Shocking Poor

Having reviewed the website and spoken to the owner on two occasions we were really looking forward to staying at the Estoril Hotel. However, starting with the barely lukewarm welcome (no eye contact, no smile, couldn’t even be bothered to offer to help my wife with her suitcase), thing got worse. Horrid little room, terrible old mattress on bed, wall paper falling off the wall, furniture that had been repaired with selotape !! and unbelievable, no shower. This left us with only a very slow filling bath with tepid water that was the colour of rust. My wife actually refused to wash in it. When confronted, the owner's response we one of indifference, immediately threatening me with 100% cancellation charges should we leave early, safe in the knowledge that we were unlikely to find anywhere else at such short notice, as he took pleasure in pointing out. Interestingly enough the web site says "excellent standards of accommodation, you will find tasteful furnishings and a warm and friendly atmosphere.". Nothing could be further from the truth. As a frequent business traveller both in the UK and abroad I am quite used to varying degrees of accommodate standards, however the Estoril Hotel is a classic example of somewhere with not enough competition, they don’t have to try hard as Penzance is very popular, so they don’t. We tried the breakfast once, food average, cutlery dirty, staff surly. It felt like they were doing us a favour by serving us. I would absolutely not recommend anyone staying here. This sort of establishment gives UK B&B's a bad name.

Lovely Stay

After visiting the Estoril Hotel I was amazed to read the other review on this site, I found the hotel perfect for my short stay in Penzance and will certainly recommend it to my friends. What suprised me was the comments about the strange smelling soap in the bathrooms instead of "goodies" I cant imagine what he meant by that. There were in fact perfectly lovely aroma therapy soaps contained in wall dispensers in the bathroom. As said previously, a perfect stay and will return when next in West Cornwall!

Don't Expect Heat or a Shower

Well, what can I say? Our room was at the top of the Hotel, there was no heat and it was below zero outside, when it did come on it did not heat the room and the pipes banged all night, we ended up sleeping in our clothes and with our coats for cover. The bedding was perfect if it was summer, but they should spend some money to update the old and tired bedding that is not adequate for winter months. The second disappointment is the bathroom, no shower, not even a hand-held, and no soaps, shampoos or other goodies. You have the use of this product that is hung on the wall and does not smell pleasant. Thank goodness we always bring our own. The best(worse) bit must have been the gentleman banging on the door on the floor below in the middle of the night. One last thing, don't expect to park your car near the property. The street is full and there is no parking available. We would recommend this Hotel to backpackers or anyone who just wants a place to flop down for the night.
