Historical Traveller Reviews of Menzies Strathmore Bedfordshire Hotel
Great Luton hotelfrom marmin
Nice decor, very clean and comfortable room and friendly staff. Had dinner and breakfast and both were excellent. The bar and restaurant area is also a pleasant place to spend time in so no need to leave the hotel. Didn't use spa or pool so can't comment on these but did travel with others who said both were good. Really can't understand the negative comments on some reviews (unless they were prior to the refurb? in which case I cannot comment)
Only downside - the surrounding area isn't great - unless of course you like shopping in which case it's very well located. For a short stay or airport hotel I would definitely recommend it.
I was pleasantly surprised when I got there, the reception was clean and pleasant and the staff were friendly and helpful.
The room was comfortable and functional, if a little small. The bathroom fittings were nice, even if the bathroom itself was very small and required a bit of maneuvering to get in and out past the door. As someone else mentioned the shower filled the bath faster than the bath could drain and so I was wading around toward the end.
Breakfast was a bit of a shambles. While the fare that was advertised available was diverse, it was not replenished particularly often and so we were left with a poor selection, especially on the second morning when we had left coming down for breakfast until pretty late. (Morning after a wedding reception... I'm sure you understand. ;->) Also the staff seemed more intent on milling around looking mithered than they were in clearing the tables.
Also the pool and sauna were a pleasant bonus that you don't normally get in a hotel of this price range.
All in all, it was not a bad stay. Not the Ritz by any stretch of the imagination, but certainly not Fawlty Towers either. I have stayed in a lot worse.
One night was enough!from IANTOJONES
To be fair to the hotel it is now 1000 times better than it was when it was a Thistle Hotel but it still needs to improve.
Reception does look nicely refurbished but unfortunately the quality of the staff does not match! I queued for over 20 minutes to check in, only to be told that my booking did not exist. Actually it transpired that my booking did exist but the reservations staff had not "got around" to putting it into the system. They then made me wait another 15 minutes whilst they did this.
I was told that I had a refurbished room. This was true and the room was very contemporary and it was nice (if a bit small). They had not finished the refurb though as there was no flat screen TV, just wires and a hole on the wall where it was supposed to be!
The bathroom was very small and required skilfull manouvering and the shower was one of those annoying ones where the bath filled up quicker than it drained and by the end of the shower I was standing in a foot of water!
There were problems with the keycard as it would not work meaning an extra 3 or 4 trips to reception to sort it out. They told me there was an ongoing problem.
Breakfast was shambolic. On arrival all of the tables were dirty so I had to get one cleaned. Then pretty much all of the food was needing to be replenished (It was only 8.30am). I asked the staff if they would get new hot food whilst I ate an awful fruit salad. 30 minutes later they had still not put out new hot breakfast! So I just left.
Luton is a horrible place and I really felt unsafe walking into the town at night. If I have to stay here again I will book the Days Inn or the Holiday Inn Express at the airport.
Not bad, pity about the town it is infrom Oranman
The reception is pretty nicely done up and the receptionist was very pleasant and efficient.
That was inside the hotel, but outside the hotel is a different story - perhaps I am doing the place a gross insult, but as far as I can see, Luton has nothing to recommend it. The entrance to the hotel is also the entrance to a pretty crumby multi story carpark, and the whole area feels pretty dodgy.
Overall, if you have to stay in Luton, I would not put you off the hotel, it is fine inside, but don't expect an architectural gem
Luton is a nice enough spot, good pub grub near shopping centre. According to local guys there’s a hotel across the road cheaper and nicer... can't remember name, sorry!
Staff - ok.
Dont be impressed by the Reception!from JustKeepMoving

Wow, what a difference the facelift has madefrom shaunvl
Lobby and bar very modern and had a great atmosphere.
Restaurant fully re-fitted and looks great. Good dinner menu with views over the town centre. Didn't have time for breakfast as early flight, but I'm sure it would have been good too.
Stayed in a newly refurbished bedroom. Very modern facilities and loved the bathroom - so clean.
Not to my tastefrom thechiefy
Not bad stayfrom catninja
I would have given an above average review, but found the check in staff a bit slow, otherwise not a bad experience.
