Love this place!

from A TripAdvisor MemberVery Solid
from StevePenSome details. First location. The hotel is located behind Victoria train station. That's great if you are coming from Gatwick since the Gatwick trains arrive there. But plan on catching a cab to the hotel if you haver bags. The walk to the hotel is ten minutes without bags, fifteen with. Also, the area is marginal for safety. If you are traveling alone, with bags, etc. be smart and take a cab. The closest tube (subway) stop is at Victoria. So plan a cab when you are coming back from shopping and the like. It's 3-4 pounds one way.
The hotel is a boutique hotel. There's only one or two rooms per floor. Make sure you don't get one of the basement rooms; I would think they would be dark. The rooms are about three-quarters the size of a standard US room but comfortable. Non-smoking rooms really smell clean (this can be a problem with the older, smaller hotels in Europe). The bathrooms are for one preson at a time, but are clean and adequately equipped/stocked. Beds were comfortable. Pillows were feather. I didn't see individual heating controls, but I didn't look hard either.
The hotel offers a complimentary breakfast with the room rental. There are croissants, toast, juice, coffee, etc. There's also a no-charge option for scrambled eggs, eggs benedict, and a bacon and eggs b'fast. It's good and hot. Even on Sunday morning when they were very busy the service was good and the meals hot.
The staff is very freindly and service was excellent. It may seem like a lot to pay for a smaller hotel in London, but as things stand these days, it's a bargain.
Excellent hotel
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe room was very nice. The bathroom was a bit cramped, but no worse than most in London.
The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Full English breakfast is included and it was excellent.
Very friendly staff for the hotel and the breakfast room.
This hotel has been a friend's favourite for years. Talking with some of the other guests, many are repeat visitors for many years. We'll be staying here on our next London trip.
Windermere Great!
from Wanderlust 11The Windermere was great!
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe food was really good in the basement restaurant. (In this neighborhood, all of the basements have outside entrances and windows, so don't be put off.) We had dinner there one night, and breakfast every day (part of the rate.) Superb.
The owners and staff (young people from all over - we noted an Australian, a Parisienne, and a Russian) were very helpful and knowledgeable. Victoria Station is a 5-10 minute walk, and there are at least 3 pubs nearby. The hotel itself, at 150 years old, has some quirks as one would expect (no lift) but it is noticeably well-kept. We would stay again.
Windermere - a Quaint London Experience

from A TripAdvisor MemberTop Local Tips for London
Cheap way to get to the Windermere from Heathrow Take the National Express Bus from Heathrow to Victoria Coach Station. It was very inexpensive and the buses were clean and comfortable. It takes about 1 hour to get you there. We bought our tickets ahead of time on-line. I think it was 12 pounds for 3 adults. Faster and more comfortable than the underground and you don't have to switch lines, etc.,
Buy a Pay as You Go Oyster Card We bought an Oyster Card at Paddington Tube Station and it was very convenient to use: simply tap it on the Oyster reader on buses and at tube station turnstiles and the appropriate amount is subtracted. Children ride transit for free when accompanied by an adult with an Oyster Card and the Oyster Card provides great discounts (it also automatically maxes out at the day pass rate). We never had to worry about buying tickets, finding change etc. We still have a balance on our Oyster Card (which requires a GBP3 refundable deposit) but the balance never disappears so we are saving our Oyster Card for our next trip to London. We can top up the balance at any tube station. Public transit in Central London is really really convenient and fast and having the Oyster Card made getting about even more convenient.
Underground avoid the Underground at rush hour and its jammed packed on weekends
