Historical Traveller Reviews of Express by Holiday Inn Poole Hotel

Good Value for Money

from Mossy4
After reading reviews of the hotel I was a bit worried but we telephoned the hotel in advance and asked to be placed in a quieter room and it was absolutely fine - no problems at all. The room was quite hot as it was a really sunny weekend but with the fan and the windows open it was fine especially as we just used the room as a base and was out exploring Poole itself. It was about a 15 minute walk to the Quay so no taxi needed just a good pair of shoes! Found some lovely bars and restaurants and had a fantastic weekend. We would go back there again.

Depends on what you want

from LOW34
I have stayed here twice for business. The hotel is clean, rooms are comfortable and have everything you need - except for air-conditioning. Although there is a fan in the rooms, they are very hot and if you are on the gound floor, you woudn't want to leave your window open.

Apart from this, the beds are comfortable and I enjoyed the large shower cubicle (no bath).

Breakfast is a continental buffet - cereal, toast, croissants etc. No cooked breakfast.

Be aware of two things -
1. One side of the hotel backs onto the railway line and rooms here are noisy (they are fine on the other side).
2. There are no amenities close by and it is a walk into town or to the quay - 15-20 minutes. The station is not close either, so a taxi is needed.

If you are on holiday this is probably not the best choice of hotel - but it is fine for business travellers or touring.

Sleepless night in Poole Avoid!

from bootooyoo
Awful stay the hotel is not located near the quay as shown on its website map it is in fact on the railway line near a flyover. Travel Inn at Holes Bay would be a much better choice.

Had no sleep at all rooms stiflingly hot an can't open window as road noisy. Doors banging all night and loud generator/ drill sounding randomly until 2 am. My son had a sofa bed which was broken and he was sleeping at a 30 degree angle head down!

Unbearable night absolutely no sleep. Don't even consider it there are much nicer places to stay in the area. The Thistle is right on the Quay and the Holes Bay overlooks the harbour both are cheaper.

Good, clean and value for money.

from UKJosie
Stayed for 2 nights - 2 adults and 2 children in one room. The room was spacious and there was plenty of room even with the sofa bed. Clean and bright.

A bit hot but a fan was provided.

Staff were very friendly, helpful and polite. As there is no restaurant the reception desk has a folder of food delivery outlets and it was easy to order a pizza to be delivered. There is a bar too.

The breakfast was fine for a continental breakfast - plenty of it.

For a stopover hotel it was more than adequate. We were staying in the area for a wedding so were not looking for a hotel with lots of facilities - just a bed for the night. For this it was all we needed.

Surprisingly good!

We stayed here for one night in January 2006. The room was very clean and well-equipped, modern and light and the bathroom was functional and quite roomy.
We had requested a non-smoking room on a high floor away from the lift and that's exactly what we got. It was quiet and we thankfully had a good nights rest.
The position of the hotel was a big disappointment though- inbetween a flyover and the bus station!
However it was good value and breakfast was included in the price.
Our only moan would be that the continental breakfast could be improved on.

Not upto scratch

No exhaust fans in bathroom , Heat in first floor corridors stifling , Location of room not as requested i.e not near a passage door or lift or ice machine etc. 2 half rolls of toilet paper, so little soap gel in squeeze bottle it took 2 hands to obtain sufficient to wash hands

Have had a long w/end in Poole
Great hotel and superb location - ideal for everything
Some very friendly and helpful staff and some (not many) not so (but always the way)
Good room and good breakfast/ facilities
Must comment that many ants visible close to the doors in the breakfast room - could easily be sorted out - but not nice to see ants crawling about on the floor and even on the tables close to doors and window

Friendly Hotel

1 night stay for Oasis

from Nicola_G
Myself and my sister stayed at this hotel for one night on the 23rd June 2004 as we were in poole to see Oasis in concert.

We arrived too early for check in so we expected just to dump our bags and have a look round Poole however the receptionist advised that our room was ready and we could check i early which was great. The room was clean and comfortable, it was a little hot but the hotel had already supplied a fan for us.

We found the bar prices to be reasonable and the recptionist nice and friendly when we were checking in and checking out.

This is a good hotel for an overnight visit and we would have no hesitation in staying there again.

Short of the mark.

from RedRick
After great satisfaction with a Holiday Inn Express elsewhere, we had high expectations which were swiftly dashed. The Receptionist was curt & unwelcoming to the point of rudeness. The room was somehow lesser than the sum of it's parts & looked comparitively dowdy. The breakfast buffet was missing some of the choices we were expecting. Poole is probably worth a visit just for it's good selection of pubs & restaurants, but has little else going for it.

Top Local Tips for Poole

Fireworks at the Quay Apparently they've been doing it for years - live bands and fireworks at the quayside (near Castle Street). Fireworks are at 10pm. Only in summer months (starts July?)

Poole Pottery outlet centre For those bargains from this fine pottery company. Good when the weather is a little inclement

Bike Night Visit the Marina on a Tuesday night and see hundreds of bikers riding up and down the front, all sizes, shapes and colours. Really good bike scene.
