Good location, close to Piccadilly station and central attractions, but room furniture is well worn and in need of replacing e.g. the couch in our room had odd cushions not even the same color and to be honest looked flee ridden. This hotel is ideal for a place to party and trash the room because nobody would notice, and if you had to replace any furniture you would only need to go to a car boot for similar if not better.

Poor Quality!

Stayed at the Place for 4 weeks in one of their "penthouses".
On arrival the apartment was filthy it smelt musty and there was a generous layer of dust everywhere,despite assurances that it had been thoroughly cleaned!
The communal areas,corridors,elevators and the"exclusive glass elevator"for the penthouses were also filthy.
The various publications enthuse about the fabulous city views,thats if you can see through years of grime that obscured the windows.
The television was old,no fuctioning remote control and constant ghosting on all channels.
The washer/dryer was pitiful,it could take upto 5hrs to complete a full cycle, and everytime flooded the bath-tub in the main bathroom with dirty water leaving a constant film of silt all over it,it took 4 complaints and 3 weeks before this problem was rectified.
As expressed in other reviews the staff were dim-witted and the concept of hotel service was alien to them,it was only on leaving that I discovered that Opal Properties the management company specialize in student lets,this explains a lot!
All this came at the less than reasonable sum of $3500 with a $3700 deposit against damage considering that the apartment was virtually bear and that all crockery,bedding etc had to be provided by ourselves was laughable.
If looking for a short-term let at less than reasonable price give The Place Manchester a miss.We had previously stayed at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester where the service and standards were excellent. I suggest that the team from The Place check it out and discover how a world-class operation works!

I am writing in response to the comments made by A TripAdvisor Member New York on October 27, 2004. The Place has 108 apartments, the majority of which are hotel apartments. These are fully furnished and serviced and provide everything you would expect from a hotel and more. The remaining apartments are rental apartments which have basic furnishings and no service. The gentlemen from New York came to The Place looking for rental accommodation and were shown a rental apartment. All aspects of the tenancy were communicated to them, including what was and was not included. They were informed of the deposit and rental costs and agreed to take the apartment for 1-2 months. A tenancy agreement was signed by the gentlemen to confirm this. As no AV equipment is provided for tenancies we agreed to loan a TV to the gentlemen as a favour.
When the gentlemen moved in they were asked if everything was to their satisfaction and they advised us that it was.
I am shocked and concerned that staff at The Place have been described as dim-witted when we take pride in our service and do everything possible to make all our guests feel at home.
In response to the comment about the Lowry, I must again stress that there is a difference between hotel and rental accommodation at The Place. If the gentlemen had requested hotel accommodation they would have been showed hotel accommodation, as it is, they requested rental accommodation and that is what they were shown and signed an agreement for, therefore, there was no daily maid service as in the hotel accommodation although if requested, this could have been arranged. I do hope that their review will not discourage people from staying at The Place Hotel as their review does not reflect hotel accommodation.

I am currently staying in this hotel on business and can't even wait to get home to rave about it.... I read some of the other reviews and there are some valid points. Yes, some of the staff are much friendlier than others, some apartments (I have so far stayed in 4-all different grades) have had a musty smoky smell, but just open the window!! there are plenty of them.
I am in a 2-bed exec apartment (just below the penthouse) but only paid for a standard 2 bed (free upgrade) It is very very spacious, warm and trendy and really is a home from home!!... It's in a superb location... close to the buzz of canal street and chinatown (both virtually on your doorstep) and all the fab shopping Manchester has to offer.. The apartments are fitted to a high spec with all mod cons (dishwasher/sky TV/washing/drying machine etc etc) and the rooms (even bathrooms) are huge.. The maids are salt of the earth and will do anything possible to help you ..... yes it can take an hour for a new hairdryer to be sent up for you.... but you will always get it and they do have 107 other apartments to look after!.... My only gripe is one miserable guy on reception, but you are paying for a room not a romance!!
I love it and will ensure my company only uses this hotel in Manchester from now on!!

Stayed at this hotel for three weeks on business. Very nice appertments with everything you need supplied. The fully equipt kitchen was great and the bedrooms were fantastic. There were a couple of things however that really let it down. The fixtures and fittings (especially in the bathroom) were very poorly fitted. I stayed in two apartments whilst I was there and it was the same story in both. Also my wardrobe door didn't shut as it wasn't installed properly. The maid service was a bit hit and miss too. Some days I'd have no shampoo, others no shower gel and once our room wasn't even tidied. Replacing things like shampoo seems a bit odd to miss.
Other than that a great place to stay with a great location, would definately stay again.

My husband and I recently stayed at the place. It is a very cool hotel, the apartments are modern , big and clean. I thought it was very minimalistic there are no paintings on the walls which would look nice. It is situated in the city center very near the shops, train station ect. I loved it I would recomennd it to anyone and my only objection is the lack of warmth in the apartments.

The Place Apartment Hotel is ideally situated for exploring various aspects of the city of Manchester and has secure on-site parking facilities for an extra charge per night. I liked the apartment which was quite stylish and had a tv, dvd, stereo, washing machine and iron as well as a kitchen area. I was however a little dismayed at the cleanliness of the apartment. Some of the walls and skirting boards looked a little grubby, like they needed a lick of fresh paint and the upholstery on the sofas in the living area was also in need of a wash, if not replacing altogether. The bedroom was clean and the bed comfortable. A few of the fixtures and light fittings also failed to work. Having said that, the staff were polite and friendly and due to the location of The Place, I would consider returning there for a future stay.

Excellent accommodations and central Manchester location

I travel frequently for business and have stayed in innumerous hotels over the years. If you are looking for a hotel which is centrally located with more character then a typical hotel then this is for you. My company sends many people to Manchester for business and almost everyone chooses The Place. The place is not for everyone. It is an apartment style hotel with full room service. There is no on site restaurant or bar but you are in the middle of Manchester city center 2 blocks from Piccadilly train station and close to all the entertainment and culture Manchester has to offer. There are many many places to dine within easy walking distance including china town and a nice restaurant in a hotel across the street where your can get a traditional full English breakfast. There is no room service but the rooms have about a dozen local places that deliver for free! The bedrooms are large and sparse but comfortable. You get a wardrobe and a desk. There is plenty of hot water in the clean bathrooms. The two bedroom unit that I stayed in had 2 bathrooms with showers, one off the main bedroom and one in the hallway. Each unit has an iron/board and clothes washing machine. A full kitchenette complete with dishwasher and coffee maker, refrigerator/freezer, microwave, pots, pans, dishes, silverware, cups, glasses with a dining room and table. The separate living room has Satellite TV and radio/CD player. It has that cozy feel, more like your friends place then an impersonal hotel. The Place has a very modern design which may not appeal to those who like the big floral covered sofas or colorful walls. The staff was generally friendly with one exception. A male night manager was quite rude and unaccommodating but I think he has issues and I won't blame the hotel. Overall I would definitely stay here again. Convenient, reasonable price, clean and friendly. One thing I should mention is that there was construction across the street when I was there (June 04) which did obscure the otherwise excellent views of the city.

My stay at The Place was fantastic, very spacious and equipped with everything for a weekend break. The staff were friendly and helpful so we felt very welcome.
I also got a great deal by using my Urban Tag Membership. We also went out in the city centre since Urban Tag also offers discounts and value added offers in places like Taurus, Hard Rock and Tiger Tiger so we saved some money and got preferential treatment!!

Great home-away-from-home

I stayed in The Place for three weeks in February 2003 during a business trip. It was great for an extended stay -- decent kitchen with utensils, stovetop, oven, microwave, washer/dryer, space for lounging. It's a perfect location for working in Central Manchester -- a quick walk to the main shopping and business districts, and right next to the main railway station for sightseeing trips. For such a long stay, I really loved the feeling of being in an apartment rather than a hotel room. The staff was picked up a newspaper for me every morning. I could get groceries from a big supermarket a few blocks away, or from a small market in the train station. It's also in a cool old building -- an old warehouse with high arched brick ceilings in every room.

Minor problems: our two bedroom apartment had one room facing out, one facing in. The room facing into the inner atrium got stuffy with the window closed, and noisy with the window open. Weekends seemed to fill the place with folks coming to the Big City to party, and the place got a bit noisier at night. My American expectations of a huge tumble dryer were dashed by the European-style all-in-one. (European appliances? In Europe? Whoa!)

The only truly bad part of our stay was that some of our questions and requests just got dropped, no matter how many times we asked; because we were staying there for weeks, this was *really* annoying. Our room didn't have a SkyTV cable box for the TV, and it took the staff two weeks to find one (during which time we had to survive on five tv channels -- five!. That's pretty much cruel and unusual punishment for us Americans.) A couple pots and cooking utensils were missing that we really could have used; we asked many times, but never got them. A request for some hangars for our closet similarly got lost. Maybe they didn't have any, maybe our requests never got to the right person. Either way, the silence was frustrating.

I also learned that it snows in Manchester, but that's not the hotel's fault.

If I was staying in Manchester for a vacation, I'd be tempted to stay at the Place again -- great location, comfortable, spacious. For shorter stays, I might want more of a traditional hotel, but I'd definitely be considering The Place.

A Sheer Gem

The Place - outside nothing of note, but do not be fooled - inside this was absolutely wonderful. My two colleagues had a deluxe 2 bedroom apartment and I had a standard 2 bedroom apartment. Both were excellent - every facility you could want and imagine - a real home from home.

Whilst we only stayed 2 night, a longer stay would have been delightful. Next time I'll bring my wife and daughter.

Friendly and helpful reception staff and good maid service.

Cost - excellent value for money and much better than some of the hotel rooms with much less facilities close by.

Ideal location, walkable from the station and walkable to the Arndale centre. We had a 2 bedroom apartment - one bedroom overlooked the carpark and the announcements from the train station were audible through the night. The other bedroom looked onto the central atrium and stairs, and noise from other guests entering/leaving the building was a bit of a problem. If you want a night's sleep, request an apartment near the top of the building!
That aside, the apartment was first-class with some nice touches eg dvd, satellite tv, cd player, well equipped kitchen. The staff were very helpful during our stay.

Top Local Tips for Manchester

Wine If you must have a bottle of wine with meal (and boy is it expensive!!) - the best we found on the wine list was no.5 (sorry cant remember the name of it) and the Rioja was good too - make sure they serve them at right temperature though as fridge was playing up and sometimes they store the wine downstairs which is far too cold for red wine!!!

A few good places to eat Italian: San Carlo, King St West (££) Tapas: El Rincon de Rafa, Longworth Street. (£) French: The French Restaurant, (in the Midland Hotel - £££) English/European, The River Room in the Lowry Hotel (££) Brunch: The Grill on the Alley, Ridgefield (££).
