recommend a holiday at The Porthminster whether it be a family summer holiday or an out of season break and should you want something different for the Christmas and New Year period I can thoroughly recommend that as well.

Disappointing Experience - real shame!
from KJXIt was when we got there that things went down hill. The room was ok - the bed reasonably comfortable, the view of the bay the best thing about the visit.
The bathroom however was minute - and had a liberal dusting of 'special hairs' from previous residents. Not nice. The shower was extremely tempermental as well.
We had booked evening meal and breakfasts for the duration of our stay - I cannot recommend the evening meals at all. The menu was uninspired to say the least. The service however was wonderful and friendly.
We came away feeling very let down.
Loved The Porthminster
from NorgillThe food was excellent as were the rooms.
The staff were very friendly and it was good value for money.
We will certainly go again.
Never again.
from winchelseaMy heart sank when I saw the bar. It was fenced off, just like a working mens club. What has happened to our new licensing laws.? Breakfast- the only meal we had there-, was a help yourself affair, alonfg the lines of a motorway service station.
The lift was designed to cause problems. It had a double gate, which meant that the lift did not work if someone forgot to close the inner gate- a frequent occurrence.
The toilet by the swimming pool had dirty towels and no paper and this was at 10.30 on a monday morning. It is a great pity. The staff were charming and the hotel is in a fantastic position and was not expensive.Maybe an increase in the price could be spent on improvements

Loved the Porthminster
from Dianespicer3rd rate
from A TripAdvisor MemberStay here if you like tiny, old fashioned double beds, terrible decor, strip lights in the bar and sticky carpets. On the other hand if you live in an old folk's home you should feel comfortable right away.
Having said that the staff were friendly and the more up to date rooms looked OK (when we sneaked a peek).
We enjoyed our stay here
from pamcelCHARMING OLD HOTEL - FOR ALL THE FAMILY
from A TripAdvisor MemberMy family enjoyed it immensley especially the adjoining room for the children with sea views. All amenities were there and I found it to be more than a 3 star apartment. The breakfast was very good for a 3 star aswell. All in all I would recommend it.
Never Stay Here
from A TripAdvisor MemberAvoid like SARS. Expensive and third rate lodging
Good Old Place

Top Local Tips for St. Ives
Location Don't stay in the center of St Ives unless you don't mind crowds. I recomend staying just a short walk away from the town centre it is much more peaceful.
Restaurant St. Andrews street Bistro- fantastic food, loved it
Relax on the beach The Porthminster beach with its golden sands , beautiful turquoise sea and vibrtant atmosphere and stunning views of the harbour is absolute paradise . We love to eat at the Porthminster Beach Cafe we have been visiting that cafe since it opened well over 18 yrs ago , the food is wonderful fresh fish cooked in a mediterranean way . Or alternatively eat fish and chips that are delicious ,freshly cooked from the take away underneath the beach cafe . The magic of St Ives has drawn us back each year now for a quarter of a century , its unique light , mild climate , art galleries and friendly , welcoming local people give us a very special hoilday.
