Not too good.
Just had a weekend stay here and will not stay there again. Fortunately we did pay the discounted price for our stay which helped a little. Good points: friendly staff, ok room facilities, good breakfasts. Bad points: Evening meals (vastly overpriced for the quality). Extra costs(room service £5 per person per tray!!!!), internet. The evening meals cost £25 for 3 very average courses. There are far cheaper and much better quality eating establishments within a stones throw. Also a word of warning, DO NOT PARK outside the Hotel. We parked there to unload luggage and Elderly Disabled relatives, got them checked in and escorted them to their room. Returned to the car which was parked in the designated unloading area with Blue Badge prominently displayed in the car only to find the Parking Mafia had ticketed us. So always leave one person with the car if you are loading or unloading
This is the hotel my friends and family head for when we visit England. The staff are warm and friendly, the food is varied and well presented, and the hotel itself has an interesting choice of decor. When I stay there alone, I prefer one of the suites on the top floor. When with my husband he prefers the newly redecorated suites on lower floors.
Perhaps the previous reviewer was guilty of seeing his "small group of teenage girls through rose coloured glasses. Such a group can be noisy and disrespectful, yet be described as 'cute' by their parents. This is not an hotel for badly behaved children.
As Americans we expect value and service for our money, and we certainly found it at the Royal hotel. Thank You!

Southerners??? Are you too picky?
My husband and I have just returned from a great overnight stay at the Royal. It's our wedding anniversary this weekend and we wanted to treat ourselves to a night away from the children (aged 13 and 2). I chose the Royal for the central location. After reading the review from Mr Ferguson I was pleasantly surprised at receiving the complete opposite as regards service!!! The staff were very pleasant and efficient. No problems with the breakfast menu, bar service, housekeeping and standard of decor in the room. It looked very recently refurbished. If you are thinking of staying at the Royal make sure you only pay £95 per night for a standard double. Some web sites quote around £120 for the same deal. There's a new bar opened just down the road to the left called 'Barracuda'. Great food throughout the day and a great atmosphere in the evening. Its about time Scarborough had a nice bar!!!!

Appalling Service, poor decor
This hotel fell way below our expectations and the advertising frankly is misleading. Many rooms are dowdy and are well below standards demonstrated in other, less expensive hotels. There is no attention to detail. Service in the restaurant is slow, the bar staff are not trained in how to make specialist drinks, the wine waiter has not got a clue about wine or making of other drinks, there is no waiter service in the bar when there is entertainment. I was only given a breakfast menu on day four to then realise there were far more options available to me than the standard fare laid out. Coffee after dinner was not offered and had to be ordered from the bar, where one barman had to contend with many people. Our party included a small group of teenage girls whose behaviour throught the week was exemplary, yet they were patronised and talked to rudely by the housekeeper and some reception staff. The general manager was never available when you asked for him and duty management were not abl...Read more
