Luxury boutique hotel in the New Forest, an unexpected, enormous pleasure

Stayed here last week, a luxury boutique hotel near Southampton on the edge of the New Forest. I was actually visiting Southampton but didn't want to stay in the city and a boutique hotel only 15 – 20 minutes drive from the centre with the New Forest on my doorstep sounded the perfect alternative. I drove into the car park behind a new Bentley Continental which the driver had difficulty parking…couldn't resist a chuckle. The welcome was very friendly and efficient. I was taken to my room which, though quite small, was very stylish with its own large balcony complete with two loungers, two chairs and a table. I was able to use my laptop out there before dinner (free wireless) and went out to do my yoga exercises in the morning! The rooms here even have surround sound with speakers in the ceiling, great for watching Wimbledon, and espresso machines. However, the laptop safe was locked.

In the restaurant, I was invited to enjoy a recommended glass of wine with each course. What a good idea, especially as I was alone and the evening was all about me! The Head Sommelier, Laura Rhys, who'd just won the title ‘Young Sommelier of the Year' looked after me so well, I have to tell you about it. I ordered the Gazpacho and she recommended a glass of Manzanilla Pasada. This I realized on tasting, to my surprise, was a sherry, dry, fresh and excellent. I then had the Brill with Pea Puree, Leeks and Anchovy Dressing, and Laura recommended a glass of Louro do Bollo, an excellent Spanish white from, I was told, the Godello grape. Finally, I ordered a blackcurrant sorbet and with it came a delicious Dolc Mataro, Alta Alella. I'm not a wine buff so, needless to say, I had never heard of any of these wines. (She wrote the names down for me). The evening was therefore an enjoyable education without any embarrassment on my part.

Hotel TerraVina is very much a wine hotel but the restaurant has an energy to it that you don't normally find in hotel restaurants. Everyone seemed to have so much to say to one another, it was like being in Italy. There was a table of business people who were a bit loud but no-one seemed to mind. (The Bentley owner did all the talking at his table and the woman he was with uttered barely a word)

I recommend it without reservation, especially if you're looking for a hotel near Southampton. I meant to write this three weeks ago but forgot. Then on Sunday, I saw a rave review in the Mail on Sunday.

visit the forest but also Went to the Arthur Hillier gardens nearby - absolutely fantastic shrubs and plants of all sorts and beautiful trees , quite a large area and very unexpectedly lovely visit also the Mottisfont Abbey and gardens again a beautiful place a lovely old house in a perfectly grand setting
