The bar in the evening was fantastic, so Ill give it a couple of points for that.
Our written complaint about the noise and breakfast was met by a written reponse some weeks later to inform me that the room was not noisy, the breakfast was fine and competative in the region etc, would never stay there again, frankly there are better & cheaper Hotels in Manchester with star ratings, Id go so far as saying there are better B&B's.

Rude and incompetent staff
from KD76We turned up at about 2.30 a.m after our wedding reception and were told by my sister who arrived just ahead of us that our room was not ready yet. I thought that was strange but had a drink in the bar. It wasn't until a week later that she told me the truth - apparently the staff had given our room to another couple who walked in off the street! (they knew we would be arriving this late). They thought this couple were us and didn't actually bother to check. Also they printed out the visa slip as they had our card on record and the man signed it. The staff did not even notice that the name he signed was completely different to the name it was booked under. So we were left without a room but had actually paid for it. My sister didn't want us to know as we'd had lots go wrong that day so she really gave them hell and demanded that we have our room. Apparently they tried to get this other couple out but they refused to answer the door and would not leave! So we had to be given another room that was not as nice but we accepted it at the time because my sister actualy told us our original room was flooded (she's good at keeping me calm!). Anyway she also suggested they give us a bottle of champagne as an apology - which they did, but the next day they charged us for it! When she found out she went mad and rang them up - the woman she spoke to was very rude but after a long argument she agreed to refund the champagne. My sister also suggested they write and apologise - they refused. So all - in - all - nice building - crap staff.
Whoops forgot to mention that the bar staff were great - kept us and some of our hardcore guests going til 7a.m while all this was going on.
Rude staff, over-hyped
from A TripAdvisor MemberI went to check in at 3:30 pm and was told that my room wasn't ready. I was advised to wait in the bar and ofered no apology - merely excuses such as "lots of guests asked for a late check-out today and we are very busy." I finally got to check-in to my room. I realised on arrival that I needed the little toothpaste pack and shaving kit that hotels always have so called reception who told me that it would cost £1 and that I had to come and get it myself! Even a 2 star Holiday Inn would bring these items to your room for free.
The staff were rude throughout my stay. They charged the wrong rate at check-out (Luckily I'd kept my email print out with the correct rate as they didn't believe me) and once again offered no apology.
There was no cold water in the room - I was told by the staff that this was because the cold and hot pipes were placed too close together when the hotel was built. Other than that the room was so-so - terrible view of derilict old warehouse, but this is Manchester we're talking about so what can one expect?
Never again - I will avoid this chain completely. I have never stayed in a hotel outside of Paris where all of the staff are uniformly rude.
Early alarm call!
from croggaLovely Hotel
from A TripAdvisor MemberAll in all, I would definately stay there again. Not bad for GBP 79!
Better than Britannia Hotel by a long shot.
Great - apart from the Bar
from A TripAdvisor MemberIt is a bid like what they call Malmaison
from A TripAdvisor MemberStylish, well-located, refreshing
from JCWI've stayed in larger rooms, and service slipped a notch at one point on one of my stays, but a call to the management led to a professional apology and bottle of wine.
But it really is a good hotel, and the location (opposite Piccadilly Station) is very central.
Great Top Quality Hotel
from A TripAdvisor MemberAvoid this dump at all costs
from A TripAdvisor MemberSo they made up the bed...trying to make it appear as if there was fresh bed linen.....but the reality is that they are a bunch of greedy crooks who, to save a few pence in laundry costs, will subject you to appallingly unhygenic conditions.
NO apology from the staff when I pointed this out. No reduction in the VERY steep room rate. A tall, hatchet-faced Australian blond behind the desk couldn't be bothered to even acknowledge that this was anything out of the ordinary.
I'd sleep in the street before I'd stay in this snake pit again.

from A TripAdvisor MemberTop Local Tips for Manchester
Manchester I was born just outside Manchester, but as we moved south when I was still quite young, I can be objective about a visit there. My mother still waxes lyrical about how friendly and down to earth Mancunians are. Hmm, maybe in 1959. If you want a week-end in an urban setting, try Stoke On Trent. I kid you not! It has all the ingredients for a great week-end (narrow boats, potteries, shopping, moorland walks, great restaurants and theatres etc) but the important difference is that the people are really really friendly and are genuinely proud of their city.
Watch your handbag I do lots of fieldwork in Manchester and all the locals I meet seem to have had a handbag (purse) and/or mobile phone stolen - so be careful in clubs, bars and restaurants
If you can't get breakfast for FREE Go to the weatherspoons on the corner of Portland & Oxford Street for a filling £2.10 breakfast! Very good value. Also across the road from their is a chinese buffet place....great food less than a tenner...eat as much as you like!
