This is a super hotel for anyone who is sick of those dull chains. Real character place, great food and the room we had was truly stunning. It's a bit shabby in places but nothing to worry about. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and I know we will stay there again.

Shambolic management

Stayed here two nights, on the second night they locked us out of the hotel, nobody bothered to tell us they lock up after 11pm and that you need a front door key. Locked out for an hour. no apology, an offer of £10 rebate, laughable. Refused to pay, now received a threatening letter if we dont pay up we will be taken to court.
Dont go there.

Oh dear, is this the standard we expect

The hotel look OK from the outside, but expect all that is bad about English hotels from there on in, small badly furnished and dirty rooms. They locked us out of the hotel at night (we had to wake the cook to let us in after 45 mins crawling through bushes to try and rouse their attention) They were not the slights bit apologetic (They are currently taking us to court because we refused to pay for such terrible service) As for the food, try the eggs benedict, who would have thought it was made with bacon rashers, on a shop bought crumpet. Truly awful. Don't go and do not believe it's rating, the AA etc should be ashamed.

A very comfortable, clean Hotel (if a little shabby - is this what they call shabby chic?)

The bedroom was large and comfortable with a fabulous view over the garden to the sea. The service from all the staff was excellent and the food was to die for! The only complaint I would have is that on occasions some of the food was just a little too richly flavoured for my taste, viz the sherry trifle. Good wine cellar.

Overall though a wonderful hotel. I will certainly be going back and will recommend it to friends and family - although not too many or we might not be able to get a room again!

Top Local Tips for Lyme Regis

watch out for the prices in the Thai at the Bay Hotel Foods good, but the menu and the cash register prices don't join up.

EXCELLENT Local Bookshop Take the time to wander round the shops, in particular the local bookshop, family run and quite often open later on in the evenings - so it's bliss to browse in peace after dinner, if the local pubs do not appeal. Charming lady proprietoress, who knows her books and in particular John Fowles. Recommend asking for signed copies of his novels - (stashed safely in the back!) and also suggest you buy a copy of The Lyme Regis Walkabout - written by the lady from who you will buy it. An absolute must for anyone who is new to the town and would enjoy reading a potted history - as the town is steeped in it.

Best pub lunches Try the Volunteer on the high street (also local haunt in evenings) and the Royal Standard near the Cobb. Latter has welcoming fire in winter and large reasonably priced menu. Crowded in high season, especially on sunny outdoor partio, literally steps from the sand.
