Excellent trip

I don't know where all the previous reviewers stayed, but I don't think it was the same Sopwell House I visited! I booked in for a weekend stay with my friend, and we could not have been more delighted with our room, the facilities on offer, and the service provided.
We did not have to wait to check in, the lift did not break down, and our room was spacious and well-decorated. We ate in the Brasserie restaurant for our evening meal, and could not have received better service! We were made to feel very welcome, we were not rushed, and the food was delicious. I know many of the previous complaints have regarded service, however for a hotel which deals mostly with leisure guests, I find it refreshing to be faced with staff who are relaxed enough to serve you in a friendly and outgoing manor, rather than robotically placing food in front of you without so much as a smile in case it causes offence (and I have faced this at other hotels). The food was delicious and served in a timely manor, and I did not find the prices at all offensive when compared to other hotels of similar standing in the London area. Breakfast next morning was a well-displayed and very appetising buffet, and when we ordered coffee it was delivered within minutes and was piping hot. Again, I have not received such service at other "5 star" establishments. The quick and efficient service at breakfast was testament to a restaurant which is well-managed, as they were incredibly busy (as Sunday breakfasts are in hotels all over the country - surely this is not something to complain about!). I agree that many of the staff have foreign origins, however would point out that just because someone talks with a foreign accent, does not mean they do not speak English!!
We did not take advantage of the spa treatments so I cannot comment on that, however we found the health club as a whole to be attractive and well-maintained, and again staff were extremely helpful.
Check-out went without a hitch, and we had no surprises on our bill.
Overall, I would do as other reviewers have recommended and look out for good deals on the internet, but please do not be put off visiting this hotel. I would encourage other people who have had a good stay to contribute to this site!

these people are thieves

These people are thieves. I arrived at about 10:00AM on a Tuesday. In addition to the nights I stayed, they charged me for Monday night claiming that check in time is 15:00 and I arrived early and therefore must pay for the night before. I didn't find this out until I received my credit card statement. No one told me when I booked or when I checked in that I'd be charged for the previous night.

In addition - the food is awful.

The hotel has poorly trained and inefficient staff, some of whom could barely speak English.
The Brasserie restaurant, which also doubles as the breakfast room, is soulless, ill lit and has a second rate menu that is repeated every day.
The breakfast was usually cold.
We arrived at 5pm to find bedroom corridors littered with breakfast trays. The room was small, poorly furnished and the showerhead fell off the wall when being used.
The hotel advertises that all rooms are accessible for disabled guests. It possesses one lift that brokedown within 10 minutes of arrival, result disabled partner stranded on second floor.
The prices in the bar will be a shock to anyone who goes there (at least Dick Turpin wore a mask) and the service again was poor.

My partner and I stayed here on Saturday night. We were attending a dinner party for 19 in the Magnolia Restaurant to celebrate his mother's 80th birthday and decided to make "a weekend of it". As I had already checked this hotel out on Trip Advisor I knew to expect very little; I was not disappointed! We arrived at 15:15 and although our room was ready another couple checking in with a baby were kept hanging around. The room was tired and worn; carpet and furniture stained and shabby, however, the bathroom had obviously been refurbished and was very nice. The meal in the restaurant was okay and everything went satisfactorily but a little more effort could have been given to the presentation of the beef dish; a lump of beef topped with lentils sat on top of a potato piece with no other vegetables -not even for colour! The following morning we had to wait in the bar for half an hour before being seated for breakfast (where we were promised coffee but then asked to pay for it!) in what looked like a motor way service station. The mushrooms had gone the beans cold and the egg congealed. As a member of Nirvana Spa I decided not to go near their health facilities. Upon check out they had charged for a paper which, according to their ambiguous web site was "a feature of the room". This was then reluctantly taken off by one of their inept and unprofessional receptionists. In summary, this hotel is in desperate need of refurbishment and management.

I was going to write a long account of ou terrible evening tonight however I didn't want to waste any more of my valuable time on this restaurant. All I can say is that for a 2AA rosette restaurant the majority of the main meals were bland and unappetising. The service, to use the term loosly, was very poor and the staff unhelpful and useless!.
We had had another bad experience last month and had been invited by the hotel's assistant manage to give them another chance. Well they had it and we will not return. An expensive mistake. We should have gone to McDonalds at least you get what you pay for there.

Maximum profit for minimum service

I had expectations of reasonable service for £238 for a room and I was hugely disappointed. Our room wasn't available on check in (after the published 3pm check-in time!) and I was offered nothing other than to wait by way of compensation. There were no bathrobes in the Spa, which was massively over-crowded. A football team were staying there (seems to be a regular event as they have football hall of fame), who were all in the pool at the same time, so you couldn't swim laps. The only treatment appointments available were 20 minute slots and the treatments were very basic and over-priced. The service in the restaurant was appallingly slow. The breakfast was a disgrace - very over-crowded again, they didn't replenish the food supplies promptly, the scrambled eggs were sloppy and raw and the sausages were definitely from the 'saver' range. A shame.

Sopwell house was a very expensive mistake for me and my family. The staff were unhelpful, the meals mediocre and we were overcharged twice on our final bill. A complaint made at the time was dismissed by the duty manager and a written complaint received a standard apology and nothing more. I would never stay there again.

This is ok if you are attending a conference, but I would not choose it as a leisure destination. I wasn't paying for the room and facilities, so was not in a position really to complain to the hotel.

Facilities were adequate, though my room was very hot, the windows couldn't be opened, and the temperature controls were stuck down the side of the wardrobe and hence inaccessible.

Food was ok, but the maitre d' was quite short with a group of young women who made the grave faux pas of sitting down for breakfast at an unlaid table!

We stayed at the Sopwell House for my wife's birthday and had a great time. I thought the room was very comfortable and clean, the service was excellent and spa facillities were also good. Yes the spa could do with a bit of a makeover and the small eating area attached to the spa is a good idea but feels like you are eating in a 1970's greenhouse.The staff in the poolside restaurant were also a bit noisy. There are also nowhere near enough beds in the pool area so get there early to avoid dissappointment. We ate in Magnolia Restaurant, the food was good, cooked well but could have been a bit hotter. Service in the lounge bar was very good, but at those prices it should be!! Overall a very enjoyable stay, if you get a the right deal.

Awful, bad, terrible

My wife and her friend just came back from a weekend break. The room was ok however food in the restaurant was terrible and service was very POOR. Also the lunch menu the following day seemed very similar and when they requested a sandwich they were told they could only spend up to a certain amount being on the break they were, great.....
All in all service very bad know one listened and even at checkout the so called duty manager could not even come up with a solution, stay elsewhere.
