food and rooms a disappointmentfrom A TripAdvisor Member
Although I've picked some faults with the place, the wedding as a whole was lovely and the staff were impeccable. Everybody had a lovely day and despite the faults the bride and groom were made to feel very special and the day ran smoothly and according to plan
Disappointing weekend stayfrom Cat4158
We had reserved a table in the restaurant - we've eaten there before and had previously enjoyed the experience. This particular weekend the service was very poor. We waited twenty minutes, after being seated at the table, for our first course and then a further forty minutes for our main course. Our wine glasses were constantly refilled but we had to ask several times for water. Perhaps it was hoped that we would order more wine! We decided not to order desserts after waiting for thirty minutes for someone to take our order. The food we received was equally disappointing - incorrect order which had to be sent back, steak underdone and lamb that was tough. We mentioned it to the assitant restaurant manager but he seemed unconcerned and only said that he would tell the chef.
Our experience at breakfast wasn't much better. When we sat down the staff were very quick to tell us how busy they were that weekend. The tea we ordered with our breakfast failed to arrive - we asked again and were brought coffee - we tried again but, having already finished our meal decided to give up and make a cup in our room.
I don't expect to stay at Matfen Hall again. The service was very poor and the response to our complaints was very disappointing.
needs to concentrate on getting the basics rightfrom SherlockT
The spa is very good but smaller than we had expected - the "salt grotto" only seats 3 (and was cold and dissappointing), the sauna half a dozen and so on and there isn't masses of room around the pool. Despite being new the door on the steam room was broken, letting steam out and cold air in, and there were problems with the jacuzzi.
We ate in the Library and Print Room restaurant from the a la carte menu. This has an excellent reputation locally and we had been very impressed when dining here previously. It is possible we caught them on a bad night because the food and particularly the service were not up to the mark. "Sorry for the delay" seemed to be the mantra for the dining room staff. Several tables complained including the couples on either side of us - one of whom eventualy gave up and left after trying, and failing, to order deserts. No one seemed to have a grip on the dining room and the staff seemed more interested in chatting with diners than getting the service right. Ordering was slow, finished with plates were left on tables for far too long, the gap between courses became extended and it was difficult to attract attention for basic things like topping water up, ordering desert etc etc.
Apart from the crab timbale starter the food was overly rich and heavy and lacked any delicacy or subtlety. Maybe an off night maybe the result of recently losing their acclaimed head chef.
The wine list contained an odd selection but included many wines in the £15 - £20 bracket and the South African Chenin Blanc we ordered was superb value for money.
Service at breakfast was equally hit and miss although the food itself was better.
Overall we had mixed feelings - the room was excellent, the spa good but dinner a real let down and certainly well below the standards we have enjoyed previously at Matfen
s not get carried away....from WilmslowTravelMan
Service varied, one day very good, attentive, friendly, the other day very cold. I was assured the Full English was grilled, but it was clearly fried as it was greasy on the whole. Best sauna/steam Room I have ever been in.
Would I go back? maybe.... but I'd have a good look around the area for something else first.

Great place to relaxfrom jimmcc09
Highlights - being served breakfast by Stephanie with her bright bubbly personality, a great start to any day - the garlic and cheese bread rolls at dinner - and the creme brulee is to die for.
Watchouts - executive rooms are well appointed, but those in the new wing are accessed along a corridor with low exposed beams that you need to be wary of if you're over 5ft 6in - the spa health salon does not keep a few slots for hotel guests each day and therefore gets fully booked by locals days in advance, so if you want to indulge in a massage you need to book it when you book your room.
A Wonderful Place to Relax in Luxuryfrom KentWoman
The rooms are beautiful and comfortable, some are exceptionally well appointed with fantastic, modern bathrooms and enourmous beds.
The food is excellent and the service seamless, although never too stuffy or formal.
This is one of the best hotels we have stayed in during the past few years.
perfect for a summer weddingfrom A TripAdvisor Member
Amazing place with fantastic servicefrom DarcyUk
The next day we didn't want to leave!! The hotel arranged for us to taste our wedding breakfast in the evening (complimentary) and when we booked the room they upgraded us when they found out we were getting married there. The whole experience was out of this world. For a country house hotel you might expect the ambience to be pretentious and snobby but it was the exact opposite! The staff couldn't do enough for us and we both felt totally relaxed and at home. The bedrooms are superb (we were upgraded to a premier suite which is huge with the biggest bed ever seen, living area and huge bathroom - total luxury.
The food and wine are superb and all in a cosy, luxurious atmosphere. I can't wait for the wedding day now and would thoroughly recommend Matfen Hall. In May 2004 they're opening a health club, so along with the Golf Course (PGA) there will be even more ways to relax.
