i read the reveiws after i had booked the room and was worried about going to the hotel as the reveiws were so bad. i was really pleasantly surprised by what i saw when i got there. we stayed in room 21 and it was large with triple aspect windows with a lovely veiw, we had a four poster bed and a large clean bathroom. the staff were very friendly and helpfull. the breakfast was very good. all in all the hotel and stay was very good. im not sure what people expect for £30 pppn b&b but i couldn't have faulted the place. i would definatley stay there again.

Already knowing we were not staying at a 5 star hotel, nothing could have prepared us for the awful, shabby room we were provided with as the brochure looked very appealing. The decor was extremly dated and someone had been ripping the paper off the wall in some places. The bed was as hard as concrete and felt like sleeping on the pavement. The bathroom was extremly dated and to get the hot water from the sink I had to run the water in the bath as recommended by the reception. There was no shower at all. The food was appalling...really!! There was a very limited menu and what was on there was almost inedible.e.g. the melon was like eating a turnip it was so hard. Forget the main course I don't have enough room to write about it and even a simple desert like the rice pudding was a disaster, it was a plate of grey slop. I heard some comments from the next table and they couldn't work out what they were eating either!. Cooked breakfast was very basic, nothing extraordinary. the side plate was covered with yellow egg (not mine!)There didn't seem to be a manager there the whole time we were there and the staff didn't seem to care about the guests well being. There was no customer care at all. It is my personal opinion that the hotel should be shut , totaly refurbished and reopened with a whole new team of staff (chef included...if there was one!) .

Clean rooms, staff very welcoming and food excellent. Will return next time in Yorkshire.

Just come home from a great stay in the Talbot Hotel. Was a bit worried after reading some of the reviews beforehand, but the Hotel is great value for money. The decor may be a bit dated, but it is very clean, crisp white sheets, fresh towels daily, and the breakfasts are super. The staff I encountered were all very polite. I dont know what people are moaning about!!!

The Hotel could do with a bit of TLC, but as a B&B venue for visits to York & surrounding area, it was very good. The building has charm, the staff were pleasant, food (breakfast only) was good - all in a handy location. Malton is a nice town. Would recommend a visit to the Mexican or Tapas bar for excellent food & Suddaby's for real ale.

Disappointed with inside of hotel. Terrible smell of damp in parts. Although the room was nice and big, decoration was poor. Paint peeling off stains on carpets. The receptionist couldn't have been less friendly. Location for us was fine and the outside looked nice. Definitely will not be staying here again.

Terrible stay! Unhelpful staff, arrogant manager and very DIRTY rooms!! Complete waste of good money. AVOID at all costs!!

We had checked in to the green man, after being shown two very poor rooms we were transferted to the "sister hotel" Talbot. As it was now nine pm we were very tired and accepted room 10 but it was very poor, the shower door on the bath was held together with "gaffer" tape and the room was not very nice. We would have accepted our money back but having paid up front (company policy) we were told that getting our money back would involve writing in to central reservations and chances are you never see your money again so at least we got one crap night for our £50 b and b. The English rose is crap, dont stay there under any circumstances, please see green man review!!!!!!!!

Super hotel, great value family accommodation, lovely food, clean, roomy, friendly/ helpful staff and a great location to visit Flamingoland. In this day and age good things are hard to find! Will definitely visit again.
