Arrived 11pm,having telephoned earlier to warn of late arrival; found hotel overbooked HOWEVER reception staff very helpful and booked us in for the night at the 4 star Renaissance Hotel next door - ok by me! Paid for by Travelodge. Absolutely lovely hotel. Free breakfast also at Travelodge next morning, good breakfast though rooms still not ready. Going to football so went shopping up town returning to find only one room available (was party of 4, 2 rooms booked.) Thought if we pushed it we could get another night at the Renaissance Hotel but no such luck, somehow they found a second room and we checked in. What a contrast! Cheap & not that cheerful BUT the bed was clean & comfy, tea & coffee available, clean towels but no frills as explained in the literature. Got exactly what we paid for and free breakfast both mornings. Can't fault the reception staff who were always friendly & helpful

Despite booking months in advance and friends booking subsequently being in decent rooms,I was allocated a basement dungeon.Downstairs,past hammering workmen and the smell of paint,opened the door to stygian darkness and the non working main light.Switched on the bathroom light to find diry,wet towels in bath,hair and scum in washbasin,unemptied sanitary bin and-yuck-an unflushed loo. Opened the windows in bedroom to get rid of smell and found unmade bed with dubious stained sheets,overflowing waste bin and dirty cups.While the habits of the previous occupant-including cigarette ends in a non smoking hotel--are not the fault of the management,a clean room is not too much to ask.The light patches on the wall(still with hooks in)showed just how murky the room itself was.I politely told reception who said there were no other rooms available-fair enough,it's a busy hotel-but if I temporarily vacated the room,it would be cleaned.Three hours later,after wandering around Manchester,I returned to find everything exactly the same.Different receptionist,who didn't understand English,however managed to say she knew nothing about it,there were no cleaners available and I could cancel my reservation.At 8pm,this was not an option as I was tired from travelling and had an appointment at 9pm.It took an exhausting half hour before she realised I was not going to go and someone was eventually sent to give my room a lick and polish. Next morning,no apology,nothing.
