Historical Traveller Reviews of The Tree Hotel
The Tree Hotel, Iffley, Oxford
from DavidMPVisiting couple from Nanaimo, British Columbia 18-22 December 2006
Great value base to explore Oxford
from MacsaBest onion bhajis ever
from groovynanNot very nice!
from farts_foThe hot water came eventually but kept going warm. The bathroom was cold.
I would not stay there again but the pub was OK with good food which came very quickly.
Friendly hotel
from SW_TravellerExcellent food in the restaurant with a choice of English, Tai and Indian. We had planned to eat out, but after sampling the restaurant on the first night we decided to eat there again.
Great place, great people
from NBwyeI travel a lot for work and can honestly say that the staff are exceptional: they really manage to make you feel at home: relaxed but on-hand with everything you could possibly want.
I'd recommend this place as a great stay for toursists or working people alike.
This is not a Hotel
from CowboyDreamerA wonderful find!
from WanderingMuseThe Tree
from LiquidMK2The service is one of the best reasons to stay at the Tree. The staff there is very personable, providing a feeling that is more like a home and less like a business. We chatted over several of our days in Oxford when we would come in and out of the hotel. And seeing as how it was our first time in England, the staff helped us figure our way around and eased our getting used to a new country. They keep the place with a very peaceful feel, and provide for a very relaxing home away from home.
Next in line, and not less than, is the food in the Annora. Of all the restaurants I enjoyed in Oxford, the Annora was the best by far. I personally recommend the Chicken Royale, it's amazing.
Even if for just a night and their incredible breakfast, the Tree Hotel is worth staying in.
Great location, and Food to die for
from Gandalf79I can strongly recommend the brief stroll through Iffley to the River Thames Lock, or the slightly longer walk (about 1.5m) along the well maintained banks of the River Thames into the centre of Oxford.
We have just returned from 5 nights at the hotel and were VERY impressed. The friendly welcome as soon as we walked in the door was a good start, and it just kept on, with the staff always being there with a friendly word when you wanted them, and becoming invisible when you didn't.
This hotel is currently undergoing some renovations, and decorators could be seen working on some of the outside windows during our stay. The room we stayed in was very clean and spacious, and due to the quiet location, we were able to keep the window open at night without background noise coming in. The decor in the room and the public areas was a little dated but is also on the schedule for upgrading in the near future
Main focus must be drawn to the restaurant. This part of the building has already had its decor upgraded, and it supports my praise for this facility as a restaurant in its own right, having rightly won awards in previous years.
I confess to exploring the menu in the restaurant on almost every night of our stay, trying new dishes from the Thai, Indian and English menus. They didn't let me down once! The quality of food and service was brilliant every time.
For the less greedy traveller, there is also a good variety of food available in the bar.
Conclusion - Decor in some rooms and public areas still need upgrading to be perfect, but otherwise this is going to be my stopping place for future visits to the area.
Top Local Tips for Oxford
Salter River Cruise We thoroughly enjoyed a boat trip down the Thames from Oxford to Abingdon, operated by Salter Brothers. Reserve a day for the trip; take the early boat south; spend a few hours in Abingdon; and take the afternoon boat back to Oxford.
Entertainment Check whether the Oxford Operatic Society are performing at the New Theatre. For an amateur group their standard is very high and theirvprices are not!
Don't take the car Don't even try to take the car into Oxford. The ancients roads weren't made for cars and the parking is extortionately expensive and very mimimal. Take the Park and Ride or public transport instead.
