Historical Traveller Reviews of Marlborough House Hotel

Very personal friendly hotel

from Nederlands_paar
We stayed at the Marlborough House hotel in a very spacious, yet beautiful room. The distance from the city centre was well compensated by the friendly and helpful staff (and the quiet surroundings). The staff even lent us their own umbrella when it rained so hard we couldn't possibly go out otherwise! The breakfast was good and hearty (we had the English Breakfast), and it was nice to see the convenient good qualityt tea and coffee and food in the room (especially when it rains so hard you don't feel like going out yet...bring an umbrella to Oxford!)
It is easy to reach the hotel by bus, and taxis aren't that expensive.

Terrific small hotel

from Pirateliz
We stayed for one night. It was terrific, with immaculate rooms and terrific customer service. The staff was really professional yet friendly and welcoming, they made us feel very special. The room was small for 4 people but well organized and comfortable. We had a family room, which meant two twin beds and a double. We had the full English breakfast delivered to our room and really enjoyed it.The hotel was a few miles from the city center, which meant a rather long walk into town but it was very close to pubs and restaurants, which the staff put on a map for us.

Pleasant experience

from Mona2
My husband and I stayed at this hotel over a weekend. The staff was friendly and helpful and the entire experience was hassle free and pleasant. The hotel is clean (especially the linen) though the room seemed a bit cramped but well equipped (including a small kitchenette). The flexibility of the staff to accomodate special requests is commendable (e.g., they provided my husband with necessary facilities, including a quiet room, to enable him get onto a conference call on Sunday afternoon after the scheduled check out time, for a marginal extra fee charged mainly at my husband's request). Although there is no restaurant / bar in the hotel, there are plenty of good places to eat / drink in the vicinity and we were also provided generous discount vouchers to dine at a good restaurant called Anoora at the Tree Hotel in Oxford (owned by the same group) which turned out to be a really great dining experience (we had Indian food though they seem to serve Thai and English food also).

Nice country Hotel

from MattyMate
This was a nice hotel with spacious rooms that were self-contained. Desk staff were friendly. Convenient location to excellent local pubs. Good breakfast delivered straight to the room. Well done!

Real Milk

from LindyLondon
Friendly and helpful staff. Room was fresh, spacious and really well equiped with all the usual including a microwave, minibar and fridge containing real milk for your tea! A good base for seeing Oxford. Would definately go there again.

Pleasantly Surprised

from JeanandNigel
Stayed just the one night and was pleasantly surprised. The room was spacious, comfortable and had a king size bed. Overall the room was spotlessly clean. The fridge was stocked with milk and orange juice which was complimentary. There was also a mini bar available. Nick who took our booking and greeted us on arrival was charming and helpful. At present the hotel does not have a dinning room but breakfast was served to our room at the arranged time and it nice to enjoy a private breakfast together. Planning permission has now been granted for an extention for a dinning room plus additional accommodation. The hotel is situated on a bus route taking approximately 10 minutes to travel into town. We would most definitely return to the Marlborough House.

Dear Jean & Nigel,

Thank you for your review. We are really happy that you enjoyed your stay with us and we are looking forward to welcome you again at the MArlborough House when you visit Oxford in near future.

Very good rooms

from MaurizioP
The staff were particularly kind and the rooms were really comfortable. The breakfast service could probably be improved, but that's a matter of taste

Mixed

from Pouncer-7
The staff were lovely, all very helpful and friendly. The room was very good, comfortable beds, good size room, all very clean. However, there was no mini bar and no radio as stated in all descriptions.
Unfortunately breakfast was a bit of a let down. Stale croissants, tinned grapefruit, soggy toast, no marmalade.

Very Disappointing

from 3Dee
We stayed in the Marlborough House Hotel on a short break to Oxford in May 2006. We chose the hotel because of the many positive reviews on Trip Advisor, but were very disappointed with what we found. It's not a hotel, but a B&B, it's a very long walk from the city centre and you really need to take a bus into the town. The price we paid was unbelievably high for what is on offer. The room we had was very dated, the bed sagged in the middle and was not comfortable. The kitchenette gave it a bedsit like feel and the room was noisy from the busy road outside. We originally planned to stay for two nights, but checked out after one and spent an excellent night in the highly recommended Malmaison in the city centre.

a very pleasant stay

from alexandrenina
I stayed at Marlborough Guest House for quite a long period, from September to December 2006. Being in Oxford on business for 3 months, my initial intention was to let a small flat at the city center. But I soon realized it was a very difficult, if not impossible task to find short-term accommodation in a city like Oxford, unless you have connections with one of the University Colleges and book very much in advance.

I then negotiated a reduced price with the hotel’s owner and decided to stay for the whole period in the place I had intended to stay for just one week. Therefore, I had the opportunity of getting to know the hotel in all its details. In general, I do recommend the house. The place is clean and slightly sophisticated, as compared to other hotels of similar prices in the city. You won’t find anything better in this category. Rooms are spacious and comfortable – they all have a mini-kitchenette, with basic utilities and some complimentary food items in the fridge everyday. A very decent breakfast is served in the rooms, usually by a smiling and cheerful girl from Brazil. The staff, composed mainly of Indian and Brazilian people (the exception being a Croatian girl at the reception) are very hospitable, friendly and helpful, always willing to assist you in everything you need.

One aspect I did not enjoy very much was the hotel’s location, a little bit far from the city center. There are good shops at Summertown, but, in any event, you would have to walk for around 10-15 minutes to get there. To get to the city center, you would either have to walk for 40 minutes or take a 10-minute bus ride. You can catch buses at a stop located just in front of the hotel – but they do not run very often at Woodstock Road. You’d better walk for 5 minutes and catch them at Banbury Road, especially if you are in a hurry or/and need them late in the night. Of course, this difficulty would not apply if you have your own car – they have a spacious and safe parking area for free. The other aspect I complained a lot referred to the wireless internet service. Even though it is offered free of charges, it seldom worked properly during the first two months of my stay. They were finally able to fix it in the third month, but still I would not recommend it if you really need to work on the internet on a daily basis from the hotel, like I did.

All in all, I do recommend the hotel. They combine good services and a nice, clean and spacious environment with very reasonable rates.
