Historical Traveller Reviews of Lowry Hotel

Luxury at the Lowry

from jacqueline_m
Visited the Lowry in May this year. Expensive but first class. The room was enormous, fabulous huge king size bed, soft luxury bedding. The whole room was immaculate and stylish. Modernist designer furniture etc. Wonderful ensuite bathroom although the bath products could have been a bit more luxurious (although it was possible to order extra "spa" bath products and treatments for an extra fee). Great view over bridge and Irwell. The bar/ restaurant was great too super light lunch. Ordered room service for dinner and breakfast food great and service good. The room was cleaned/ checked twice in one day.

I even spotted a famous face (Manchester legend Morrissey) when checking out.

If you can afford it the Lowry is THE place to stay in Manchester.

Not Wowed

Was extremely excited about staying at Lowry after impressive feedback from friends. However, was not Wowed by the staff at all. Service was slow, complacent and at times bordering on rude.

The lovely Lowry

Poor Madonna had to fly home in a helicopter on the 15th August to stay with her family for her birthday. She had made a reservation at The Lowry but at the last minute decided to fly home. She missed out. The Lowry could not be better situated, cross the bridge and you’re outside of Kendal’s department store. There’s also a Harvey Nichols and Selfridges’s in the city. Vivienne Westwood, Armani, Hugo Boss and DKNY are all close by and it’s a stones throw from the MEN Arena. It cost us only £4.00 for a taxi from Piccadilly Station to the hotel.

The hotel bathrooms are large and well provided for and the rooms are also big and modern. The only down side is all the rooms are the same giving the hotel the atmosphere of a posh hospital. The bar staff are at best miserable and the concierge tended to be more interested in what luggage you bring in and how much it cost. When I told the gentlemen he informed me I could get Prada luggage cheaper on Ebay. I was flabbergasted; the doorman however is a gem and room service like clockwork.

The hotel is very cheap costing us just £250 for River suite, in Claridge’s this would not open the door to the cheapest room category. A martini is just £7.50 and breakfast no more than £20. All in all the Rocco Forte Lowry rocks!

Hotel of choice for Manchester!

from matt_robertson
Until now, the Malmaison had been our hotel of choice in Manchester, not any more, the Lowry is far superior.

The physical location isn't pretty, it's actually in Salford, but it's only a 2 minute walk over the bridge into the heart of Manchester, but the hotel more than makes up for it.

From the moment we got there, the service was excellent. Valet parking went smoothly, as did check in, all the staff were very helpful and polite.

The rooms were large and furnished to a high standard, the bathrooms were large with two showers.

We did receive a turndown, although that never fails to amuse us - we are more that capable of pulling back some bedding!

t be the best hotel in Manchester?

I felt a little dissapointed with our stay, as I had been looking forward to staying at the Lowry having heard so much about it. I didn't exactly hate it...but probably wouldn't spend that sort of money to stay there again. It is in a VERY good position...though in a slightly rough area, it's only 2 minutes walk across the bridge into the centre of town. Rooms very comfortable with walk in closet but mini bar had no spirits in it, just beer and sodas, which I though was strange.
We checked in on a Saturday evening and the staff were so busy with a wedding function that we seemed to take second place. This may be that we caught them on an off night though. The staff were friendly though not what I would expect in a five star hotel. The door staff didn't seem very organised and seemed to have problems juggling the cars in the car park...not overly impressive as car parking costs £12 per day! The night door staff were even worse, being far too offhand for a hotel of this stature. Overall...the hotel is just about OK with a 5 star building and 3 star service.

Lacking customer service

The hotel itself looks and feels good, although i felt let down by the staff at this hotel. Having stayed in many 5 star hotels across the world, i know what to expect from a top class hotel and the Lowry staff DO NOT match that of other hotels of this hotels rating. The staff do not have the training to know how to treat a guest and waiting times to have the car parked or to checkin are very below par.

This hotel could be so special in that it feels good and the rooms are of the highest luxury, if only they could get the staff to treat the guests as the people that matter, they might get another visit from my family.

Very Poor Dining!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We had a family meal at the hotel and were very disappointed. The adults food was no more than distinctly average and the childrens' food was a disgrace...I expect the chef thought kids don't count....their steak was tough and inedible. Service was painfully slow. Overall it was not worth the money and quite a disappointment.
Seems quite a pretentious place, without having reason to be....full of oiks!

You'll find no better hotel in Manchester. We stayed during the recent Christmas & New Years holidays. The New Years Gala was incredible.

That said, what I want to emphasize most about this hotel is the fact that the Lowry Hotel, as well as its bars and restaurants, is operated by an outstanding of a staff of hoteling professionals. Rarely have I ever seen better in any hotel anywhere in the world. The management have done an outstanding job of hiring, training, and retaining quality staff. It shows in all aspects of service and the upkeep of the facilities. We will return soon.

VERY VERY Convenient Location

from retep68
Just a correction to the "Inconvenient Location" review. The Lowry is extremely convenient to Manchester City centre, which is where most restaurants / bars / clubs / theatres and shops are located (Kendals (Manchester's biggest department store) is about a five minute walk away, The Opera House (one of Manchester's main theatres) is about the same). I can only think the reviewer is getting confused with The Lowry at Salford Quays (which isn't a hotel but a gallery and theatre(s) and is about a ten minute tram ride away).

Words cannot do this superb Hotel enough justice !

Save, scrimp and steal for a night at this fabulous Hotel! Just had the time of my life at the Lowry.... went North last weekend for the first time and didnt want to go home again. The rooms are massive - and we had a standard bedroom! God only knows what the Suites are like, the stuff that dreams are made of most probably. Shame that it was'nt warmer - and I'm not richer, they have their own jetty.... in the middle of Manchester.... fancy arriving at that hotel one day aboard a yacht, vodca martini in one hand, Dior suitcase in the other, will most probably be too old to enjoy it by then and would have to remortgage something much bigger than my house. We had breakfast in bed on the Saturday and spent the rest of the day shopping, the Hotel's bridge brings you across to the city centre and ,sadly, back to reality (the Armani and Vivienne Westwoods stores are great for window shopping at least!) We had planned to go into the City Centre in the evening though got lost in the Hotel Bar. Can't decide what made us stay in the hotel all evening, must have been the heady mix of the beautiful waiter serving the gorgeous cocktails and the quite famous faces sitting at the table opposite us!!! Have just nominated myself as Hen Party Weekend organiser for my best friend since Primary School, mmmmhhhh I wonder where I will book for us.....

Top Local Tips for Manchester

roving packs of youths Take care if you are walking in the centre of Manchester. Weekend evenings are worse, but at any time you can come across packs of drunken and/or agressive "yobbos" wandering the streets, shouting and looking for trouble. Keep well clear, do not interfere or make eye contact.

save money Keep your eye out for deals. you can get rooms for 125 reduced from 280

Great city You can't go wrong. have been going since mid 80s and never disappoints
