Historical Traveller Reviews of Quality Hotel Newcastle upon Tyne

from DrLoo
An old and tattered hotel sitting atop of a partially abondoned mall in Newcastle. I booked this hotel online for one night in Newcastle. The hotel website showed a nice entrance and nice looking rooms. Online photos were deceiving! The hotel entrance was not the one shown online and in fact the entrance was only an unmarked set of stairs heading up off the street near downtown Newcastle. There was no lift (elevator) and I had to call the hotel from the street to have someone come down to help me carry my luggage up the two flights of dirty and worn carpeted stairs. At the top of the stairs you have to go through a maze of unmarked doors and empty rooms to reach the reception area. The hotel sits on the upper floors of uncared for mall with many vacant store fronts. Receptionists were polite but room was small, old, and in need of work -- dirty carpet, torn bed skirt, and mold in shower!! The worst part was the noise -- the room I had on the 5th floor over looked the street which was jammed with drunk college students until 4 am. If possible choose another place to stay!

this is a very tired run down hotel which is bearly visible from the street. I would not stay here again the food was all processed and not freshly cooked and certainly not cheap for what you got.

Night in hell

from Suzie1
What a dump of a hotel. Couldn't find it , had to get directions from two policemen. Staff were very unpleasant, shabby horrible decor. The room was so unbearably hot you could not sleep.
Bar was closed at 11.50 pm. Could not get in from the street as the door has to be opened by a night porter. Wish I had read reviews on this site before i booked. Be warned do not book this hotel.

for stag/hen partys only!!

from missile
dear me! do not stay here if you want to actually use it for what its for - sleeping!! unless as mentioned above, you are with a stag/hen party and hopefully quite drunk so that you are helped by the alcohol! it was simply so noisy - seagulls (? - 8 miles form coast!!), people on the streets below til at least 5am and then the street cleaners, that i didnt get a minutes sleep! honest! and i dont normally have a problem getting to sleep! it is also very shabby as if the no-one cares about the hotel at all ,which is quite unacceptable in this day and age! no wonder we could get a room so last minute! yes, it is very central so thats handy, but TOO central in my opinion!

Central = noisy

from torero94
Hotel was central to bars/clubs on Newgate street, making it easy to return after a night out. But this also causes problems with sleep as there is no A/C, and having open windows so close to clubs makes for a lot of noise.
Rooms were OK, mine (406) was probably one of the more recently renovated ones. No funny smells or stains. Staff was OK.
My biggest problem with the place (aside from the noise) was finding it. No sign on the street. Just a glass door with the Quality Inn logo etched in the glass (no color). Walked by it 3 times without noticing it, as it's just a door wedged between a club and a store. Also had to walk up stairs and through a bunch of corridors before reaching the lobby.
Decent for the price.

Grim. To be avoided.

What a grim place. You get feeling that this is not the sort of hotel where the management care too much about guests returning and I would expect few would. Tired and worn out this hotel has little to attract anyone except perhaps hen or stags parties not wanting to stagger too far back from the city centre bars. The smell was dreadful and I would suggest anyone planning to stay here has a serious rethink.

For your own sake do not stay at this hotel. It is a dump

I stayed for one night at this hotel, whilst on business in Newcastle. The only good thing to say is that the staff were helpful. The hotel is shabby, mould on windows, everywhere is dirty, beds are falling apart. The overcovers on the beds are ingrained with dirt. I do not know when the hotel was built, but it needs a complete overhall. Central location, but if you thinking of stopping in Newcastle, I would advise you do not stop here.

Quality by name, Quality by nature!!

I stayed there last year, the place was shabby looking, smelly. But when i stayed there in March 06 there has been a dramatic change, rooms were lovely and clean. The hotel is currently being refurbished but did not cause me any disturbence. House keepers were very friendly and helpful.
Only downfall is that the receptionist needs to cheer up to welcome guests as she is first point of contact and needs to set a good example of the hotel.
Food is an improvement from last year, but is a bit chaotic at breakfast times i.e not enough crockery out.

good location, but ....

from Berends
The location of this hotel is perfect, although a bit hard to find, No big sign on Newgate Street, just a sign on the door.
I found myself sleeping on the springs in the bed. The only fresh food at breakfast were the croissants and baked eggs. The rest came out of jars, tins, cartons, etc. The baked patatoes were from the same oil the chips were baked in the evening before. We found chips with the patatoes. We had one dinner which all came from the freezer; fish (froozen) and chips, with mussy peas (from a tin) and beef with yorkshire puddings (from the freezer as well, which made them taste like rubber) for £ 9,95 is not worth it at all.
The staff were very friendly.

good location the only quality

Excellent location..but we wished we had read the reviews previously left on this website. Room 101 was our allocated slot, for 3 nights, and can only agree with the previous review highlighting its shabbiness. If it wasn't so late when we checked in (midnight) after a long day, and our busy schedule away from the hotel during the day, i would have asked to be moved. The bathroom wasn't particularly clean and the room and hotel in general had a shabby look. I got a good deal 42 quid a night b and b through Hotelshop which was much cheaper that the tariffs quoted on the hotel page, but still feel i only got what i paid for. Nice breakfast with good service, in a just ok restaurant on the top floor. Quality?......mmmm...not really!

The Bridges My boys were fascinated by Tyne Bridge and Millenium bridge. We went on a walk across Tyne bridge, along the Quayside and across Millenium bridge, They took loads of photos and thought this was one of the best parts of their trip.
