Historical Traveller Reviews of Velvet Hotel

ve stayed in!

from crazyjohn80
Having had to change the dates of our trip a couple of times we were happy to arrive on a Friday night with everything booked correctly. But then we were even happier to be told at check-in that we were staying in room 406....one of the penthouses!

We were escourted up to the room and offered any assistance that we needed throughout our stay. A few moments later another employee brought milk and sugar for the tea and coffee and lemon and biscuits to compliment the minibar. The room itself was amazing. On the ground floor (yes ground floor, there are two in the penthouses!) was a long corner sofa set against exposed brick facing an LG DVD and TV which was mounted on the wall. There was a black coffee table and another table with push under chairs towards the back of the room which offered a good space away from the TV for any room service or maybe breakfast! Adjacent was an office space with LG cd player which looked of a top quality. The minibar was well stocked and not too expensive and there was storage space if you didn't want to ruin the aura of the room with luggage. The bathroom (downstairs) had a free standing bath as well as a separate shower and there was Burts Bees (think I've got that right) toiletries which my lady loved!

Milk chocolate coloured carpeted stairs led from the front room up to the bedroom. The bed itself was lush and a good king size. There was good wardrope space and a separte toilet and sink which was lit up in neon blue. The bedroom came complete with wall plasma TV and overlooked the second part of the front room. The whole penthouse was lit up by natural light from the skylights and you could let in fresh air via the remote control to open the windows.

Having been to Velvet before (a couple of times for food, many times for drinks) I can say that the bar (we had a few drinks in the evening - such a stylish bar although it's the first time I've been when it's not been dark outside and it felt strange haha. That's what happens when you start your night in a bar you normally end it in :p) and the restaurant (which we used for breakfast which was well tasty) slotted seamlessly in to the Velvet hotel experience. I could imagine going for the first time and thinking to myself that if I was in that position I'd be mightily impressed how well everything connected with each other. You really got a sense of that with the staff as well. They knew what Velvet was about and even the guys we got chatting to who had recently joined appeared to be loving their work.

Having experienced each aspect separately and now as a whole I couldn't think of a better place to stay in Manchester and indeed, as a seasoned traveller, the room was the best I've ever stayed in. I'LL BE BACK, KILLIAN.

Oh My...... This place should be available on the NHS... the nation would be cured of depression

from Poppy1103
I stayed with my sister for her birthday and the whole experience was a delight... the whole experience from the extremely helpful, warm and accommodating approach on the phone when booking (and my isn't THAT a rarity!), the delightful friendly welcome, the beautiful "there's nothing they haven't thought of" kind of room with several unexpected surprises of the genteel and marvellously old school british variety (BIG fluffy towels, milk in a jug... Yes! a jug!), things to make you smile like the statue and big fat candle ready to go on the balcony and the rubber duck in the understatedly amazing bathroom and the bed was just divine, a blissful cocoon of soft, sleep inducing luxury. Despite being above the "sociable" canal street on a Friday night, the sound proofing is great, dulling the noise of revellers below to make it nothing more than a helpful dream accompaniment. There was nothing, I repeat nothing, that disappointed about this place. I'm almost reluctant to write this in case it becomes so popular I can no longer get in - incidently, if ever there was an example of good value for money this is it... I haven't even mentioned the breakfast, the menu was perfect, imaginative and comprehensive and the service was brilliant...marvellously manchester low-key but friendly and efficient. I've been having withdrawal symptoms all week....

You wont find better!

My partner and I stayed at Velvet to celebrate our 5 year anniversary and we can say with complete honesty that we had the most wonderful 24hours at this decadent hotel. From the moment we arrived we were warmly welcomed with tea and biscuits and shown around room 24, 'the one with the big gothic bed and a huge bath - you can easily fit 2 people in!'. An even bigger surprise was that they remembered the occassion we had booked for and delivered 2 glasses of bubbly, some strawberrys and a bottle of bubble bath to help us celebrate! This fantastic sevice continued throughout our stay, on our return back from dinner our room had been made up-bed turned down, slippers at the end of the bed, fruit and milk left in the fridge, 'smooth' radio playing softly in the background. The staff were wonderful, everyone was friendly and attentive. It goes without saying that the breakfast was equally memorable with an enormous plate of smoked saImon and scrambled eggs for me and the vegetarian breakfast for my partner..but then I have never had a bad meal in Velvet restaurant in the many years it has been opened. I have stayed at another so called boutique hotel in Manchester/suburbs - and been absolutely appalled at their service to the point of actually writing a written complaint (to which I did not even get a reply). Even service at larger Manchester luxury hotels wasnt as good as the service we experienced at Velvet. If its a decadent and luxury hotel you want with excellent service dont bother looking anywhere else, it wont come close to this newest addition to Canal Street. Im planning a return asap!

Individual style - one of a kind

from Arachnae
I have been a customer of Velvet Restaurant and Bar for many years and when they opened the hotel, even though I live close to Manchester, I had a city centre meeting so I booked a room to experience this individually styled hotel.

Apart from the quality of fittings, fabulously comfortable beds and numerous touches that set this hotel well above the norm, the bar and restaurant is devoid of the normal cold, clinical feel one gets in most hotels and that is a big bonus for the solo traveller.

For those that don't know, Canal Street is Manchester's gay village. However this part of the Street is very 'mixed' - don't be put off - this hotel is not 'gay' - it caters for everyone.

I do not usually take home the toiletries that hotels provide but the complimentary (and extensive) Burts Bees products provided were too good to resist.

Tea and coffee making facilities are provided, and the offering includes chocolate, and selection of teas. The welcome tray was a fab touch and although I note someone else said they found the mini bar expensive, I didn't.

In summary, the hotel is truly stunning and I spent more time in the room than I would usually do when staying in a hotel, simply to relax and luxuriate. I recommend Velvet wholeheartedly; my sister will visit in the next month and rather than stay in my apartment, I'm booking her into Velvet as a special treat.

An excellent night

From the moment I arrived I was made to feel very welcome. Service was polished and very slick from the welcome tray which was delivered after I was shown to my room to the treats on turn-down. There were plenty of quirky touches to make you feel spoiled.

The room was a good size and fabulously decorated with a large, carved, gothic bed and chandeliers. Huge bathroom with a double bath. I had one of the most comfortable nights sleep I've had in a hotel.

I chose to have breakfast the next morning in the restaurant (could have had it in the room) and there was a great selection, well beyond the usual fry-up. In the restaurant there also seemed to be non-residents having breakfast which gave it a bit more atmosphere than you normally get in a hotel.

I was staying on business and was looking for somewhere close to the station. It was far and away better than anywhere I've stayed for a similar price and I felt spoiled compared to the usual business-trip hotels I've stayed in. Given the service and location (and the rooms which I think are all different) I could also see myself staying for a night out.

WOW !!! Fantastic new hotel , Great Location, Amazing Rooms, Great welcome and service.

You have got to stay at the Velvet. All the 19 rooms are individually decorated. We were shown a couple of rooms on arrival to choose from, We opted for room 16 which was only finished that day and we were the first to stay, amazing bed. good outlook onto Canal Street. Lovely big bathroom, Loads of Berts Bees toiletries , Fluffy bathrobes and slippers, even a Velvet rubber duck.
Complimentary tray of tea and coffee with bicuits , fruit and ice bucket on arrival great touch so was the turn down service on our return with bars of chocolate left on our pillows.
We ate at the Velvet restraunt which was excellent but look out for the happy hour menu we did not seeit till after we ordered. Word of warning !!! they have some risque statues so mind your head when leaving your table !!!
The Velvet has a good offer till end of may £115 including a great breakfast which is great value for money
Cant wait for our return dont think we will be staying anywhere else in Manchester.
If your are travelling by car there is a small car park at the rear of the hotel which costs £16 for 24 Hours same as NCP BUT NEARER.

Tasteful decor professional and friendly service with a can do attitude

from JFRManchester
With every room individually designed to be that little bit different, Velvet is the new kid on the block, complimentary soft drinks on arrival professional and attentive staff and a sumptuous decor, all this in the heart of the village, a stones throw from Piccadilly station. A must for the discerning visitor.

Absolutely fabulous

from tarawells
I was looking forward to staying at Velvet Hotel on its opening night and I was not disapointed. The greeting at the door and the service at reception made me feel like a member of the family. The decor from entrance to exit is fantastic and reflects a great deal of dedication and care to detail. Whereas some botique hotels offer individual rooms, Velvet delivers!!! Each room is a work of art. The beauty of the beds and the furnishings all blended into a perfect afternoon, evening, night and wake-up in the morning. The bathroom was stunning with the most comfortable robes and towels. Great care has also gone into the choice of bath products (loved them!). The evening turn-down service was wonderful with some chocolate and a nice pair of slippers. I will be back here as often as I can. Truly wonderful!!!

cannot heap enough praise on this amazing new hotel; beautiful individual rooms, in the most fantastic location for city centre Manchester; total luxury from the first step through the door.
Extremely helpful staff, Louise, made our stay special and we felt very welcome, stayed in room 34 with the biggest bath we have ever seen!
Although we only live locally to this hotel , we will definitely use it again for that special occasion.
If anyone reading this is looking for a hotel for that extra special occasion then this is it; we found it by accident and had the most fantastic stay.
Breakfast was fantastic served in the luxurious restaurant in the basement; just thinking of an excuse to go and stay again!!!! Loved it !!

Very easy to find from Picadilly Station, within walking distance, even with a suitcase, literally 3 minutes away!
Reception staff very friendly & helpful, showed us to our room, check in very quick. Room outstanding, with those "added touches" that make your stay something special. The decor was fantastic, beds very comfy, chandelier to die for, mini bar a bit pricey, bathrobes you want to take home with you. Just a wonderful experience.
Restaurant & Bar staff only too helpful, lovely food.
Breakfast in the morning was fab, even extended their opening for us on the Saturday. Once again the staff were lovely, all very interested on your thoughts of the place.]
Would definately stay again, but in a different room, as they are all decorated differently.
Only bad point is that we could hear the TV from the next room early in the morning, and also because we were at the back of the hotel we also got the noise from the glass bottles being emptied by the bar's along Canal street.
