What a hole!!
from A TripAdvisor Member
Well what an adventure, booked the hotel via Roomrez over 3 weeks ago, got to the hotel and they had no record of our booking, provided them with booking forms that i printed off and finally got a room. Went to room and it was nice and big, if not a little dirty and dingy, bed was not much bigger than a single even though was supposed to be a double. We went out for the night, came back and none of the lights in our room would work, went to reception and were told at 1030pm we would have to move rooms!! Got "upgraded" to a bigger room with the same sized bed but at least it had 4 posts to it!! Room was red hot and had to sleep with the windows open, not great when you in the middle of Newcastle! Generally staff were unhelpful and disinterested, only plus sign was Natalie who was very helpful. Got a refund off her for the inconvienience of having to change rooms, but still not happy, dont stay in this place unless you really want an awful weekend in a dive of a hotel!!!
booked 4 - stayed 1

Room was small, old, noisy from station and the bed must have been installed on the day the hotel was built.
We pre-booked online and upon arrival found that the booking had not registered.....even though we had paid upfront. We did eventually get a refund from hotels.
Absolutely horrid service to boot !

Good if you like train noise

We had problems sleeping as you could hear every train and station announcement (with windows closed! ) even good red wine couldn’t kill it. If you have to use it I suggest you request front facing rooms!
Good spot

After reading some of the previous reviews, was definitely wary of staying here.
The urine in the lifts was always fresh from the night before, great location for watching the locals batter the hell out of each other in the bar opposite.
Staff were friendly and helpful but didn't like the idea of having to pay £35 for getting a bird back to your room. Breakfast was above average. The rooms were below par but to be expected as we were a stag party.
If you're in Newcastle I would certainly go to Brough Park for the Greyhounds, it reminds you why the North / South divide exists.
Overall great location would certainly stay again.

convenience at a price
from empaul
Agent had seen poor review, but noted that "refurbishing" had been done and we wanted convenience to train with our luggage. Staff was very pleasant and helpful--but needed as first room had steps after we were on the correct floor, and the TV had no remote so we had to change rooms(rather than get a remote)! Second room was on lift level, that was better, but light over bathroom mirror was out(replacement bulb, not the answer) and regular light not adequate for shaving. Luckily it was sunny and that made shaving less hazardous. Shocking, to hang towel on bar and have the thing fall apart! Had we had better experience with the London Victoria Thistle last year, we might have booked the Thistle across the street.

Stayed for 3 nights in febuary in a double room. The foyer was impressive and liked having a gym, leisure cemtre available at no extra cost. Parking was great as it was no extra charge and right in the middle of town. Room was ok but needed a little improvement however bed was good and i slept well.
I enjoyed my stay mainly because of the location and would probably go back.

Now I know what it was like to live through the war

Well - have to agree with the others. The foyer is great - everything else dire. My room was so seedy, I expected Leonard Rossiter to appear to ask for rent. Kind of room in which I could imagine some horrible murder taking place. The decor is dreadful, fittings dirty, no hot water in the morning. The steak I ordered through room service inedible, the wine attrocious. The toilet dripped all night, wake-up call never came. I stay in hotels all over the world (many half the price of this one) I have never experienced such a ghastly place. Don't touch this place!

We recently stayed midweek in the Royal Station hotel for one night. The enterance foyer was very impressive with a huge crystal chandlier dominating the surroundings. This looks good I thought and proceeeded up the stairs following our check-in with effecient if not over friendly staff. As we reached the first floor it became apparent that a total lack of maintenance abounded. Bannisters, doors, and most other wooodwork had not seen a paint brush for a long time. The single rooms( more like prison cells) were pityfully small, dark and musty with very outdated furniture and fittings. On the positive side there is a leisure centre with a small gym, small pool, sauna etc. Maybe the owners have started to invest in this hotel? However I still cannot recommend this hotel to anybody.
Top Local Tips for Newcastle
Dining Food is of but loads of good restaurants close by I would reccomend China town
train the hotel is just yards from the station
Visiting on weekends If you want to have quiet evenings in Newcastle Upon Tyne, don't book in either on Friday night or Saturday night, because Newcastle is the leading city for stag and hen parties, and these all seem to occur on Friday night or Saturday night.

My attempts to book direct with the agreed discounted tariff failed miserably due to jobsworths.
