This hotel has gone down in standards in the last year. Some of the staff are exeptional in the service they give. This hotel was once a welcoming and friendly place to stay. I must say we are very upset the way this hotel has treated a very loyal and trusted member of their staff.
Therefore, we would not be recommending this hotel in the future.

Excellent Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
I'm a travel conultant based in London and recently booked a couple of nights away in Southampton. I have stayed at many hotels and this is the first time I have stayed at De Vere hotel.

The staff are very freindly and helpful from start to finish of our stay.

Breakfast was excellent hot and cold buffet breakfast. We had breakfast basis but if you purchase breakfast locally its around £14.00 per person.

I didn't have dinner at this hotel although the menu looked very nice I was on a budget!! so we we went to a nice italian place Bella Italia located in the town centre located 5 minutes drive distance from the hotel. We also went to Chiquitos the opposite direction about 10-15 minute walk, there are also plenty of other resturaunts open in the main shopping streets.

The Rooms are plesent grand in style 'Edwardian' furnishing but also modern in facilities I cant comment on the traditional room which is their standard room as I had booked the waterfront deluxe room with a balcony, very nice the rooms were very clean spacious minibar, ironing facilities, T.V Tea, Coffee making facilities. The bathroom is very modern and clean.

Swimming pool was a good size open from 7am till 10pm other pampering facilities are expensive thats why I only had my eyebrows re- shaped for a fiver.

The hotel in general is very close to the docks, shoping centre, food places and the main road. I definately reccommend this hotel, very good location and compared to the others that I had a good nose at the Novotel would be my 2nd choice simply because I have stayed at many Novotels and you expect the same from wherever you go.

Another excellent stay

The Grand Harbour never fails to please. The superb ambiance, attentive staff and good food are a pleasure. Had an overnight stay in May and booked a Deluxe Waterfront room which was spacious and well appointed. The bathrooms are getting a little tired however but that is a minor complaint. The food in Number 5 restaurant continues to be good and the fact that you can order three starters if you prefer rather than the traditional starter and main course gives plenty of variety. I still rate the Grand Harbour as one of my favourite hotels and always look forward to returning.

excellent hotel

Hotel located at the port and about 10 mins walk from centre of Southampton. Hotel was excellent, room was large, good facilities and ready on arrival. The hotel had a vast array of facilities i.e swimming pool, snooker room etc which were well maintained. I would definately recommend the hotel and wouldnt think twice about returning.

Much Improved - Great Stay!

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I stayed at the De Vere Grand Harbour about three years ago. Although I enjoyed my stay back then greatly I must say how bowled over I was much improved quality of the hotel and the service. Its relaxed and friendly not 'stuffy' like some 5* hotels can be! The bar and main areas give a great feeling of space and light...perfect to relax with a paper and some coffee.

Our room was bright and airy, clean and well furbished with fabulous views of the water. We ate in the Number 5 restaurant on the first night and enjoyed a very nice meal served by staff who were very very friendly but not 'in your face'...well trained! On the second night we deciced to relax a little and ordered room service. If you think room service is a microwaved burger and chips then think again....superb!

A great stay will come back when we are next in the UK

How not to do breakfast...

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have just spent a weekend break in this hotel and overall I would have to say it was a reasonably good experience, with the staff being friendly, helpful and courteous. There were a couple of things wrong with the room - like a cooling system that didn't work and a light bulb not functioning in the bathroom. For the money I would expect a better quality mattress - certainly one that didn't seem to have sharp spring-ends in as my partner found out to her misfortune.

What really spoiled it for me was the utter fiasco of Sunday breakfast. OK I know it's always likely to be busy, but in how many other 5* hotels would you expect to wait 15 minutes to get a table, 3 minutes to get a clean glass for your fruit juice and just under 10 minutes to get a packet of muesli? Get the general idea? Total farce! And no, it wasn't actually that busy - just that nobody had cleared at least half of the tables and there were dishes piled high one every worktop!

The location is convenient - close to shops, and generally the hotel is ok, but for the money I paid and the fact that it claims to be 5*, I expect a bit better. Would I stay there again? Not sure...!

Oh, one last thing - for those who assume that any luggage left with the concierge is secure - think again. It gets left in the foyer for anybody to interfere with (or worse).

Extremely Disappointing

from A TripAdvisor Member
My sister and I stayed here for two nights. On arrival our first room had a broken window (literally hanging off its frame) dirty glasses, wallpaper coming off the walls and a sink in which the plug was firmly plugged in with no way of removing it. We asked to be moved and were (the staff were very pleasant) our second room had an empty mini bar and clear signs of the previous occupant. We found her keycard details and shortly after we found signs of her in the bed, which it seemed hadn't been changed. Again staff were very sympathetic and helpful and immediately changed the bed. It was a chilly night and I decided to use the spare blanket. However, when I got it out of the wardrobe it was covered in crusty brown stains. When we got up the next day we discovered one of the previous geusts hair rollers, matted with hair lying on the floor. I assume that this had come out of the bed when the staff changed it as I am fairly sure that it wasnt there initially. This time we insisted on being moved as it was clear that the room had not been cleaned.

I must say that the staff were always pleasant and willing to help but it really must be said that while I could have happily overlooked any of these incidents (except the slept in bed) in isolation it seems to me that there were too many to be overlooked in the course of a two day stay particularily in a 5 star hotel. We were given a complimentary bottle of champagne and toiletries but really I would have found it more pleasing and restful to have had a decent clean room and to have stayed in it for the duration of my stay rather than having to move twice.

I will certainly not stay there again.

Friendly and Professional Service

What a wonderful place. The hotel itself is beautiful. The staff is prepared and ready to serve. They are professional and eager th help how ever they can. The food is excellent and not to be missed. It is conveniently located near a large shopping center. There are many parks within walking distance. The ferry to the Isle of Wight is a short walk down the road, as is the ferry to Hythe. The Isle of Wight is well worth seeing and Hythe has some quaint shops. My husband and I stayed at the hotel for 10 days and had a wonderful time.

Expensive but worth it.

Recently stayed for 1 night.

I'm normally critical of hotels but this one really did surprise me.

I arrived at reception at 8pm and the welcome could not have been nicer. Food was good both room service and breakfast.

Overall the staff were all extremely friendly indeed.

The only negative I would say is the bar area needs new seating and perhaps it was a bad evening but I went in at 10pm for a quick drink at a time when it wasn't busy, 2-3 people serving 4 small groups and I had to wait 15mins, I gave up in the end. Apart from that it was overall very good and I'd stay again.

Very Good Indeed

from TheLondonGuy
A very good hotel indeed, ideal for a pre-cruise stay. Some rooms point towars the port so you can see the QM2 or QM2 arrive. The breakfast room is particularly nice.

The Hotel is a little expensive, but you do get what you pay for. The in-house food is also rather expensive. However, you can walk into town and get cheaper eats.

Just arrived home from a 1 night stay and can highly recommend

from vivvy
Just arrived home from a 1 night stay at the De Vere Grand Harbour Hotel and can highly recommend it. The room was a deluxe King - overlooking the 'sea' - the view was a bit disappointing but everything else was as to be expected. The bathroom was lovely and the bed much larger than the average King Size. We opted for valet parking which turned out to be excellent and we didn't actually pay for the car parking. The suitcases were taken up to our room, for which we gave a small tip. The food in the No5 restaurant was excellent although pricey. Even more extortianate was the cost of the drinks in the bar, although we did spoil ourselves and ordered in total 3 rounds. The leisure club was also excellent. Will stay again - hopefully.

Top Local Tips for Southampton

Museums to visit The Solent Sky museum is worth 90 minutes for anyone with an interest in aviation. The Museum of Archeology also warrants a reasonable amount of time in order to learn about the three different historic Southamptons : the Roman, the Saxon, and the Mediaeval.

Food There are no really decent restaurants in Southampton

The Solent We enjoyed seeing the Queen Mary and several other liners depart Southampton. The city walls walk is also very interesting.
