Last night I went to the Goring to celebrate my birthday. Although we did not stay here as we live in London, we had heard that the restaurant was very good. The champagne we ordered took at least 15 mins to arrive and there were only 4 other tables in the restaurant! The menu was not inspiring at all. My mother and I had dressed crab, it was ok, nothing mind blowing, the dark meat had been quenelled and was hard, straight from the fridge. My boyfriend’s pear and Roquefort salad was as it said, again nothing mind blowing. Stepfather had venison carpaccio, he choose the best, but again not much to write home about. Main course, my mother ordered braised Devon lamb, it looked like school food, diced carrots, the meat protruding from the sauce was dry, the sauce had been slopped over the dish and caused a tide mark around the bowl, not a dumpling or garnish in sight!! My boyfriend and I had beef Wellington, it was cooked well, but the mushroom duxell was a grey slime around the pastry. Father had Dover sole with a £15 supplement, it had better been good. All were served with a small copper pan of kale, nothing else!! By dessert, I had had enough, nothing for me! The cheese trolley was fine, but then you can’t go wrong with that!! The maitre d' could see we were not happy and enquired about our complaints. He took them gracefully, and admitted the head chef was off (as if you couldn't tell) however he took no action to make our very unforgettable meal a little more pleasant. Even when leaving he merely handed us our coats and never mentioned our complaints again. The hotel looks very nice and Lord Linley has a made a wonderful job of the dining room. However, for the price we paid, we could have gone to The Stockpot on Kings Road for a quarter of the price!!
