OK for overnight stay

Hotel is fine for an overnight stay and very basic. Take some extra pillows with you! Check in was quick and efficient, room was small and very very hot (with both windows open) Located right in the centre of Portsmouth. Nice to see a hotel that does not charge extra for the carpark. We got a special deal via the Ibis website and we got what we paid for.

We went to stay for just one night on Friday the 13th April. I was looking for somewhere to put our heads down to sleep so I didn't have to drive home. I was reading the reviews and was a little surprised because all of the IBIS hotels I have ever stayed in have been small but ok. The one thing you have to remember is this hotel is a 2* hotel. The rooms only cost £40-£58 per night. You don't get much for this kind of money. The rooms are small, there is very little space to store anything and its not the quietest hotel in the world . However its clean, the staff are good, its in a good location and the beds are a normal size. If your going to get a ferry the next day of just need a place to stay for the night then this is great no frills accommodation. If you want a big room and more luxury then go and stay at the Holiday Inn, but you will be paying double the price.

No chance of a peaceful nights sleep

Arrived at 1215 and the room was ready, as we wanted to spend the day at the guildhall before the concert that evening that was great. Nice reception,bar area check-in no problems. Room very small just enough room for two single beds which where stuck together like a double anyway, 1 pillow each and the hardest most uncomftable mattress you would ever have to sleep on!! Blanket and sheet no duvet!! Really small pod like bathroom (it must of been the smallest bathroom ive ever seen!!) i believe this is normal for Ibis. Room was meant to be non-smoking but there was a smell of stale smoke. No hairdryers and tv just had the basic channels.
No air con really hot and by leaving the window slightly open all you could hear all night were staff talking outside which kept us awake along with doors banging closed all night long within the hotel.
Location was great for the guildhall (5mins) train station (10mins) walking
Staff were friendly and helpful but i wouldnt return to any Ibis hotel again it was the worst nights sleep i have ever had away from home and has really put me off using this hotel chain again.

Perfectly adequate for an overnight stay

I think the reviews I have read where somewhat unfair as my husband and I stayed overnight on the 25th March and found the experience to be a generally good one. The staff were friendly and helpful. The rooms were basic, but clean and the shower had hot water which doesn't always happen in some hotels. My only criticism is the breakfast is a bit overpriced for what is available. However the overall experience was a pleasurable one and I would certaily use this hotel again.

Basic, but fine for me

The rooms are definitely small but it was fine for me. There isn't much storage space, but for a single business traveller I had enough space.

The staff were very friendly, and the Ibis menu the same as ever but adequate.

My room was generally clean, although the bathroom could do with a deep clean to remove mould around shower bases. However I have seen far worse.

The wardrobe storage is indeed too small for solid cases, but if you have soft bags it's OK.

If you are looking for luxury and space stay elsewhere. But if you are looking for somewhere to sleep and work it's absolutely fine.

me and a bunch of other loons stayed there for 6 months couple o years ago...working on a block of flats oppositte the hotel......the hotel was fine , staff there were great, let us do all kinds of crazy things.and always they had a smile for us , like to say hi to them if they ever read this . kev.

Worst Hotel Ever!

This is by far and away the worst hotel I have ever had the misfortune to stay in. The service was bad, the room was the size of a broom cupboard, if I sat on the toilet my knees touched the wall (and I'm only 5'9"), the restaurant was very smoky, the walls were paper thin and I have a strong suspision the sheets were not clean. In fact I have nothing good at all to say about this hotel other than the fact that I felt lucky my car had not been stolen when I left.
I was visting Portsmouth with my mother and felt embarassed to have taken her to such a dump. After arriving at 7pm we went out for dinner and checked into another hotel in Gunwharf Quays for the next day and our experience there was much better.
My advice is to steer clear of this hotel at all costs.

The corridors to the rooms are dark and uninviting. The room itself is hardly bigger than the bed. Just enough room for one person, would be a struggle with two. The bathroom is even more constrained with the toilet in an angled corner - badly designed, the shower tray is also really tiny. Breakfast was OK, and the staff were pleasant, but let down by the rooms. It's cheap, but that's all it's got going for it.

Overpriced for such basic accomodation

The Ibis is closer to being a high-class hostel than a budget hotel. The rooms are much too small with no proper storage. The "bathroom" is simply a joke - more like a cupboard in which you have to be a contortionist to do anything, it is so tiny. During a hot spell in july the lack of air-conditioning made the place very stuffy (though we were lucky to borrow a fan) and the window could not be opened properly.
On our last morning the cold water supply to the hotel failed - a potentially dangerous problem - and the staff were inundated with complaints.
We paid the higher 'events' tariff for our stay but even the normal rate is too high for the quality of accomodation on offer. Other budget hotel chains offer much better value for money.
On the positive side, the hotel is well-located and the staff, who are all young, try to do their best in difficult circumstances.

Standard Ibis but disappointing.

Standard Ibis (below average of other Ibis), but we stayed in a smoking (curtains smelled) twin room. We asked to be moved to a double non-smoking but they weren’t able to accommodate us for the whole stay, so we were stuck there.
The cleanliness of the our room left a lot to be desired. There was rubbish under the beds when we arrived (and it stayed there throughout our stay).
The room and bathroom were small, but this is expected from an Ibis hotel anywhere in the world.
Breakfast was OK (standard Ibis), but the breakfast room also serves as the bar and it is in the Lobby. It was a smoking room (I don’t remember if it was really smoking allowed or if people ignored non-smoking signs and noone bothered to enforce it) and very irritating for us non-smokers.
Location was nice: 10 minutes walking from the train station and the centre. Some pubs in the nearby area. You can walk to the Quays to visit the historical dockyard, the retail outlet and its restaurants. Afterwards you can catch a taxi at night in front of the retail outlet to get back to the hotel.
Overall, we are used to Ibis hotels, and look for them for no-frills standard service, but this one (our first in the UK) was below what we have become used to. Not exactly a rewarding stay.

Railway Stations Portsmouth and Southsea Train Station is nearer the town than the portsmouth harbour stop.

Hot rocks - The best beach in Porstmouth Hot Rocks is a small pebble beach just on the left before old Portsmouth. You look for the old sea defenses and in one of the archways just before the public toilets there is an opening. This beach is great because you are sheltered from the wind and the rocks heat up nicely with the sun. The beach can get busy so make sure you get there early to get a good spot. Then enjoy the day by watching all the boats come and go while you relax in the warm sun.

Book a Bed And Breakfast! You will get much more for your money if you go to one of these wonderful little places.
