This is a fantastic old house which has been home to many a different person through the ages. It has a friendly atmosphere and the character is second to none; if only the walls could tell the stories of times gone by. The listed building has egyptian marble columns (from the Temple of Ephesus) just inside the front door and also a restaurant which has the most amazing wooden panelled walls; and yes these incorporate several very important items like Lord Nelsons sea chest and panels from York Minster and Worcester Cathedral. The cuisine is just exceptional as are the manners and attendance of the staff. The gardens are lovely and are fronted by a croquet green and Boulle pitch. The facilities also include a fitness suite and gorgeous swimming pool with sauna, steam room and hot tub. My wife and me stayed in the state room (101) and wow it's big. I will definately return; that's if we can get a room because of all the hotel rooms and the 37 chalets in the forest it is fully booked and difficult to get. I must disagree with the previous review in that the view from the room is just great and the china clay factory is away in the distance (some 4 miles). All of the furniture is made by Ducal and there is an abundance of power points. All rooms and the hotel common rooms are wireless friendly so you can log on where you want (within reason). Enjoy your stay; we did.

Such an utter let down and we stayed in their best 'state' room - it was a state too! If you look at their website and brochure it seems idyllic BUT the reality is an immaturely run place with poor motel service and grand pretensions. The 'manor' is grand at first sight (except perhaps the loud pop music coming from what we presumed was the kitchen next to the entrance) but this place has almost no walk able grounds except a small wooded area with lots of builders and the concrete 'sheds' for the (significant) time share contingent. The outlook from our well positioned room would have been great but for the view of the china clay factory billowing smoke 24/7. Our room was large and comfortable but lacking in any thought or character - for example the shower was practically impossible to get into as it was such a tiny cubicle with a huge tap unit, the trouser press and kettle were nowhere near a plug, the room clearly needed a sofa but there wasn't one, a chair was clearly broken, decor and fittings were cheap and bland - similar to a Travel Lodge (although I suspect Travel Lodge would spend more on wardrobes - these looked like they came from a car boot sale). The 'spa' has a postage stamp of a pool, broom cupboards for changing rooms, a couple more cupboards for the gym and treatment room plus, to be fair, a decent trio of Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. However, the 'spa' is only accessible by walking around the outside of the hotel. Hmmm To be honest though the real let down was the attitude and quality of the clearly manager less staff who despite an almost empty hotel and often outnumbering the guests simply didn't make our stay feel like it was connected with their wages. We ate 3 dinners and 3 breakfasts in the hotel and had to ask for the background music to be switched on 4 times (without the music it felt like eating in a silent order monastery). Service was slow and ill informed - smiles were non existent. Restaurants were cold - we both needed jumpers! Our room was sort of cleaned (when we arrived the look had remains of its last user and 2 cotton buds in it!) The chambermaid threw away my medication which I purposefully left on my bedside table and washed a glass to leave it dirtier than how it was found Their look paper was also rough narrow appalling cheap rubbish that would not have been used at a motorway service station. As always it is the little touches which make your stay - I was awoken at 6.30am on our first morning by the TV in the next room - it genuinely seemed to be our TV that was on - later it was obvious why - the TV next door was recessed behind our bed and thus separated by a couple of mm of wall... handy of you and your partner disagree which channel to watch? Perhaps the finest moment was when I spotted a couple of well used chunky candles in the bathroom and called reception to ask if I could borrow some matches - I was (impolitely) informed that the use of candles contravened health and safety rules (despite the fact that matches were freely available in the bar). I was all ready when we left to tell them all this but nobody was on reception when I went. I then waited and someone came and took my money but forgot to ask if we had enjoyed spending over £600 during our 3 day stay. Should I write and complain? Heaven's no they might offer us a return visit!
