Historical Traveller Reviews of Express by Holiday Inn Salford Quays Hotel

Polite and Convenient

from stagemanager
Stayed here last month, rang the hotel directly to make my booking, person on the phone was friendly and polite.

When arriving at the hotel i was really pleased with the local area, as never staying here before and reading some reviews, i had got the wrong impression. The area has a few local restaurants all good value for money and discount at one or two for being a guest. the lowry outlet mall that emptied my wallet on clothes shopping, and 2 minute walk to the theatre which was the reason for my stay.

When arriving at the hotel i was greeted warmly and quickly checked in, staff were polite and helpful and advised me on the local gym i could get a day pass for as a guest of the hotel, the room was clean and well maintained with air conditioning installed, apparently they were currently refurbing the bedrooms.
Breakfast, was continental but very sufficient and the check out time for 12:00 noon was very good knowing i didnt have to rush after breakfast.

All in all, a very pleasent stay had, polite friendly staff, clean modern decorated hotel, and a very nice area to stay!

Request a room at the back!

from travellingstar
Stayed here with a friend for 2 nights whilst going to a gig at the cricket ground. Comfortable beds and clean but I felt it was expensive for what it was - £100 a night. Breakfast is OK, but not exactly exciting.

We book this due to the location of the hotel to our gig (walkable) and clearly they allocate rooms based on how early you book as we were on the first floor above the reception. HUGE error. Due to the new smoking laws, there were people constantly outside smoking right below our window until 4 am on the Friday night and 6 am on the Saturday so got no sleep at all. We did try to contact reception on the Sat but no answer! We did get a night free but only after pushing for it as orgininally they offered £25 off.

I would go back but only if I could be on the top floor with a room at the back overlooking the water! Also don't go when the triathlon is on - we had to move our car to one of the car parks at Old Trafford which meant walking the 15 min walk with all our bags as they closed all the roads around the hotel! I also was not keen about leaving my car in the car park in this part of Manchester! Needless to say it was a quiet drive home!

A good quality budhet hotel

from joeintheuk
Lets be clear, this is a budget hotel, so you dont get fantastic scenery, chocolates on the pillows, or a concierge. What you do get, in my experience anyway, is, for just £49 (not sure if I was on some sort of a deal), decent sized clean double room, comfortable beds, helpful staff, shower that works , (air con is being installed now), and a basic but OK continental breakfast.

Its very close to the Man U ground and a big outlet mall, with a cinema, plus a few chain restaurants. Other than that its in the middle of nowhere, but its only a £7, 10 min taxi into the city centre (or tram but as there were 4 of us I'm sure taxi was cheaper).

A good choice for people on a budget, or perhaps who dont want to be in what might be a busy and noisy manchester city centre at night when they are trying to sleep, but dont want to be miles away. Also plenty of parking outside, I'm pretty sure it was free but cant be 100% on that as we didnt have a car.

It seemed to help, when getting the deal that I was a member of the Holiday Inn Priority Club, same goes for the quick checkin/out, no big deal to join that on line. Plus the deal was prepaid, eg if you cancel or dont show, your money is toast :-)

So I've rated this 5 out of 5 when comparing like for like, eg vs other budget hotels I've stayed in, this is one of the best, and I would stay here again.
So my 5 stars means that compared to other properties its the tops, but please dont think its the Ritz!

Handy Location, Offers the Basics you need

from SweetChop
This hotel is not in the centre of Manchester, its just a few miles outside on the Salford Quays.

The nearest Tram stop is about 5 minutes walk away. The Tram is an easy and cheap way to get to and from the town centre and runs right into the mainline station Piccadilly. MetroMax ticket is great value. The surrounding area is not great but you are in walking distance of the Lowry, about 10mins. The shopping mall is there (not a lot of shops) and a Pizza Express, Cafe Rouge and the Beefeater is nearby to. All no more than 10 mins walk inc the thearte. Handy for the Cricket ground & Man Utd to.

The Hotel is what you'd expect from a 'limited services' hotel. That said its presentation is good. The rooms are all of standard you'd expect. Always clean and well presented. Breakfast is a simple affair but does offer all you'd need unless you want a cooked breakfast.

If you book online and are an executive club member check in is easy & fast, your room key is waiting for you.

Air Con is due for installing at the end of the month so I'm told, a must as Manchester seems warmer these days!.

It offers all I need in a handy location for my needs. Might not be everybodies cuppa tea but then the best judge is always yourself.

Very nice modern Hotel, nice immediate area, bad surrounding area

from bristol_traveller_06
I've stayed at a lot of Holiday Inn hotels & this one was as expected, nice room, familiar facilities, good service and a very nice express buffet continental breakfast which is always enjoyed. We
were only there for one night & were perfectly happy with the hotel.

We also got a discount at one of the nearby restaurants, Chiquto's, by showing our room card AND also providing the small card printout with my name & room number on (the room card, initially given by itself, did not seem enough & this was also requested, but once provided the discount was given which was good).

However this is located towards one of the poorer parts of Manchester
& while the hotel gives good instructions on using the Tram system to
get into town, which we used, we found that the trams are a bit crowded and on the way back experienced yobs trying to start fights with people on the trams which was most unexpected & quite alarming.

As such I would recommend avoiding Manchester's public transport system if traveling between the hotel & the city center. I would have
rather got a taxi than had to experience this sort of yobbish/
aggressive behaviour.

First time I have seen this in the UK & I have done loads of travelling around the UK.

But as I said, the hotel it self is fine.

Good location on the Quays

from Dimeander
Good Express By Holiday Inn hotel. Received a good welcome on arrival. Room was clean and modern, though one of the bulbs in the main room light had gone. Hotel is convenient for business in Salford Quays and visits to Old Trafford, and appeared to have plenty of parking. Nearest tram stop is Salford Quays, this isn't mentioned in the directions on the website.

Nice Hotel but Chaos when we arrived

from Jodublin
When we arrived, they said that only one of our three rooms were paid for. Staff were extremely unhelpful and had to pay for rooms again upon arrival. Hotel was clean and modern. Bathroom was small. No wardrobe in the room just a hanging rail and shelves. Room was small but had everything you needed. Contential Breakfast was fine.
Hotel is in a business district so very quiet at the weekends.
Cheap and cheerful.

Good location for Old Trafford

from weebubs
Paid £79 for a double room B&B staying 30 December 1 night. We arrived 11am knowing the room wouldn't be ready but reception staff put ticket on our bag and kept for us. Returned after the match to a second floor room which look as though it had been recently refurbished. All spotlessly clean and modern. Tea, coffee making facilities, TV, nice bathroom, quiet.

The bar downstairs was fine, small and it doubled as the breakfast area, bit pricey but to be expected. Breakfast in the morning was completely self service but there was plenty of choice. Would use again.

t stay anywhere else in Manchester!

from ChicagoGirlAtHeart
We flew over for a Man United match, had fantastic service. We had prepaid for the room through the Ryan Air website (never again), and they had no record of the booking. The staff went above and beyond the call of duty. They made sure we had a room (the hotel was booked because of the match), and they sorted the problem we had with our pre-payment not showing up. You are in walking distance to Old Trafford, and the shopping in the Trafford Centre is only a short, inexpensive taxi ride away. The free breakfast wasn't anything exciting, but it did the trick!

Nice hotel but rough location

from AllyDick2
The hotel was nice, rooms were clean and the staff friendly.

However, the biggest problem is that the hotel is on Salford Quay, a rough area of Manchester. It was very hard to get a taxi to take us back to the hotel and it was also a long walk from the city centre (approx 45 minutes). On the advertisements , it says that this hotel is only 5 minutes from the city centre. This is all very well if you can get a taxi to take you !!!!

Top Local Tips for Salford

Avoid the tram system if travelling to Salford Quays Avoid the Eccles tram if going to Salford Quays, it seems crowed & yobs try to start fights with passengers for no reason.

Trams Trams stop around midnight, so if your going on a night out remember this. Get a taxi it only £7 from manchester city centre!

You can rid to the end of the tram line ... but there do not appear to be any curry houses in Eccles.
